Your right about the forced change of things. The Russo-Japanese War of 1912 showed where warfare was going but no one participating in WWI took the hint. Not even the Russians.

So what didn't the UPF learn from SWI before they went into SWII?

That is an excellent question! We should start a thread on that. However we also need to understand what equipment and assets were used by the sathar as well as extrapolate probable doctrines they would have used. No doubt SF-2 will be a mine of information in this as the volturnus campaign will be fairly close in time to SW2 and their doctrines will not have changed all that much. And since they were a space faring race 900 years ago when the destroyed Volturnus' society the first time their equipment does not change much or if it does it changes at glacial speeds

I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

I like it Inigo, but I don't think that Sathar are all that interested in honor. I see them more as result driven. The upper class Sathar wouldn't be concerned with getting killed if the battle turned against him but he might waste the underlings if it accomplished his objective or things didn't goes his way.

I still am not for exploding weapons, maybe attach a device on to or in the Sathar themselves but to exploding weapons make them useless for other Sathar to pick and use too. Who wants to pick up a dead comrades gun it it might cook off when you are using it. Wasteful. I don't see Sathar as being stupid or wasteful. In fact, I think they would be more likely to send the slave races in strapped with booby trapped weapons, exploding vests, or surgically implanted grenades (i say grenade but I mean any boom type weapon).

Not sure I'd use the exploding weapons in my verse. I always took it that the "suicidal" intentions of the sathar had little to do with achieving results but rather to deny technology or intel to the enemy. Lastly, the exploding weaponry tactic, much like the crippled destroyer in KH, would only work once. Besides, depending on the trigger mechanism for your battle rifle bombs, your enemy may find the proper frequency and then POOF.

But along the idea of suicidal attacks and higher caste sathar throwing away the lower caste... why not toy with the idea of a chemical injection pack imbeded into the sathar troops which, when the sathar general triggers it, releases chems into the lower caste soldiers -- spiking their resistance to damage, strength, agility and endurance while at the same time destroying their internal organs and nervous system. The troops would only last a few dozen or more turns of some such, but during that time they may well be unstoppable -- giving those higher caste leaders a chance to bug out.

While I like the idea of the Sathar Super Soldiers I just think this is something they would not do.

My reasoning is that the Sathar are obviously experts at genetic engineering and cyber enhancing but not a single one of their creations have involved an intelligent species. They seem much more interested in destorying intelligence than enhancing any including their own.
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

And that speaks to a fear linked to an event in their past. Their own version of the Oedipal Complex- their own creators enslaved them and used them badly and they fear any other intelligent species they cannot enslave for themselves.

Well that is definitely one explanation for their strange behavior.
