jedion357 September 1, 2011 - 2:03pm | Hey started a thread to discuss the organization of a Virtual Con Here: http://www.starfrontiers.us/node/5629 but since that project has limited membership I'm sending this notice to pull more of you in, even if you just offer ideas and dont want to participate in organizing it. If we can get some interest in it I think it would be a great activity for the 30th anniversary of Star Frontiers Please stop by the Conventions project and discuss. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Inigo Montoya December 17, 2011 - 10:11pm | I'm a looser without important conflicts. Though I still have to find where my wife has hidden my checkbook. My only concern is my new home I'll be moving into at the first of the year. I need to figure out how I am going to get internet service out there. |
TerlObar January 31, 2012 - 3:39pm | Just hit a roadblock with the con. The company I was going to use to make the patch just called me and said they can't make it without permission for WOTC because WOTC owns the game. So now I need to ask WOTC for permission to make the patch from the logo. Grrrr. If I don't get a yes back quickly, I'll have to refund the money for those that have already registered and take a loss on the processing fees since I won't be able to have the patch made. w00t (not verified) January 31, 2012 - 3:54pm | What about making a Star Frontiersman patch? We own that and give you premission. I know it's not the same as the cool patch you did, but I doubt you'll get an answer. Sad, I know. Think about it, I'll have Shell or one of my in-house artist whip something up that our community will own. And by "our community" I ment starfrontiers.* Take that you IP demon! ;-) |
w00t (not verified) January 31, 2012 - 3:58pm | OH...and we can have a Con without a patch. We don't need no stink'in patches! |
TerlObar January 31, 2012 - 4:16pm | We'll have the con regardless but if I can't make the patch I have to send back money to the people who already registered or at least ask them if they want the different patch since that was what the money was being collected for. By all means, have someone else whip up a patch design if you want. I don't have time to make a new patch though. Ad Astra Per Ardua! iggy February 1, 2012 - 11:45pm | Keep my registrations in. I'll go for the new patch, even if it is late coming. BTW, What is it that they have problems with, the name Star Frontiers, the assault scout graphic, or both? If it is the assault scout then we just switch to one of the new designs produced here. If it is the name then we use Star Frontiersman and SFAD and SFKH on the sides. -iggy |
Karxan February 1, 2012 - 11:47pm | I registered also. Keep me in. I'll take whatever is decided. |
TerlObar February 2, 2012 - 6:51am | It's the name Star Frontiers that she seemed to have an issue with and the fact that Star Frontiers is owned by WOTC. Ad Astra Per Ardua! My blog - Expanding Frontier Webmaster - The Star Frontiers Network & this site Founding Editor - The Frontier Explorer Magazine Managing Editor - The Star Frontiersman Magazine |
w00t (not verified) February 2, 2012 - 4:28pm | Can you go with a new patch company? Can we make them "in-house"? If you keep the same company I can work up a new patch, but I wonder if they will give you problems even if we use the Star Frontiersman name? It's a great idea and don't want to lose out giving ppl patches. Now that I think about it, it would be cool to have a patch for each issue of the Star Frontiersman. |
TerlObar February 2, 2012 - 6:42pm | I can try a different company but everywhere else is more expensive. I've looked a quite a few other companies. Just so you all know, regardless of the company, you have to order 50 or more patches to get the price under $5 a patch. So far, 8 patches have been paid for and there are two others who registered to pay by mail. So those plus myself make 11 patches claimed. Now I'm sure there will be a bunch of last minute registrants, but maybe not. So as it is right now, if I can pull this off, I'm already having to put out over $100 of my own money to make them. Which I don't mind doing. I'll use the extras somewhere, but I'd like to try to keep the extra cost down if I can. And I'll be honest, I'm not really excited about sinking a bunch of my own money into the project for a different patch. I'm understandably attached to this one since I did the design and any new patch would really have to grab me as much as this one does. If anyone can find a better deal for producing the patches, I'd love to hear about it. If we could make them "in-house" that would be fine. At one point we pursued that option and found that