SyFy channel has jumped the shark.

Actually they jumped it long before the first installment of that "franchise".

I saw 5 seconds of it and the acting was so bad I was forced to change the channel. Someone said Bo Dereck was in it?

It just occurred to me that with the "success" of the Sharknado series I think we can expect more the same- more back and more of peeps trying to duplicate the success of the back. EDit: did I speak too soon? Just saw a promo for the stars of Police Academy in Lavalanchula- lava tarantulas.

I don't think I could equate "success" with something that goes straight to SyFy before going straight to video.

I think the only possible worse programming than SyFy would be "watch the sock under the bed collect dust" channel.

It is sad that they have sunk so low.  I remember when they had quality programming on the Sci Fi channel, like Dune and Riverworld - actual science fiction novels converted to movies & miniseries.

Now they can't even spell their own name.

Well Sharknado and Lavalanchula have me ready to jump on the bash them band wagon but I have been enjoying Killjoys and Dark Matter is starting to catch my interest more. Initially Defiance seemed like it had potential but after watching an episode last month I cancelled the DBR from recording the series for me.

And that's where the down turn began.

Ever since it's been nothing but every shark-dinosaur-alligator-spider hybrid monster movie imaginable with special effects that make the 50s & 60s monster movies look cutting edge.

The pop culture influence of Sharknado is spreading: A Maine radio station called "The Shark" now has a "sharknado of commercial free music" which made my drive time to Maine last night very enjoyable as the fastest trigger to me changing a station is commercails.

That because all of the good shows on SyFy are Canadian show. Killjoys and Dark Matter are a Space productions. Same with 12 Monkeys. Orphan Black is a Space and BBC Canada production. Lost Girl and Continuum are a Showcase production.

Syfy channel has just had the problem many cable channels haave had; they must attract advertisers to stay in business. Remember when MTV showed nothing but music videos? They had to quit when those videos became too easy to get on demand on the internet so they changed to ah I am not even sure what since I never watch that channel.

Syfy has switched to less Sci Fi and more "Geek World" with many shows no where near Sci Fi like that Quantum Cooking show or those magic contest shows.

Of course the funniest part of the "Anniversary Show" was watching guest celebs trying to explain why WWE wrestling was on Sy Fy channel.
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

Firefly had more viewers than the other Fox sci-fi shows on the air at the time yet they canned it. I figure there was some sort of politics in the Fox office involved... lets face it the show explored several themes upsetting to different people's sensibilities.

1) We leave Earth because it can no longer support Humans and the theme song sort of implies destroying the land & water, the hippies would like that but the folks who think the tree huggers are wrong would not. Also bound to piss off some religious folks too (not sure why but it would).

2) English not the only language, shock horror the other major language was Chinese & though American Cultural Elements are present the future people have combined elements American & Chinese Culture along with the show also showing the survival of other cultural elements from many cultures in the background... this global scale melting pot into something new I think really offended some people.

3) One of the main characters was a high end prostitute... you can murder people left and right on tv, have rapists, mass murders, sexual infidelity/fornication for free being shown, implied or discussed, torture, drug dealing and tons of other vile human activities... but acknowledge that people do pay for it & make a living that way & are not unlikeable people & it's legal, well we can't have that!  I know that offended people.

4) Religion: Even though Christianity is clearly present & even with a preacher on board... there are clearly other religions, it is doubtful all the crew was Christian. Okay once again this offends people

5) Forced Centralized Government VS Local Freedom of Self Government theme and how the little guys (citizens with no power) have a nay near impossible chance to live lives without doing crime to survive, get abused, and generally are neglected... okay that whole theme is offensive to people who believe centralized government works, just is. Also the whole North vs South theme being explored in it's real roots of power distribution is offensive, as some folks still want to teach/believe that war was about slavery & not a disagreement over who should have more power the Feds or the States. Ignorance + Political Agendas = Offensive.

6)Possible Capitalism vs Socialism or Communism theme was also present, as there where several times comments where made that the Government did not like people (little people) making a profit. Okay you got to understand there are a lot of die hard Socialists & Communists in the media so showing the flaws of such systems is offensive to them, honestly the show did show the flaws of both systems... all economic systems are flawed BTW, but to true believers they can't see that, and if you read both idealistic Capitalist works or Commie stuff the idea is presented in all idealists works on economy systems, that if the children are raised right by the society then it will be all rainbows & blue birds singing... the idea that you can socially engineer people through education to behave & think your way the "right way", even if it goes against human nature & drives is in all idealist works, the idea you can make people better it is in everyone's writings. It is also an idea that predates the modern industrial economic system writers and can be found in religious texts from around the world... you would think someone by now would have figured out social engineering as it has been applied does not work... but no. So every smarty pants who thinks you can brainwash the populace to think 100% the right way, their way, would find the idea of people rebelling against blindly doing as told for their own good & societies good offensive too... especially offensive to people who like to manipulate others and profit from it, as the show explorers what the powerful do including sacrificing their own children to maintain status and safety.

This show just offended everyone... right or left, by shooting sacred cows all over the place. So the people in charge of Fox got offended and canned the show... even though the viewing sci-fi public liked it, kept the 2 lame shows no one was watching instead. So I think it offended Fox big wigs on some level.

To address each of those points...

1> I'm not politically correct, so I enjoyed this aspect of the series.
2> I'm not politically correct, so I enjoyed this aspect of the series also.
3> I'm not politically correct, so I enjoyed this aspect of the series as well.
4> I'm not politically correct, so I enjoyed this aspect of the series too.
5> I'm not politically correct, so I enjoyed this aspect of the series to boot.
6> I'm not politically correct, so I enjoyed this aspect of the series equally.

You might say that the fact that it may offend a lot of people is a reason I liked it. It's a pity they weren't flying a Confederate Flag on the ship. Tongue out

Yeah we loved it too, I mean it was more real than Star Trek as far as the way people are, the way government can be, the reason people do crimes and deep pasts some of which we never get to explore like who was Sheperd before he found religion, why did the Alliance treat him special and how did he know the things he knew? Such a bummer, they killed the show. Watching characers mature and develop and bond... it was so not Star Trek all grimmy. Though old Gene was a wanted the Ferengi to have huge cock pieces... the folks working on the show had to remind him... family tv Gene, no cock pieces, lol... can you image it, would have made them even more hilariuos but creepy pervy but not PC.  Foot in mouth

There were more problems with Firefly then just cancelled. The original pilot was scrapped and a new one written in one weekend and shot just as quickly with the original pilot reedited and used later. Also several episodes were shown out of order. This left viewers confused and the ad campaign did not match what was aired. Add to this that Josh Weadon's other two shows Buffy and Angel were also cancelled at the same time and you see there was something going on the public was never told. Maybe in another ten years we will learn.
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

Ah the Ferengi one of the few acts of bigotry in the Star Trek Universe. They were supposed to be the new big bad guys. Nobody told the director of the episode they first appeared in and he went with they are short (max height for a Ferengi actor was 5 foot 4 inches) so they must be comic relief. Since short people can never be taken seriously.
