Hey started a thread to discuss the organization of a Virtual Con Here:
http://www.starfrontiers.us/node/5629

but since that project has limited membership I'm sending this notice to pull more of you in, even if you just offer ideas and dont want to participate in organizing it.

If we can get some interest in it I think it would be a great activity for the 30th anniversary of Star Frontiers

Please stop by the Conventions project and discuss.

The US Navy has those nifty ball caps embossed with their ships. Anybody want to mock one up for the Eleanor Moraes? Undecided

That's an idea, though the last time I had hats made the set up charge was $120 while the cost of 12 hats was $120. Reorders of the hats is just $10 each though.

I love hats. I wear my Volturnus hat every day.

Although if the set up charge was spread over 25 hats the total per hat would be 14.80 plus shipping. And that's about what you'd expect for a hat. The shipping cost is just the cost of doing business.

I didn't mean to create a new project, but man they would look nice at gen con with our jumpsuits and patches. My daughters and I have decided that their next arts and crafts project will be making mock up laser rifles.

Question for the community:

If we start the virtual con on a Friday (March 9th), should we just start in the morning or wait until "after work"?  Any preferences?

What sort of software / venue is the con going to have?  The reason I'm asking is that monkeys took my jetpack is having a small virtual con on oct 22. All I know of that they are using is skype, and an IRC "Lobby" to coordinate.  Of course that one is free and ticketless.

Hasn't been decided.  I'm working on that right now.

Probably use some sort of chat room (probably the one here) as the main meeting area and then various sessions will use skype, OpenRPG, MapTools or others as needed for their format.  The only drawback to the chat room here is you can't (or at least I can't) seem to spawn off side rooms.  The chat on starfrontiers.info can but the interface is hideous since I've never cleaned it up.

There is software out there (can't remember the name right now) that allows you to have a voice converstation between a few parties, other listening only and a running chat window as well.  I'd like to look into that for some panel discussions.  Have the panel on voice and everyone listening in can post questions into chat for the panel to answer.

I can open up the Game Room on this site, it allows multiple rooms. Once nice feature is the Referee can run multiple NPC's via different windows. In order to play in the Game Room you must have an account on this site and the Referee must add you to his game.

I would keep the software as generic as possible. A simple chat room and a dice roller is probably all you need, unless maps are important to an adventure.

Can I pay extra when I register and get two patches?

That might take a little extra work.  It would be easy to do on the pay by mail form but I'd have to think about how to do it for the pay by credit card button.  I'd probably have to make a separate button.

However, if that is something people think we should offer I could do it.  Also I was seriously considering offering a second patch to anyone who actually refereed a game session.

You know what, don't worry about it I'm planning to GM a couple of sessions. I can wait till after the con and converse with you by email and simply buy an extra then if need be.

Yes, I suspect there will be plenty of extras I can make available afterward.

Question? as I was setting up my game for session 2 on Friday I saw a feature where you could check to allow spectators or not, but it seems to me that if the technology platform for the game is Skype then it doesn't seem anyone will be spectating.Unless they just hang out in Open RPG and lurk but they will miss the chatter.

I'm going to set up a team speak server.  This is basically an audio chat system where you can set up rooms and people can join.  I agree with Skype you can't have lurkers unless the referee calls everyone.  With this system you can.  Plus the ref doesn't have to collect skype usernames for all the players in order to set up the game.  People just call in and join the game room.

Some bad news.  At work they just decided on the dates for the next big face-to-face collaboration meeting and it is scheduled right on top of the Virtual Con.  The meeting will run March 5-9.  This almost wouldn't be an issue except that the meeting this time is in Italy and I'll be traveling home on the 10th.  Bascially that means I will not be able to attend the con or MC things.  If we don't want to change the date, then someone else will have to step up to coordinate things the days of the con.  There is a chance, since the meeting is in Europe, that I won't be going but most likely I will.

So the question is, do we move the con date or leave it be.  So far the only people who have signed up are myself, jedi, and Inigo.

I'd be OK with a one week delay as it gives more credence to the excuse that taking time off and sitting in front of the computer is my b-day present. Despite the response in the poll and the associated threads I don't know that response will be that huge so I'd hate to loose you to the convention.

The weekend of March 16 I have a scout camp out.  But I haven't pony'ed up yet so my vote doesn't count much.  The week end of March 23 is better.  I do want to register and participate to get the patch.

I'm good any weekend, just have to ask for it off. B-day is in March so I'm calling this a gift to myself and guilting the spouse to go along. Boss is easier- he actually likes me.

The weekend of the 23rd is GaryCon in honor of Gary Gygax as w00t pointed out earlier.  If we want to try to pull in other outside this forum community we should probably avoid that weekend.

I can easily do the weekends of March 30 and March 2.  I also run the risk of traveling sometime in the latter half of Q1 but the modus operandi for work is to be back by the weekend.