it wasn't viable. And I can't do it. As for using the Star Frontiersman name, we can show that DWD Studios owns that name so I don't think it would be an issue. I'm going to give WOTC until Monday to tell me yea or nay (and I'll ping them again tomorrow). After that I'll start looking at alternative companies for making them and alternative patch ideas if anyone comes up with one. Ad Astra Per Ardua! TerlObar February 13, 2012 - 3:46pm | I've got a week and a half left of an up to two week waiting period to hear back from WOTC on making the patches. As such I've removed the $5 registration fee and opened up the con for immediate registration. Depending on what I hear from WOTC we'll make the patches after the con or not at all. Those who already paid can either be refunded or can wait to hear what the verdict is on the patch. If we do manage to make the patch, all Con participants will be e-mailed with the option to purchace them. In any case we're down to less than four weeks until the con. So if you haven't signed up, jump over to the Con Website and do so. So far there are 8 people signed up and two games listed (one by jedion357 on Friday and one by me on Saturday). You can now register for games so get signed up for the con and register to play and/or referee a game. Now is the time to get the word out and tell everyone you know that plays Star Frontiers about it and get them signed up. Ad Astra Per Ardua! TerlObar February 13, 2012 - 4:13pm | I should also add that in the con schedule we blocked out a couple of hours for two, one hour general sessions. I think I've located a site where you can set up a free conference call and then have some of the people on as participants and all others can post questions into a chat window to be answered by the panel. However, we're still looking for topics. Some ideas I had included:

TerlObar March 12, 2012 - 1:01pm | Well, we survived the weekend. I think the Con was a success as far as it went. We had three great gaming sessions and everyone that played seemed to have fun. All the technology we tried out seemed to work and I think we have ideas to make it better. In fact, one of the players has already asked me if I'd run another game for them. I think the only disappointments for me were: 1) We had 34 people register for the con but only had game slots for 18 people and several people played in multiple games. I don't know if the others just didn't end up having time or what happened but I would have like to see more games available to try to get more people involved. 2) We couldn't produce the patch before the con. Possibly some of the people registered to get the opportunity to get a patch when they became available. This was really my own fault for not trying to get the patch going sooner. If I had started back in December like I had originally planned maybe we could have had it all sorted out by the time of the con. HOWEVER, about two hours ago I received an e-mail from WOTC with a contract granting me permission to do a one-time patch run for non-commercial use. That means we are go for the patch. I'll be sending out an e-mail with details for those of you that registered for the con. I don't know how long it will take but we will get them. 3) I kind of feel bad for not getting anything into the general session slots but not really. This con was focused on gaming and jedi's game ended up running five hours and right over the general session slot so I'm glad there wan't anything planned there to cause a conflict. I hear it was a great game. I think the only real question now is when should we do the next one? October? Ad Astra Per Ardua! Inigo Montoya March 12, 2012 - 2:16pm | I'd be interested in knowing how many people registered for the Con with the intention of playing but didn't get to play (and the reason that they didn't). I know that two of my kids wanted to play but because I didn't have internet access at my house, I had to take my laptop in search of service. Thus, they had to sit it out. Its for the best though. Put a mic in front of them and the GM would never get a word in edge wise. Great news on the patch. Looking forward to getting one (or four). |
w00t (not verified) March 12, 2012 - 3:45pm | The Con was a success, great job Terl and all the work you put into the Con site. :-) jedion and Terl brought a different GM style, both were fun. Too bad the Red Devil got away. :-( October is bad for me, Con on the Cobb and HeroScape tournament. December ppl are generally home? |
AZ_GAMER March 12, 2012 - 6:34pm | For some reason I couldn't log in to chat |
