Shadow Shack September 21, 2009 - 6:05am | I'm really itching for some live play SF (D&D with the wife is fine, but she is no longer a fan of SF and I'm really jonesing). I participated in some live D&D via OpenRPG but I have no idea how to host such a game. I've done several trial solo runs but just can't seem to figure out how to open a room (and keep it open) let alone load maps. Anyone know anything about that? |
Georgie September 27, 2009 - 8:09am | We also talked about using Skype. That might be faster than having everyone type. I've played DnD over Skype (and MSN and AIM using voice) and the quality was hit and miss despite high speed connnections on both ends. The more that joined, to poorer the quality became. Although some experienced better quality then others. When everyone was talking at once, it became impossible to know what was going one. The DM spent almost as much time telling people to shut up as he did running the game. (This was almost two years ago, maybe its gotten better? That particular group was an unruly bunch too anyway, so that might have had an impact as well.) It would be sweet if the GM can mute the others and then unmute the person who's turn it is. jedion357 September 29, 2009 - 6:16am | Or use the chat window to 'raise your hand'. Sister Dorothy, can I go to the bathroom? lol seriously I was promoting open rpg to the guys I play D&D (for nights when we cancel cause of weather or sick kids) and one suggested we download RogerWillco (like team speak) as he uses it with his guild on World of Warcraft. His concern was that he doesn't type fast. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
w00t (not verified) September 29, 2009 - 8:11am | I'm still working up the Live Play details but wanted to jump in here and suggest Skype (although I'm used to Paltalk - which is basically Instant Messaging Voice. It's made to hold conf calls where the room leader can give you the mic or take it). Team Speak and the like are more geared towards team combat where everyone can talk as I understand it. TerlObar suggested Skype for the podcast. I allows 200 ppl to attend a conf call and the room leader can give mic. We can record parts of these session for the podcast. That's the way I'm leaning, Skpe. A tool we can use for all things SF'y. ;-) I have started a list of Requirements For Live Play. I think were all settled on openRPG as the medium for maps, chat, charactersheets, etc... but the question is; Do we want to use Voice as well? Should we put it to a vote? After the vote should we vote on which software to use? Not sure... |
umungus September 29, 2009 - 1:20pm | I'm in... just let me know if I need to get a microphone or whatever.. At least I got to scare an alien rabbit thingy...... |

