Volturnus – caverns

Flitters are small winged mammals that enjoy dark places. They live in the caverns below the Burning Lands, eating insects, small mammals, and carrion. Flitters are generally passive, but loud noises, light, and smoke will cause them to attack.

Each flitter has a 50% chance of carrying a disease that will be transmitted to a bite victim. Eight hours after being bitten, the infected player will begin to suffer from a fever. This will soon be followed by the chills. The fever will continue for three days, during which time the player will be incapable of any action. If the victim is not treated with antibody plus during this time, he will die on the beginning of the fourth day. Even if the victim receives a dose of antibody plus, he must wait 24 hours before he feels healthy enough to do anything but rest.

The Khezu is one of the creepiest monsters this series has to offer. This disturbing Flying Wyvern made its first appearance in Monster Hunter 1 and has shown up in various games since then. It primarily hides in dark caves and only emerges to hunt for food. It has no eyes so it tracks its prey by sniffing their scent. To add to the creepy factor, Khezu is eerily silent while you fight it.

Once it's found its target, Khezu will attack by extending its rubbery neck out to swallow them whole. It also has the ability to generate electricity around its body to protect itself and spit out electrical discharges to paralyze its foes.

The snow sloth is the only animal known to prowl the snow fields during Alcaz.zar's winter. Growing up to 5 meters long, the sloth resembles a huge weasel with coarse white hair and stocky legs. Although not a fast runner, the sloth can lope for days at a time across snow, supported by its huge padded feet.

If the snow sloth strikes a victim with an attack roll lower than 20, the victim is held and squeezed. Each successive round the character takes 5d10 points of damage automatically until killed, or until the character successfully breaks a wrestling hold.

The snow sloth lives primarily by eating hibernating lokukku. It finds a tree where a tribe is spending the winter, breaks through an air hole and slithers down for a feast. In their lethargic state, the lokkuku can rarely arouse themselves to fight, but if they do,the Snow Sloth is usually driven off.

Somnacanth is a highly dangerous, serpentine Leviathan that is very territorial. It mostly travels at night and has been mistaken for a mermaid due to its silhouette cast against the moonlit sky. If you encounter this slippery customer, be careful because this monster can put you to sleep by breathing sleeping powder in your face.

Aside from a sleep-inducing breath attack, Somnacanth can also run circles around its prey with exceptional speed to slash at your blind spots with its sharp claws. After taking enough damage, Somnacanth will seek a clam to consume it, instantly healing its wounds.
