Hello all,

I'm new here and mostly play games other than Star Frontiers.  However, a few months ago, I ran a Star Frontiers game to play test the game for a review in a column called "Lost Game Safari" for Knights of the Dinner Table Magazine.  I had a great time playing "Crash on Volturnus" with people who had played little except 4th Edition D&D.  The journal can be found here:

http://blog.myspace.com/max_writer

You'll have to pan down or check out the archives as it was back in July 2009.  There are quite a few details as I audio record all my game sessions now.

Funny- in my 3.5 and 4e disenchantment I've had a strong itch to try something different

ran down a PDF of Boothill and got it printed, scored a still shrink wrapped box of 1e Top Secret
but after looking the rules over I pretty much lost interest.

Star Frontiers just has the magic mojo after all these years- its fun to play and I love it!
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

There's only the one game though it is, of course, open for more in the future. The rules were interesting and if anyone is intereted in reading the review, it's in Knights of the Dinner Table # 155. We used the advanced rules and everyone found the declarations segment of combat a little hard to grasp at first. They were used to saying what they were going to do when they were going to do it, though it does make combat gameplay flow a lot differently and gives a real advantage to the winner of initiative.

If there was a place to post it on this website, I'd move a copy of the journal here.

We had a system where the lowest initiative declared first, up to the winner of initiative. This allowed the winner to "see" what was happening. We found it cumbersome with 5 players at the table ( and hard for them to grasp )

The newest (and a short) rpg journal for the GURPS game I'm playing in. It takes place in 1890 and my character (Captain Oliver Kirkpatrick) is investigating a mysterious airship that was captured and then lost by the U.S. Navy.  It can be found in my facebook notes or here:

Ya know, your mention of 1890 got me thinking about a 10 scenario war game campaign book I picked up a year ago. Colonial Campaigns - Ethiopia 1887 - 1895 by Mark Fastoso

It chronicls the Italian/Ethiopian campaign that culminated in the Battle of Adowa where a European power had a massive can of woop but openned up on them by an african warlord and it totally ended any attempt by Italy to amass a colonial empire in africa.

I was thinking that the campaign book (and others by that publisher ) would be a good basis for an RPG campaign.
Though with the Ethiopian one only 8 of the scenarios are Italians Vs Abysinnians while the other two involve the Madist (one vs the Abyssinians and one vs the Italians) Players could play the parts of Italians, Native askari, and mercenary adventurers with the Italian army. or they can play Abyssinians. The Dogali Massacare could be tricky in that a supply column was historically massacured- unless the players are the ones sent out on patrol to see whats happened to the missing supply train. Of course the climax is the Battle of Adowa and the Italians get corn cobed in that one (though not everyone is killed) but then it might be fun to play out the Italian colonial version of Custer's last stand.

edit: here's a link to the specific product I was refering too. I also have the Boxer Rebellion campaign book and The Rise of the Mahdi campaign book. Either one would also work as a ladder for a history based RPG plus with the Boxer Rebellion you could rent 55 days to Peking starring Charelton Heston for Saturday night research.

I finished the write up for the Megatraveller and Adventures in the New World GURPS games this weekend and have posted them in my facebook notes and here:

http://blog.myspace.com/max_writer

The GURPS game is  before the Megatraveller game (as that game came first) so I apologize for any confusion. There are several entries for each on MySpace and a single one for New World and two for Megatraveller on FaceBook.

Thanks guys. It was funny how the guy playing the pilot was convinced that it wasn't Goldwyn - to the point of not even bothering to search his room when he was supposed to. People kept wanting some kind of "lie detection" skill by mid-game and comments were made that "He was some actor" to which I said "Yeah, he's been trained for this kind of thing."

I don't know if you can open the facebook link unless you are my friends on Facebook but here is the link to my notes - I just made them public. Let me know if you can read them. You should be able to:

Eric ran his GURPs game (Adventures in the New World - 1890s) Sunday. The journal entry can be found in my Facebook notes or here:

http://blog.myspace.com/max_writer

Characters are:

Captain Oliver Kirkpatrick, U.S. Navy

Tom Binford

Miranda Alders

Nellie Bly

Lilian Whitlock

Finally, a head's up.  I'm supposed to run the conclusion of the Aliens Adventure Game I ran a couple of months ago. The squad of undercover marines on the derelict ship are in great danger. Will they survive?