iggy March 12, 2012 - 7:33pm | TerlObar is my hero! I am all excited now that the patch is go. We should contact everyone that registered for the con with some sort of survey of five questions of less and the patch as a thank you. Then we could start narrowing the time down to the most popular dates. However I fear that December will flop for a con. I have planned countless scouting events over the years and December is a family month 100%. No one ever commits to anything that is not family or holiday related. I have found that Thanksgiving to New Years is too booked to get any kind of group together. That said I would vote for no later than the first two week ends in November. How about November 9th? -iggy |
iggy March 12, 2012 - 7:35pm | Additional thought. The next con needs a Knight Hawks space battle only game. -iggy |
TerlObar March 12, 2012 - 7:48pm | I thought about a KH boardgame session but it wasn't until Friday afternoon and by then I was completely stressed out about the two games I had two run. But I agree, a couple of KH boardgames would be great and will definitely go on the schedule next time. They don't even really need a referee, just X number of players. Ad Astra Per Ardua! w00t (not verified) March 12, 2012 - 8:39pm | Brian Conway and I ran Knight Hawks over the phone. Both of us had our game boards set out, when I moved I would declare my path, he the same. It worked really well. The problem was keeping track of the board between sessions. I suggest you play out the entire scenario the same day. Brian's battleship was toast... |
TerlObar March 12, 2012 - 9:35pm | I remember some of those games. I agree, it's best to play them out over a single session. However, OpenRPG (and proabably MapTool) can help with that. In OpenRPG you load up the map as the background and then put all the ships on the board. You move them around and can mark their heading in each turn and can draw out the paths they take. At the end of a round, you clear the paths (a single "clear all lines" command in OpenRPG) and repeat. If you can't finish in a single session, it is possible to simply save the map with the background, any miniatures on the board and any lines or other things that have been added. It records all the information about the setup. You can then just reload the map when you are ready to resume. In fact, thinking about this I'm tempted to set up another Second Sathar War game scenario and do it live with OpenRPG instead of as a PBP game like the last one. Now to just find the time to squeeze it in. Ad Astra Per Ardua! w00t (not verified) March 13, 2012 - 7:23am | Ahh, that makes sense. I wrote a KH board game scenario with some tweaks if anyone is interested in helping test before I submit to SFman. You must maneuver your ship close enough to scan each freighter to ascertain if it has the stolen goods. There is a substantial reward for the crew that captures the freighter with the stolen cargo. If you need to ask how much this isn’t the scenario for you! Station Echo Five does not know which freighter made off with the cargo nor will they reveal the contents. The only information the players are given is the scan frequency to detect the precious cargo. |
TerlObar March 27, 2012 - 10:03am | For your viewing pleasure. Here is a picture of the final patch design. I just authorized the production and they should be shipping out in 7-10 days and I should get them a few days after that. Once they're in hand, I'll start shipping them out to those who ordered them. They would have been done sooner but there was a mixup (error between keyboard and seat at the patch company) and they originally made the area behind the AS white instead of black. It's all fixed now and they are being produced. Ad Astra Per Ardua! Rollo March 27, 2012 - 11:29am | Those look really nice Terl! Thanks for putting forth the effort to get them all put together! I don't have to outrun that nasty beast my friend...I just have to outrun you! |
w00t (not verified) March 27, 2012 - 12:11pm | Terl, The patch looks amazing! Great job! I can see jedion drooling now. I might just buy another Volturnus hat and add this patch. :-) Some day I'll have my Truane's Star Express flight jacket ready for patches! |
Karxan March 27, 2012 - 5:30pm | Now I have to clean my keyboard from all of my drool. That is an awesome patch. I am going to have to figure out where to sew mine onto. |
w00t (not verified) March 27, 2012 - 6:53pm | I got a spot..... he. he. he. Now I have to clean my keyboard from all of my drool. That is an awesome patch. I am going to have to figure out where to sew mine onto. |
iggy March 27, 2012 - 7:00pm | Woooooooo Hoooooooo! I can see a new jacket coming in my future. Time to start combing the stores for something futuristic but frontier-ish. TerlObar Rocks! -iggy |
