Nothing to much this year that made be go wow- even the tribute to Fenway Park's centennial was pretty ho-hum- in the interest of fairness the sand castles are not finished till tomarrow. however they have been more spectacular in the past though I did notice a trend in having holes going through the sand castles (notice the holes in the following pic) Though the holes through the sand castle is probably technically difficult what i saw today just didn't do much to make the sand castles more impressive except in one case. And funny there were a couple that hand not gone in for demonstrating the latest bit of technical profiecency and these were pretty good looking.

At any rate I snapped a shot of the vrusk for your veiwing pleasure

Well with the bottle neck at publishing the SFman being illustrations (meaning we cant publish if we dont have illustrations) I started doing illustrations and dusting off forgotten skills from 20+ years ago to elliminate that road block.

Jedion is improving his yazirian drawing skills greatly. I really like some of the posing done. A few of the more feral yazirians are really cool.

Thank you, I've picked up "The Artists Complete Guide to Facial Expressions" which is quite thick and since I'm going to be in a waiting room for 8 hrs today I figured I'd occupy myself with that to see if I cant adapt its principles for the human face toward the yazirian face. I also think I might be able to adapt them to the dralasite face so that drals are less boring to draw.

I've been basing the yaz body off human poses and I need to spend some serious time with the human anatomy but human anatomy for artist books tend to have a lot of nude pictures in them and my wife is so weird about stuff that I'm anticipating a problem with that and accusations of looking at porn. So I wait till everyone is in bed and look at artistic nude pictures on the Internet late at night as if I was looking at porn!Foot in mouth or use reference poses that are essentially clothed figures or lack details like facial features and nipples but just focus on the pose. Since my mind likes a puzzle to figure out its as much fun as doing a Suduku puzzle to take a human pose and figure out how to yazirian-ize it.

Funny as i study this book on human expression and part one is just about the structure of the head and digs into the structure of the skull I'm finding that I very much want to get my hands on a yazirian skull. Any body got one? Actually, that may be a new puzzle for me to tackle- studying pictures of yazirian fases and extrapolating the underlying structure of the skull. Perhaps even sculpting one. The author of the book reported that Norman Rockwell's art teacher made him sketch 200 pictures of the human skull from all angles. Rockwell said that at the time he thought this was excessive but latter was thankful because of the ability to see the underlying structure in a face.

There is a small picture of a Yaz skull in the image included in the species description in the expanded rules book.  It is a side view showing the brain inside the skull.

Yeah i spotted that when I googled for SF images from the phone. Did you notice the same picture for the dralasite? The one with three legs and two arms up in the air like he's Richard Nixon? I just drew that one as Nixon but I have to get some refference photos of someone standing like an X in a suit so I can refine the picture. Working title is, "I Am Not A Crook!"

After doing some comparative searches on Google, I've come to the conclusion that the yazirian skull pictured in the AD book looks like a chimpansee or some other monkey skull but definetely not a gorilla.  For fun I looked up replica skulls- a web site that is marketing them has them for $210 but ebay has them for $110 to $140. Think I'll settle for sculpting my own.

Looking at the picture in AD i think you could cast a sphere in clear polyester resin with a few marbles in it and the resin tinged with dye. I'D do that except my supply of resin is so old at this point it remain tacky after hardening.

Here's a pic called "Yaz at the beach"
http://s237.photobucket.com/albums/ff83/jedion357/Star%20Frontiers/?action=view&current=Yazatthebeach002.png

I didn't like how it turned out but I just got some watercolor pencils and wanted to try them out so this got colored.

Needless to say, like any art medium, water color pencils take work to master and I have a ways to go.

Color is my weakness as well. Having a mild case of color blindness doesn't help the matter.

Jedion, you are getting better at the body proportions. They look good, but the coloring as you said needs some work. At least you try, which is something I will not attempt. I do not wish to offend the stick figure god by mutilating his subjects.

I was happy with that picture till I drew the feet. and then I just moved on but I needed to try out the water color pencils and figured this was good enough to test it on. Actually I think I'd like to revisit this subject matter. I kind of like the two yaz at the beach.

Hands & feet are by far the most difficult things to draw. I've found that when drawing Yaz feet that it helps to think of them as hands with heels.

I've used chimp and gorilla feet as visual reference, but I've also found that just focusing in on the face and chest is a nice cheater way to deal with hands and feet.

RE: hairy yaz- I was going with an imagined short hair that would not not require drawing all the hair.

But for those you who have to have your simian aliens hairy:
