Pet Peaves from TV and movies

This bugs me a lot:

Bad CPR portrayed on screen, namely bent arms that dont accomplish anything in the way of chest compressions, it just bugs me even thought my CPR certification is out of date. i think the reason that this happens is that for reasons to deal with filming they like the "victim" on a gurney and then the life saver must do CPR without being able to keep his arms straight.

I have done CPR on people on gurneys and my elbows never bent.

I think often they don't have a fake person they are doing CPR on, so that is a living person, and if they start compressions on a person who doesn't need them they may hurt them, so they would have to bend the elbows, and pull the punches so to speak. Anyhow that's my guess.

I buy that but it has bothered me all the way back to my tean years when I use to get certified every year with the boy scouts and a McGuiver episode did it that way and I was like dude that was wrong.

Yes, my wife and I learned CPR (she is a nurse), and we have the same reaction when we see CPR done on TV.  The bent arms aren't the only thing people get wrong.  They usually get ALL of it wrong.

On the positive side, we loved the scene in Evolution when the guy is trying to practice for his firefighters exam, and he is using the CPR dummy we all used in high school health class... and he even says, "are you all right?" - loved it!

The rates or compressions to breaths have change since I was a Boy Scout, I believe they are now 30 to 2 but if an actor or director was remembering old information on CPR they'd get it wrong for that reason.

However if they took the time to get things right I'd certainly respect that. and yet time is money when filming so the chances of me seeing it done right are slim and none.

I took a CPR class in high-school P.E. (a whole month or so of not having to do workouts!), but that was over 18 years ago. (I should really get a refresher course... or check it out on YouTube.)

I think they get it wrong on TV as doing it right on a healthy person might be dangerous -- the actor might apply too much force on the chest. But they should really get it right, so people would remember the right way in case of an emergency.

I would like the Red Cross to stop playing God with CPR myself... first they are the wankers that fought it even being taught to the public, now they have a monopoly on it, charge damn to much to certify and keep changing crap... I remember the no Respiration year, I wonder how many people died from that little experiment which I questioned at the time in class. I am not the only one wondering why the Red Cross keeps changing stuff after all these years of people doing it. It is like First Aid people still bleed the same now as they did 20 years ago. I just take the CHP Tests now... oddly I pass every 5 years without giving Red Cross $.

Unlimited ammunition and the fact that the sound of a firearm indoors doesn't make you temporarily deaf.

Ever been to an indoor range and had your ear protection slip? Yea...that.

LOL the Magic Bullets! Foot in mouth Yeah guns are loud! Very rarely do you have people shouting "what" at each other... I think I have only seen that 1 time ever on tv, and that is because they actually discharged the weapon next to another person in a confined space... he was freaking thought he was deaf for good. Yep they never show that.

I love old Westerns gunfights with sixguns and no reloading.

Or the "stunts" / "special effects" that if that happened in RL would = 100% death... BW not biffing it in the one Die Hard film with all the cubic yards of water pressing on his body, he still hangs on under all that water pressure, no way (of course there are a ton of no way scenes in all the Die hard films).  Or the actors in the scene are right there next to the big ass explosion, which would in real life produce a wave of air sufficient to kill, all those nice squishy organs inside them would be toast from the blast wave.

I love films that poke fun of Hollywood, that was one of the things I liked about Last Action Hero, so funny... Arnold as Hamlet LOl
