Where Is Everyone?

I'm not posting this as a member of the "Alpha Team", or attempting to drum up more traffic as Bill's friend.  I'm just posting this as me, and I'm wondering...

...where the heck is everybody?

Is there a bunch of activity going on in the projects that I'm just not seeing?  This site looks like it's on life support, with a few dedicated people (Thanks, guys!  Please, keep up the love!) talking and hundreds of people with nothing to say or do.  Bill himself is missing, and hasn't even bothered to drop us a line just to let us know he's still alive.  My love for Star Frontiers has gone back into the dusty old box in my mental closet and I've pretty much moved on.

I agree that smaller more frequent issues would be better. Who cares if they are only 20-30 pages long?  Just for fun here is the publication history of the StarFrontiersman as a function of time giving the page count of each issue.

It has been continually growing.  If we capped the page count at 25-30 pages you could probably get an issue out every 6 weeks at the current submission rate.  If that started happening you'd probabaly get more submissions as well and build up that back log.

I also agree. We should have a much shorter Frontiersman come out more often.

I pop in and out of here at all kinds of odd hours, and I have not seen him at all for quite a while now.  He is likely tied up with something that keeps him from even bothering with the sites.  I have not tried sending an email lately though.

I'm sorry everyone... I know I've been away.  I've been quite busy with  my new career and with family needs.

I began all this when I had a lot more time on my hands.

I will make an effort to spend more time on these forums.

Hey all,

I mostly just lurk, but I did contribute to the Compendium of Creatures.  However, even that contribution was some time ago.  It's just hard to keep the excitement going because I rarely get a chance to use any of the great material floating around on this site.  I agree with you guys that gaming is the key to maintaining interest.  I absolutely love SF, but it's hard to get a gaming group of adults together.  And when you don't game, you can't ever implement all those ideas you've been tossing around.

Another thought I had relates to deadlines.  I can't speak for anyone else, but I have a hard time accomplishing anything in a reasonable time frame unless I have a deadline looming (or leering ;) over my head.  The micro-Frontiersman would help with that problem as well.  If we had a cutoff date for publication each month, it might make people get busy on their pet projects.  I realize you can't really enforce a deadline on open-ended volunteer work, but it might give some folks an incentive to finish their stuff if they have some kind of a timetable to work with.

I, Mr. Axle, BOING, can do all for you.

Deadlines: if it weren't for the last minute I'd never get anything done.

I'm throwing the gauntlet down, the war against procrastination starts...tomorrow.

Just a bit of deadbeat deadpan humor there --- don't mind me I've been up all weekend. No sweat Bill, stuff happens. Glad to see new faces and old alike. From the guy that changes his avatar at random intervals...

Howdy Bill,
Glad to see you're still alive, now where's my Frontiersman? :D

Yes, welcome back Bill.  We were about to send a Star Law posse to look for youTongue out.

This should probabaly go into one of the StarFrontiersman threads but since I'm responding to a comment made here ...

I agree with Axle on the deadline idea.  I don't know how much time it takes to turn around the submissions and get them formatted but if you set a deadline of the 15th for publication on the 1st of the following month it might help.  And then just put out whatever was submitted.  If it is only 20 pages long, so what?  Issue 1 was only 18 pages including the cover and the index and it was fine.  I think the consensus has been that we'd prefer to see frequent, small issues over spradic larger ones.  I also think if you just start putting them out regularly (I'd go with bi-monthly to start) things will pick up.  I'm also stll willing to help.

Another thing that might be worth doing is making a page showing what has been submitted and desired contributions so people can sort of see the queue and what is happening.  Visibility always provides motivation, both for the producers and the editors Smile.  I believe there is already enough material for a small issue.  Shadow Shack has produced three items just in the last couple of weeks.  I submitted the Jump Tug a while back and I believe there have been a few other submissions.  If not, a deadline with an expected release date might just get them in.

As for future submissions, I know I have two other ships almost ready to go (deck plans are done, I just need to do a write up) and a few other things that I'll be submitting.  I just have to wait until they show up in the campaign I'll be starting within the next couple of weeks.  I don't want to spoil it for the characters.  I had actually hoped to kick the campaign off today but there have been some technical dificulties (and I was hoping the next StarFrontiersman would be out since the job ad for the characters is a classified ad in the back of this issueSmile).

I have an article I would like to submit for the next Frontiersman. I have kept working on it just because I haven't heard anything about a deadline. Always more polishing to do. If I get an idea when SF9 will be put together I will submit it.

At least I got to scare an alien rabbit thingy......
