bossmoss October 8, 2015 - 12:44am | Just for the record, I liked it. |
TerlObar October 8, 2015 - 2:53pm | Have not seen it but have heard it was really, really well done. In fact the reviewer declared it to be the best hard science fiction movie ever. The book is on the top of my list as the next book I'm going to read as soon as I have a chance (probably Chrismas time when the current semester is over). Ad Astra Per Ardua! jedion357 October 8, 2015 - 6:36pm | Read and loved the book. Would love to get the opinion of a NASA consultant on the political stuff behind the scenes at NASA that is portrayed in the book, (not going to name names on that). Good sci-fi without any aliens, lasers, FTL travel, or things blowing up, well not the things blowing up bit as that did happen a little- just not in the typical action movie way. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
TerlObar October 8, 2015 - 8:40pm | Yeah it would be good to get an inside opinion, too bad I don't know anyone that's worked at NASA or been involved in NASA politics ... oh wait, half my contact list. I'll let you know once I've read the book but I believe the author used to work at Sandia National Lab which is much the same environment so it's probably pretty accurate. Ad Astra Per Ardua! jedion357 October 9, 2015 - 7:45pm | OK, I just saw the movie and I think the book is better, more detail and the movie glosses over some things which then makes some of the movie not make a lot of sense. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |

OK, I just saw the movie and I think the book is better That's usually the case. <cough>Marvel and DC movies</cough> |
jedion357 October 10, 2015 - 5:44am | With the book you really understand the danger he's in but on film its just Matt D going along doing stuff and the feeling of danger doesn't come through. The CGI vistas of Mars were nice but not nice enough to warrent paying $12 to see them in the theater and the action is a little staid after Jason Bourne movies. I like it because its sci-fi of the Star Frontiers caliber but its a little ho hum. Now if they made Semper Mars into a movie it would probably not be as good as the book but since there is a desperately out numbered unit of US space marines making a desperate stand against Chinese space marines the action quotent would be quite high and that movie would be far more exciting.
