Use this in your next game:

Its not the lava the PCs have to worry about but the thunderstorm like effects, ash, rock and lightning from the skies. Rescue the colony, complete the corporate espionage, or whatever the current job is and get out.

When I visited Pompeii I learned that despite what the movies show lava didn't kill the people there. As above and the recent volcano in Japan it was the poison gas released that did it. Which can make for some fun for the PCs as they race to save the population from the gases but are blocked by lava flows both on the ground and thermal currents disrupting air traffic.

Another fun fact at Pompeii they never found any cats and the only dog they found was chained in a yard.
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

Also if a volcano is also a lake or has a lot of ice/snow on it when it goes you can end up with hot mudslides rushing down on top of all the other fun.