TerlObar September 29, 2009 - 7:09pm | We could, if they support conference calls. I think the suggestion for skype is simply that we know it will support the functionality we want. It really doesn't matter to me. In fact the voice connection isn't really needed but I think would make the sessions move quicker. Personally, I don't have any of the ones you mentioned on my current system (at least that I know about or use) although I have no problem installing something. Ad Astra Per Ardua! w00t (not verified) September 29, 2009 - 8:22pm | I would not assume everyone has popular IM clients. I'm also not familiar with those programs; do they offer Conference Chat and Mic management? I understand it may require installing more software. 1. We have not decided if there will be Voice Play. (IMO it's up to whoever is GM'ing the game) 2. The GM might have his/her own voice software requirements. 3. We need a standard. "To Live Play Star Frontiers Online you need the following..." |
Ascent September 30, 2009 - 6:30am | It sounds like the specialized programs have features necessary to voice play that the IM programs can't do. It might be able to conference, but it doesn't have management features or any other feature that might be needed other than private messages. TerlObar October 8, 2009 - 8:38pm | Anyone up for a live KH battle tomorrow (Fri, Oct 9th - probably today by the time most of you read this)? I was thinking we could play the Dramune War encounter from the Dramune Run module. The UPF and Inner Reach Militia against the Outer Reach Militia and some Pirates. There are plenty of ships so we can handle lots of players. I have all the KH counters ready. OpenRPG, no voice just text chat and the map. I figure we'd start a little after 8pm Mountain Daylight time (after I get my younger kids in bed ). Or later if the west coast guys need more time. We'll use the Roleplay Refugees server and I'll create a Dramune War room at about 7:45. Anyone interested? Ad Astra Per Ardua! Shadow Shack October 8, 2009 - 8:54pm | Dang, I work tomorrow night. IF you schedule it for next Friday, I'm off...and no doubt that'll give time for others to confirm participation. P.S. RR was the server we used for the D&D game I played at OR |
Ascent October 8, 2009 - 9:15pm | Yeah, it's best to reserve play session at least a week in advance. If you plan on it being weekly then state it when announcing the first game. w00t (not verified) October 8, 2009 - 9:35pm | I'm pretty sure I can make it. I'll be online tomrrow. |
TerlObar October 9, 2009 - 12:38pm | Yeah, I know it's short notice and I don't expect a lot of people can show up but I thought I'd kick things off and see what happens. If nothing else, larry and I can test out stuff and come up with more ideas. Ad Astra Per Ardua! w00t (not verified) October 28, 2009 - 7:26am | Anyone using Google Wave? Here is a post about waves and RPG's. Interesting but not sure if it's tailored for our type of games. |
Oghma October 28, 2009 - 3:04pm | My wife and I are interested in paying on Friday nights occasionally. We haven't played any RPG in years and this sounds really fun. |
TerlObar October 28, 2009 - 5:12pm | I can't make it this Friday but why don't we shoot for a session next friday (Nov 6th). Who's game? Ad Astra Per Ardua! w00t (not verified) October 28, 2009 - 8:18pm | I can Ref or Play this Friday or next. We should give Shadow's Raider's of Port Loren a whirl. |
Ascent October 28, 2009 - 10:03pm | By the way, no one has stated the live play details. I keep hearing a bout "there's a game tonight", or there's a game on friday... can i get a statement about when regular games take place, what day, what time, so I can schedule around them? I would very much appreciate it. Don't give me jazz about "oh it's up in the air, we'll let you know." I can't plan around "we'll let you know." I need the schedule for the game and what software I need besides OpenRPG (mine is loaded and ready to go).. View my profile for a list of articles I have written, am writing, will write. Right now there isn't anything official - it's just whenever someone posts "hey let's play". I'm still working on a guideline as stated below in my posts. If you would like to "test" openRPG I can meet just about any time. Hopefully this week I can review SS's adventure and run it soon. How should we announce games? The following are Star Frontier sites; sf.us sf.org sf.info SF-Un Post announcements on the front page of this site as well as SF-Un? |
TerlObar October 29, 2009 - 8:49am | Ascent, as far as I know there aren't any game details yet. Ohgma said he and his wife would be interested in playing on Fridays occasionally, I said I'd be available next Friday and w00t said he'd be available this friday or next. That's as far as it has gone. I think we're shooting for a session on the 6th as this point (at least I am). There is nothing offically (or regularly) planned yet but if w00t and I can make it there will be a session of some sort. If enough people respond with interest we'll set something official up. I nominate w00t to run the game since he volunteered but I could run something as well. My plan was to wait until Monday to see what the interest was and declare a go/no go for that Friday. The only other software I'd recommend is Skype (www.skype.com). This is something Larry and I have been kicking around as it would provide the option to do this via voice and use openRPG as the tabletop. It's basically telephony over the internet and free for Skype to Skype calls. With Skype you can conference call a whole group into the same call. If everyone has we, the GM can initiate a call to everyone and we can all talk to play instead of having to type into the OpenRPG chat window. There is probably other software out there that does the same thing but that's just the one I'm familiar with. So, if you can make it Friday, Nov 6th, with you, me and w00t we'll declare it offical and set somthing up. The real trick is time zones. The absolute soonest I could be available is 9pm Eastern time (6 local for me). Something to discuss. Ad Astra Per Ardua! umungus October 29, 2009 - 11:17am | I'd be interested in playing too. If we use skype, I suppose I need a microphome. What type should I get? At least I got to scare an alien rabbit thingy...... |
Georgie October 29, 2009 - 5:00pm | @umungus: I recommend a headset style. Using a table-top mic and speakers leads to occasional feedback - not pleasant (just ask anyone I've played Skype D&D with ). I'm interested in playing as well. For scheduling's sake, let's follow Terl's lead, Friday the 6th at 9ET, 8CT, 7MT, 6PT (even though it means I'll have to record Stargate Universe). Terl and w00t need to draw straws for who's running the show, and should do it soon so character requirements can be posted (if we have to make characters Friday night, I'll be asleep before play starts!). Also, which rule set and initial house rules should also be posted before hand as well. All participants will have to keep in mind that this first game will be as much about working out the mechanics of this style of gaming as it is about playing. Set your expectations accordingly. ;) The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of

umungus October 29, 2009 - 5:57pm | Thanks Georgie. I guess, as you say, the next thing is what type of chracters do we make? At least I got to scare an alien rabbit thingy...... |
w00t (not verified) October 29, 2009 - 6:00pm | Terl and w00t need to draw straws for who's running the show, and should do it soon so character requirements can be posted I say 'respect your elders'. Terl the balls in your racket. It's the old man Terl show! hehe |
TerlObar October 29, 2009 - 6:21pm | It's the old man Terl show! hehe Sounds like we have a quorum. I'm a much better player than Referee but if Larry doesn't want to do it I will. Let's do simple expanded rules AD characters (core four), simple to generate and everyones familiar with them. Somewhere I posted a character sheet for OpenRPG. I'll double check it and post it again with installation instructions. Then you can fill out all your chararcters info and have it online in the game. An preferences on setting, style or content? I'll try to dream up something regardless but I'm open to suggestions. Ad Astra Per Ardua! Ascent October 30, 2009 - 11:44pm | I'm in for Friday, the 6th, 9pm Eastern. I may need a reminder, but I can now leave the time open for the game. Georgie October 31, 2009 - 3:49pm | I have 1.7.3. I'm going to download 1.8 today and see how to do it there. I'm sure the functionality exists, it's just a matter of finding out what it is called in the menu. I had to hunt a bit last night to figure it out in 1.7.3. So... just to be perfectly clear... we should use OpenRPG version 1.8? The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of

Oghma November 1, 2009 - 1:18pm | Just DL'd open RPG 1.08 and updated to 1.08.04 (or something like that) I'm sure my wife won't want to stay up that late but I can probably help figure some things out. Will we be making characters, or using some premade ones? |
