jedion357 September 19, 2022 - 5:20am | At Shire Con i played in a Swords and Wizardry Light game. S&W is a 1e clone. S&W is a four page "light" version of the game. 2 pages are for the player. The character sheets were 8.5 x 5.5, class specific to 1 of four classes and with the 2 pages for the player it was all you needed to create a character. You could be any of the classic races dwarf, elf, halfly, human. Normally I would expect that pregens would be provided at a con but we rolled up characters in approximately 10 minutes and were playing. Except for one individual which brought their character that they used at a previous Con with this game master. Despite it being "light" I thought it was perfect for a convention game. There is no way you would do that with Star Frontiers at a convention Rolling up characters for 8 people would take at least an hour. Features of S&W light were no alignments, no EXP. I did not even miss playing without an alignment. Instead of EXP there were check boxes for adventrues and every 2 or 3 adventures you advance in level. It was very stripped down. it got me thinking that a Star Frontiers Light rule set of 4 pages stripped down to the essentials to play would be perfect for a con game. Character sheets that are PSA specific - Military, Tech, Science, Mentalist. Maybe spacer depends on how we strip this down. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |

jedion357 September 19, 2022 - 5:50am | While driving back from CT I considered just using the Basic rules but I feel I'd rathter preserve the skill system. Was tempted to just do PSAs as the choice and you can do everything within that psa but again I don't feel this is the right path. I am thinking that Species specific skills ie Yaz battle rage, Dralasite lie detection etc should be done as a skill 10%/level + 1/2 ability score. This means out of the gate players will be using the species abilities without it being a joke at 5% ( Remember the idea here is that this is a stripped down rule set for use at a convention). It is then treated as a In PSA skill to improve. Lie detection tests with LOG, Battle rage with PER and Comprehension with INT. Unified Field Theory- all defensive screens work the exact same way 1 SEU to ablate 5 pts of damage from the appropriate damage type Holo screen obviously works differently Unified ranges- I think that the range bans are really about a character's ability to see, aim and shoot; not about the capability of the weapon so what if all ranges werre the same? PB is 0-2 meters for all weapons, short is w-x, medium is y-z, long range is beyond medium and a weapon simply has a max range stat. There has been almost no shooting at long range in any of my games over the last 2 years and most combats are point blank to short. strip down the combat modifiers for shooting and mele- there are a lot of them and most people ignore half of them until they are looking for an advantage and invoke defending or careful aim. Players want to fly the millenium falcon so spacer skills have to be dumbed down. no high prerequisites. I'm currently uisng the Spacer Skills revisited rules from SFMAn #10 or 11 but only for gaining a 1st level skill - after that no progressive prerequisites just advance the spacer skill as you like. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
jedion357 September 19, 2022 - 5:54am | And since were discussing Convention games- the game master of my game would pull a player aside to tell them what a magic item did. I have a better idea. In the past I was giving a deck of magic items and i kind of thought is was of little use to me. But at a con game if you had said deck of magic items I would just hand out the card. to the player and move on with the game. No five minute slow downs. Star Frontiers doesn't have "magic items" per se but you can do this with an index card and loot item discovered or special weapon etc. just hand them out. and keep the game moving. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
jedion357 September 19, 2022 - 6:09am | I'm envisioning a front and back one page (8.5x11) of stripped down rules for the player stripped down simplified Character creation PS is included here instead of something you have to search the book for One paragraph to sum up a species and then their ability mods and racial abilities, their movement combat modifiers cut down by half for melee and shooting Skill checks are a straight 10%/level + 1/2ability score Subskills might have a bonus or negative in their description to account for some things being easier or harder Character sheets Sub skill actions on the back of the character sheet. Not a full description but just a quick reference S&W Light used equipment packages where you chose one of two. We have the standard equipment pack of the basic game that can be automatic and then a choice of one of two equipment options. weapons and defenses are issued per the scenario or game master I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |

Have you seen the Basic Plus project? Been a while since i looked at it. the thing is, as I remember is, the basic game lacks skills? and I want to approximate a full SF game experience. However you do ask a good question and I should probably take a second look at the Basic Plus project I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |

Canon Basic lacks skills. Basic Plus doesn't have skills per se, although it does introduce Primary Skill Areas which allow bonuses to the particular actions in that field. |
