Ok, I've read some forum posts and checked out the site, now I'm thinking of joining a project or two to get involved, but I want to see if there's a process involved. Do I just join the project(s) that sound interesting and say hello? Or contact a project member first? or ...? Don't want to step on any toes.

Just join. There's a button on the Front Page of each project that let's you request membership. If the access requires approval, the project manager may contact you. The process is automated, so there's nothing to worry about. Glad to have your participation. That's what this site is all about: collaboration.

If the project is marked as being open for anyone to join, hop right in -- just hit Request Membership and you're in.  If it's marked that you need to request membership, the Request Membership button will send a request to the project leader.  So don't be afraid of stepping on any toes (paws?  I love Spaceballs!) and dive right in!

Ok, cool. I figured it was just a matter of joining, seeing what is being worked, and getting to work. Didn't want to get off to a bad start though.

I'm off to the projects list now!

Many projects you can contribute to even without membership.  In fact, the forums in each project are unrestricted in this way.  I personally prefer open collaboration - but some of the testers pressured me into making lots of security settings for varied types of projects.  Don't be afraid to add your opinions and observations and talents - it's all good.

The best part about membership is when you go to your "What's New" you'll get to see what's new in all the projects you're a member of.  Very helpful navigation!

Yeah, as can be seen on AER, Delta Dawn, and Gamma Dawn, I prefer that just one person edit the documents, but everyone that's a member can discuss those things, and when we decide on something, I can put it into the book. However, if no one participates, I'm not going to wait 2 months for any approvals, so if anyone wants their word or ideas to get into any of these projects, speak now, or don't complain when they're finished. They're project member-view only, because I want them to be surprises to most players when they're finished. Remember, just because you can't edit a document yourself, doesn't mean you can't discuss that project and influence the "editor's" work. That's how I consider the manager is as an editor. I accept full write-ups and give full credit if anyone wants to submit anything to my projects. Anything I don't have to work on is good news to me.
