w00t (not verified) February 18, 2008 - 8:40pm | I guess but I wonder if the smaller ships could be reinforced to take the stress of the bigger engines? What would you use bigger engines for? You might gain ADF but MR could be hindered with more mass. (Just an observation, w00t is not a KH dude). |
Corjay (not verified) February 18, 2008 - 9:13pm | I think it's a matter of the structure strength of the mounts, as well as the space for resources inside the vehicle itself. Larger engines require greater internal maintenance and thus a larger crew and bigger and more equipment. |
Colt45 February 20, 2008 - 4:14pm | what if it gave the ship a +2 to ADF and a -1 to MR? You could allways give the ship a reinforced hull and get a bunch of maintanance robots to keep it up. Could a ship with bigger engines fire more weapons because the engines would be more powerful? (if the weapons fit inside of course!) (insert sarcastic comeback here) |
Corjay (not verified) February 20, 2008 - 4:35pm | Correct me if I'm wrong, but in Star Frontiers, I believe beam weapon systems and engines to be entirely unrelated. That is, in Star Trek, the weapons use the same source of energy as the engines. But in Star Frontiers, a ship with rocket engines have just as effective weapons as ships with atomic engines, and we know that rocket engines can't generate the power to fire those weapons. |
w00t (not verified) February 20, 2008 - 7:58pm | Corjay has a good point. I'm not aware of rules that state what weapons are used by what engines. Weapons are more todo with programs and function points. go go gadget super engine! |
Rum Rogue February 20, 2008 - 9:59pm | without pulling out my books, I think there is a brief passage stating that the engines provide power for the ship, but never spell it out. Colt45, I have wondered about the engines as well. Thought about one class B replacing 2 class A's. Never really worked anything out. Time flies when your having rum. Im a government employee, I dont goof-off. I constructively abuse my time. |
Corjay (not verified) February 20, 2008 - 10:15pm | I believe its the batteries that power the computers and life support system. I'm not sure about the weapons, though. It's something that never really crossed my mind until now. |
Rum Rogue February 20, 2008 - 10:31pm | Arent there a couple of deckplans from adventures that show a large parabattery? I think the ship in Dramune Run has that. Time flies when your having rum. Im a government employee, I dont goof-off. I constructively abuse my time. |
Colt45 February 22, 2008 - 8:32am | In my campaign I have the weapons, defences, everything powered by the ships engines. (Unless it has chemical engines then it has a huge generator) that's how I explain the modifiers to ADF and MR:the engines power the weapons instead of making the ship go super fast. But that's just me... Here's another question: could you mount more-that the normal maximum of engines? The maximum engine rule never made much sense to me, Why does it take 3 engines to give a HS5 freighter an ADF of 3 while it takes only 2 to make a HS 7 freighter have the same speed?(they both use the same size engines!!) (insert sarcastic comeback here) |
Will February 22, 2008 - 10:30am | Same here, Colt, engines to power the ship's systems, parabatteries and power jennies for secondary power. Rummie, the deckplans of the Gullwind in SFKH1: The Dramune Run, show a collection of parabatteries used for secondary power. "You're everything that's base in humanity," Cochrane continued. "Drawing up strict, senseless rules for the sole reason of putting you at the top and excluding anyone you say doesn't belong or fit in, for no other reason than just because you say so." —Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stephens, Federation |
