jedion357 June 6, 2015 - 1:42pm | What level of skill should a frontier citizen have to be called a doctor? For example I'm messing around with the Cassidine Jones and the Raiders of Volturnus idea and casting the PCs in the "Indiana Jones" roll who is famously called Dr. Jones" throughout the franchise. With PCs getting a free level 2 science skill to start plus 2 more first level skills it doesn't seem right to accord them the title of Doctor. Perhaps professor? I'm considering using the Triad Intitute of Technology as a sponsoring organization in a very Indiana Jones style adventure with a Volturnus campaign mash up. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
rattraveller June 6, 2015 - 7:45pm | Skill level 1 EMT 2 Paramedic 3 Nurse 4 Physician Assitant 5 Doctor 6 Mad Scientist Specialist Just remember what it takes to fly a shuttle into orbit? Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
jedion357 June 6, 2015 - 8:18pm | 1 EMT 2 Paramedic 3 Nurse 4 Physician Assitant 5 Doctor 6 Mad Scientist Specialist Just remember what it takes to fly a shuttle into orbit? I was thinking in terms of "Skilled Frontier" where you'd have science skills that could confer the title of Phd. thus a shuttle pilot would not be level 6. We should consider the sub skills of AD, your EMT is performing a variety of surgeries. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
rattraveller June 7, 2015 - 6:57pm | EMTs do not perform surgery. Check your state medical laws on what different levels of medical professional can do. I was unfair to nurses. There are several levels of nursing, with the highest allowed to prescribe medications. Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
jedion357 June 7, 2015 - 7:15pm | skill level 1 in AD performs surgeries thus equating it to an EMT doesn't work. Perhaps medical skill in the Frontier is more influenced by dralasite or vrusk traditions as opposed to human? I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Tchklinxa June 15, 2015 - 7:07pm | Good point on the effect Alien ideals might have on medical jobs, also if you look at Zebs skills could be tweeked to go as high as level 8. EMT's do not normally perform surgery in civilian life, but in a military setting in the right situation non-doctors do perform surgery. My daughter did a minor but necessary field surgery on another sailor, she was not a medic. "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
KRingway June 20, 2015 - 8:36am | Perhaps instead the 'Dr.' in 'Dr. Jones' refers to his PhD (or Frontier equivalent). A person can have the title 'doctor' without it referring to medicine. I have several friends who have the offical title of 'Doctor' as they have a PhD. None have PhDs based in medicine. |
TerlObar June 20, 2015 - 9:21am | Yeah, my wife and I are both "Dr. Stephens" but our doctoral degrees are in astronomy, not medicine. And since she finished first we, were Dr. and Mr. Stephens for a while . When I'm in the physics department where she is faculty, the students call me "the other Dr. Stephens". Ad Astra Per Ardua!
