jedion357 October 5, 2017 - 6:53pm | Local comic book store sponsors gaming but it seems the local RPGers are committed D20 gamers: versions 3.5, 5th and pathfinder. I am loath to play D20 with few exceptions: B/X and Stars Without Number was rereading SwoN and the setting for that is wide open- referee can do what ever he wants. and its rather easy to incorporate your favorite movie- Battle Beyond the Stars particularly fits SwoN or Silent Running, Event Horizon, even the Aliens movies. SF is of course very canned and confining and I've been a long time fan but I'm feeling rather seduced by a sand box setting like SwoN. Anyone else have an opinion on canned like SF or sand box like SwoN? I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
rattraveller October 5, 2017 - 7:03pm | I have had to give up many games over the years because the group I play with either moved on to other games or moved out of the area and new people were not interested in them. You can game with the people you know and play their game or try to recruit others to what you want. Either way DO NOT play a game you don't like just because it is all that is played. You will just not enjoy it. Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
JCab747 October 5, 2017 - 8:01pm | Technically, Star Frontiers can be as open as you want it to be, though you do get the idea it is in a small area of space. Joe Cabadas |
JCab747 October 5, 2017 - 8:02pm | Much like you could play D&D and not have purchased Greyhawk... back in the old TSR days. Joe Cabadas |
jedion357 October 5, 2017 - 9:28pm | I think rolling naked on a fire ant's nest would be more fun than D&D 3.5 but that just me. Like I said I could possibly play a D20 system but it would be limited to very few possiblities. I'm simply enamored right now with the setting in SwoN as it's really open and will allow for ripping off a slew of movies and books. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Rum Rogue October 6, 2017 - 2:14am | I just picked up the Star Finder game from Paizo. It has a a built in background, but I feel like I can let it drop and go my own way with it. In fact the first adventure I ran was the one-shot "Aramax one" for Star Frontiers. I am debating on running the party through the Volturnus series next. Time flies when your having rum. Im a government employee, I dont goof-off. I constructively abuse my time. |
jedion357 October 6, 2017 - 3:40am | In fact the first adventure I ran was the one-shot "Aramax one" for Star Frontiers. I am debating on running the party through the Volturnus series next. There is a review in the works of a Star Finder product: the battle mat, I highly endorse it. One side is barren mars like surface and the other is ship's decking with 1" square grid. suitable for water soluble, dry erase and permanent marker. There is a way to erase permanent marker from the mat. I like it and glad I bought it. @ Rum Rogue, since you've bought and run the game would you consider writing a review of it as an RPG for the magazine? I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |

@ Rum Rogue, since you've bought and run the game would you consider writing a review of it as an RPG for the magazine? Funny you should ask, I was thinking about that after I posted last night. I would really like to, but I am horrible at writing and wouldn't know how to start or keep the review organized. Drop me a message off-line at rum.rogue@gmail.com Time flies when your having rum. Tchklinxa October 8, 2017 - 12:50pm | Well I like games, but yes some systems are better than others, many I have played only one time as I did not feel they were improvements over d20 or d100. Getting others to play, can be a problem. I have not tried to set up anything outside my immediate friends but have thought about it... an option is to introduce people to the games you like by GMing at the comic/game store. If you want you can make SF a bigger sandbox. "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
rattraveller October 10, 2017 - 6:26am | Picked up a game recently call "Space Frontiers". Only the Player's Handbook is available right now. Wondering if anyone else has gotten it or heard about it? Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
JCab747 October 10, 2017 - 7:48am | Picked up a game recently call "Space Frontiers". Only the Player's Handbook is available right now. Wondering if anyone else has gotten it or heard about it? I saw a mention of it on the Facebook site. But that's all I know about it. Joe Cabadas |
Tchklinxa October 10, 2017 - 8:14pm | I am curious about this game and the new MA too. "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
Dave the Lost October 11, 2017 - 9:22am | I have Space Frontiers. Mechanically it is very much like Star Frontiers. The background has a Star Frontiers feel. The species are different, for one thing they are all bipeds, but still have a SF feel. The analogy I would use is to say that Frontier Space is to Star Frontiers as Mutant Future is to Gamma World. A tribute, but not a strict retro-clone. |
JCab747 October 11, 2017 - 1:57pm | It looks like it is inspired by the classic SF artwork. Joe Cabadas |
jedion357 October 11, 2017 - 4:44pm | Actually, It's Frontier Space and it was written by some old hands on this site. CleanCutRogue and w00t. At this point w00t has focused on some other demension of his life and has completely withdrawn from gaming and no long has a writing credit on Frontier Space. I was thrown off when you said Space Frontier wondering if someone else beat him to publication. Bill and I chatted the other day he sent me preview copies to review for the site of the players and game master's rule books. In some ways its Star Frontiers with the serial numbers filed off and in others it is its own game. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |

Bill and I chatted the other day For those not in the know, Bill = CleanCutRogue who was one of the founders of this site (IIRC the original owner/administrator). I was wondering what happend with FS since the DWD site fell off the web, good to see it still has some traction. Where is this viewable besides facebook (and how is Bill doing these days)? |
jedion357 October 13, 2017 - 8:46am | Bill sounded upbeat, he's done a lot of play testing and the player's book I believe is out and game master book should be out soon? I'd have to go back and scroll through the chat thread. I suggested he should write some conversion articles for SF to FS. We actually hit a lot of topics like people we both know who haven't been around and a few personal topics. It was a good chat. I did not realize DWD was off line, I think that was a thing of his business partner who has left the business. I'm guessing it's available on drive thru. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
