Putraack June 21, 2015 - 5:21pm | Our favorite game is the focus of a podcast by the Dead Games Society, http://dgsociety.net/episode15-exploring-star-frontiers/ |

jedion357 June 22, 2015 - 7:13pm | Just listenned to it. Liked a few things they said but cringed at a few too. One of the pod casters brags about not knowing the rules despite running them twice at conventions, however they contend that the simpicity of the rules make them ideal for a convention game which is only going to last 3-4 hours. I would concure since combat is so fast play. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Tchklinxa June 22, 2015 - 8:11pm | I cringed at that too, but agreed the game has a good fast pace. I liked the black-hole idea, about the guys doing a mining gig having time dilation and they have know clue the Sathar War has happened and they are unarmed and Sathar show up... very nice idea. On the whole I enjoyed the podcast. "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
jedion357 June 22, 2015 - 8:14pm | I'm curious about the feasibility of "mining" Hawking radiation from a Black hole I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Abub June 24, 2015 - 10:08pm | Yeah it seems like a bad idea... you know throwing away your frends and family. So I also shouted out load when they present the totally wrong way skills work, except I'm planning on doing something similar as a house rule next time I am GM. Having them roll full stat % + if a skill applies a trained bonus + 5% per skill level where the trained bonus is skill level 1&2=10%, 3&4=15% and 5&6=20%. I will no longer ever look at a subskill. It will be just a question of if a skill applies the the thing you are trying to do. ----------------------------------------------- |
Tchklinxa June 25, 2015 - 5:04am | Well I was thinking about the time dilation too here are some thoughts... PCs knew going in that the TD existed but $ wise or $ incentive made good, so they are contracted to spend X TD time years working there which ='s X RL time but it is not too extreme, so does not seem like a big deal to them. PCs have no family connections: orphans, clones, widows, widowers, last of clan, kicked out of trade house... PCs are on parol from prison, this is the only job they could get with the added advantage of less opportunity to get in trouble. And finally Hawking radiation: Electromagnetic radiation that, according to theory, should be emitted by a black hole. The radiation is due to the black hole capturing one of a particle-antiparticle pair created spontaneously near to the event horizon.

TerlObar June 25, 2015 - 3:54pm | The problem with Hawking radiation is the the bigger the black hole, the less energetic the radiation is. He had them around a supermassive black hole which emits only at long (low energy) wavelengths. So it's a cool idea, but not really economically viable. Ad Astra Per Ardua! The problem with Hawking radiation is the the bigger the black hole, the less energetic the radiation is. He had them around a supermassive black hole which emits only at long (low energy) wavelengths. So it's a cool idea, but not really economically viable. Okay so for Hawkings one would need a smaller singularity. But what sort of energy is the long wavelengths? Radiation? Of course there could be another reason the PCs are out on the edge of a black-hole... the Frontiers version on "Devil's Island" could be there, a hostile world that supports life or an artificial facility where the prisoners are left. Or there could be other things being collected or studied, a science station might exist. "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
jedion357 June 28, 2015 - 2:55am | what if a corporation discovered an alien station hovering near a black hole. at the heart of the station is what appears to be another singularity. and the best guess of the experts is that it was for harvesting something like Hawking radiation. corporation keeps things quiet to study and see if they cannot reverse engineer tech as quite a bit is clearly beyond the current tech in the frontier. And while this is going on suddenly bad things start to happen. adventure could build to an explosive finish or would that be an implosive finish with a couple of singularities involved? One thing that could come out of this is that if the PCs are trying to study and figure out stuff you could rule that some Zebs equipment like maser weapons and maser mesh dont exist in the Frontier and these could be amoung the items on the station giving PCs a chance to figure out "alien weapons" and defenses. I this way the PC can own alien weapon systems that no one has defenses against for a few adventures (till next year when the corporation's R&D rolls out the new weapon and defense system for sale in the Frontier) I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Tchklinxa June 28, 2015 - 5:33am | Good Idea "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
jedion357 June 28, 2015 - 12:45pm | This is what I do, I'm an idea whore and I come up with ideas.
Actually all you now is a decent map of an alien space station / black hole observatory , a catchy name like "Event Horizon" brain storm a list of 6-12 bad things that can happen pick the 5-6 best and write the adventure. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
