Anonymous December 14, 2009 - 8:45am | parriah submitted a very cool article he wrote based off the "Yacht and
Privateers" article in Dragon #88. It inspired me to start a project I've had on the back
burner -- remastering past articles that appeared in Ares, Dragon,
Imagine and Polyhedron. My initial thought was to submit them to the webzine. When their all complete I can provide a single PDF download of all articles. What do you all think? Yacht and Privateers is finished Any help would be appreciated. :-) |
jedion357 December 14, 2009 - 11:18pm | Great Idea but I imagine that it would be quite big, just the dragon articles ammount to a subancial amout then throw in the Polyhedron (I have a few) plus ares and imagine, of which I haven't obtained any (ebay is such a fickle beast). That would make a great PDF though. Call it: Woot's Guide to the SF Universe. I have a Dragon Article archive I downloaded from somewhere but it doesn't have any of the art work so a remaster document with all the old artwork plus some new would be very well recieved. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
w00t (not verified) December 15, 2009 - 7:19am | There are 42 articles including 5 Star Questions articles and 2 Sage Advice. If we do one per Issue that will last us until #56. Heh! I'll combine the Star Questions and articles that are like themed (Star Law, Tanks A Lot!). Oh ya. It's all coming together. |
jedion357 December 15, 2009 - 8:28am | I see now sort of a regular feature. Do you have a count on the Polyhedron, Ares and Imagine articles? More importantly do you have a master list of the issues with articles so that this dral can continue collecting the ultimate Star Frontiers collection? Are there guidelines and rules on doing a remastered article? Just in case in the endless hours I have I get bored and decide to work on one of the polyhedron articles I have. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |

On my copy I numbered each page and made a TOC on the front. :-) Are there guidelines and rules on doing a remastered article? Just in case in the endless hours I have I get bored and decide to work on one of the polyhedron articles I have. I was going through each myself, adding notes, suggestions and (if time) playtest some of the ideas. We could start a project where interested parties are assigned an article, run with it and post back results for discussion. Some articles like, "Yachts and Privateers Return" I simply typed it up as is. Thoughts? |

My understanding was that we couldn't post straight copies of the original material but if it was "remastered" then it was ok. I was just wondering what the requirements for remastering were? Also I think open rpg on a Friday night might be a good test bed for play testing. Some article you can't really play test but open RPG would be a good platform to discuss and pick apart an article (or even just the chat function this site if it was less of something you'd play test) and that could lead to new ideas and even page of new material suggesting alternate endings, strategies, or whatever based off the "playtesting". This will of course mean that a remaster Dragon article will not come as a surprise when the issue comes out but the conclusions section would. Remastering is the original material re-typed and formated. Since these are going in SFman the articles should be done in .doc or .rtf format, have no special formatting: using only simple tables and headings of levels 1, 2, or 3, and should be double-spaced. Open RPG is a good idea. +1 |
jacobsar December 15, 2009 - 4:57pm | I have PDF files of all Dragon Mags from 1 to 250. This includes all graphics (including advertizments, if your realy interested) Would that help? w00t (not verified) December 15, 2009 - 5:47pm | Yes, that would help (to compare to mine). Were only interested (at this time) in Star Frontiers, Knight Hawks articles, Star Questions and Sage Advice. I have an 8MB PDF that (I believe ) contains all the Sf articles published but I have nothing to come too. |
jacobsar December 15, 2009 - 6:55pm | Ok, Give me a day to search for all of the articles. I already have all of the Ares sections bookmarked, so that will cut down on some of the time. I have been a member of this forum for a while, but have been away from it since 2008. So this is realy my first time posting anything. Might be amaturish to begin with. jacobsar December 16, 2009 - 8:15pm | I have found Articles from as early as issue 65 and as late as 149. I am in the process of cutting and pasting the relevant articles/graphics. More to come. Since Gama World has been remastered do you think I should give those articles the same treatment? Reasonable men adapt to the world around them; unreasonable men make the world adapt to them. w00t (not verified) December 16, 2009 - 8:53pm | Ohhh that would be (Bill and Ted voice) Excellent! :-) |
jacobsar December 19, 2009 - 8:46am | A have started the process of Getting the articles into .Doc format. Since GammaWorld Predates SF the first files are primarily that. I am uploading them as Word files for now. Its a start. The word files include graphics that I believe are important to to the article. The largest stumbling block currently is the format of tables. The OCR used is having difficulty with the various different styles of tables in Dragon, especialy in the earlier issues where much of the typeface was actualy typed, like on a type writer. jacobsar December 19, 2009 - 4:57pm | Update: I have completed My search for GAMMAWorld Articles. They are now contained on 3 files totaling about 10,000Kb. It will probably need some scrubbing as the OCR software did some odd things to the fomating. I had to be creative with the cut/paste process. Where should I post it? Cant wait to see it. No clue where to post it at though. I dont know if the Project section can hold it. Time flies when your having rum. Im a government employee, I dont goof-off. jedion357 December 19, 2009 - 11:06pm | No clue where to post it at though. I dont know if the Project section can hold it. for want of somewhere better you could put it in the Port Loren Public Library Project I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
w00t (not verified) December 20, 2009 - 1:00pm | 10MB - you'll have to mail it to me. Or break it down into smaller chunks. The files and discussion should go in the Digitally Remastered project. I like Jedi's idea about adding comentary and content to the articles. Once the articles are posted in the project we can pick one to discuss - then submit it to the webzine. (I'll come up with a special format so it's clear was is the original text and what has been added. ) Sound good? @Jedi, you can hot-link the content from one project to another. User the following code (remove the spaces) < <node, xxxx> > where xxxx is the node number. For example the node number for this topic is 3837. |

jacobsar December 29, 2009 - 8:06pm | OK guys, Your Christmas present from me is under the tree at the Port Loren Public Library. I thought since the data is still raw (and The files still very large) it belonged in there. We could bring the data over to Digitaly remastered project acrticle by article. My submitions are as follows: Alternate Frontiers, SF Archive 1-100, and SF Archive 100-150. The smallest file is Alternate Frontiers, so this whould probably make the best starting point. It is the newest of the articles and has convertions from the SF to Alternity game systems. It even reveals the names of the homeworlds of some of the core four (Gasp!) Jedi, you might like to use this article to flesh out the "book of lost homeworlds" idea. Reasonable men adapt to the world around them; unreasonable men make the world adapt to them.
