Tchklinxa October 11, 2015 - 1:26pm | 16 the last one... I know it is cheesy but this is a form of the classic MA storyline... If this show was done today it would be way better. The problem with 1970 sci-fi is it follows a formula for TV, networks then & even movie companies today often feel the audience is stupid, will not get it and dumb down a movie or show, so in the 70s we have to have the intro narrative, that reveals the plot right away taking all the mystery and fun of the reveal away... sigh. The show also tried to push some special effects limits, and could not pull it off, but today could. Today we would not need to do a dome an episode either, heck you could go a whole season before the meddling kids discover they are not in a mega domed city, or underground complex but in space and try and understand what that means. But I love the 60-70s sci fi sets. "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
jedion357 October 14, 2015 - 5:15am | It's so dated but interesting none the less. Kind of reminds me of Metamorphosis Alpha with out the mutations. Kind of MA meets West World mash up but without Yule Brenner trying to kill you, though Yule Brenner probably would have made it better. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Tchklinxa October 14, 2015 - 9:26am | Yule would have totally made it better... mutants are discussed and there was the giant mutant hyper intelligent bees which of course must be killed in one episode. Aliens of sorts make apperances too. Very dated but it has that 70 vibe from whence SF came into existances. I am interested in set elements, wardrobe, little things like that... plus the ship domes is very much like a SF agro ship in concept. There is a definate formula to 60-70 even 80s TV sci-fi. The naration where too much plot is given away is part of that formula. "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
Malcadon October 14, 2015 - 1:01pm | ...plus the ship domes is very much like a SF agro ship in concept. Douglas Trumbull worked on the set pieces and special effects on the show; not too long before The Starlost, he also worked on the 1972 film Silent Running. Much of the sets and props from the movie were recycled for the show. |
Tchklinxa October 15, 2015 - 4:50am | Silent Running yeah it has been a while since I saw that, but it was basically a dome ship. "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
jedion357 October 15, 2015 - 5:27am | It's been awhile but there are things about Silent Running that never made much sense to me; like why it was necessary to blow the bio-domes up . I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Tchklinxa October 15, 2015 - 9:14am | I could not figure that out either... last bit of "nature" and they are going to destroy it? "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
rattraveller October 15, 2015 - 6:34pm | You do have to be impressed by all the different uses of green insulation foam padding. Some Ark contractor made a huge killing on that stuff. Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
Tchklinxa October 16, 2015 - 4:34am | LOL yeah I noticed the "egg crate" green foam every where, bounce tube spring boards, beds, sensors for the door, and the conveniently placed office holding cells. Everyone needs high tech paralysis cells in their office. What my hubby noticed was what he called the Star Trek wall maps, and in deed they are on that older ship... Next Gen like. "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
jedion357 October 18, 2015 - 4:14am | What I loved most about Silent Running back in the day was the go chart and the robots- probably no surprise that thing like that would appeal to a 12 year old boy. What like now is the ship model, and its only a small bit of prop dressing that doesn't really figure into the story but the jump suit with the patches on it; its the antithesis of all things Star Trek and it shouts Star Frontiers to me. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Tchklinxa October 18, 2015 - 7:13am | Yeah the bots, I liked those too. I remember the guy was in the jump suit... I am guessing the idea being conveyed plot wise that profits are more important than life. and as long as human life can be artificially maintained by a corporate system the ecology (other life) is in danger of extinction as it is unimportant. Don't ask me what they all are eating on Earth... maybe solent green? "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
