SP & SE Notes on TSL: Technoligcal Social Levels....

TSL or Technical Social Level

 

Star Probe and Star Empires use Technical Social Levels to help determine technology of a society, government types available to a society, weapons available to a society, and trade profits.

 

Traveler was published in 1977 and also used a similiar concept called Technology Level and as it was in print longer it generaly gets credit for the concept of Technolical Trees and Levels but Star Probe was published in 1975 using the concept 2 years earlier. GURPS also has incorporated this concept as well. 


TSL differences also matter in battles pg 12


Home System and other system war ships are available at TSL 

TSL 7 Jump ability 15 light years

TSL 6 ships can't jump

TSL 8 ships can jump 25 ly

 

TSL runs from 1 through 8 in Star Probe. TSL 7 and TSL 8 cultures will control their Home System and 1 to 6 other systems. TSL is also used to determine trade profits pg 


TSL 7 Computers use big tapes implied from pg 24

TSL 7 Beam weapons available

TSL 6 missiles are available


TSL combat pg 27-28

Determines number of space ships another culture has to attack with.


Star Empires use a TSL 1 through 8, same 1-6 planets + home world for 7 & 8 levels. TSL effects Tariff Revenue aka trade, home system starts at 7, forces available (ground, and space) are determined by TSL. Draft of forces is determined by TSL. Number of ports is determinded by TSL,

TSL 5+ Battlewagon, Assault, Pursuit, Merchant

TSL 4+ Ship Yards

 

TSL can be improved past 8 (9-55+)

I got more notes to add but in looking at the systems of Traveler and GURPS I think reorganizing this would be helpful. Maybe something along these lines... 

TSL Energy Computer/Robotics Communications Medical Environment

I will have to fiddle with this as TSL 4 is deffinetly the Atomic Age in this game and I have a lot more notes from SE to add.

Looking at TSL charts Colonization of space can start as early as TSL 4-5.

TSL 1 = Stone Age
TSL 2 = Metal Age but no firearms (Bronze-Iron)

TSL 1 = Stone Age, raft, canoes, walking, dog sleds, Stone through Copper Age 

TSL 2 = Metal Age but no firearms (Bronze-Iron), Catapults, crossbows, row boats, crude sailing vessels, chariots, wagons, armor, water & wind power... Bronze age through Middle Ages (3300 BC-1300 AD)

TSL 3 = muskets, cannons, multi-mast ships, coaches, hot air balloons, Steam Power... Renaissance (1400-1700) 

TSL 4 = Rifle & Atomic, aerial combat (planes) , conventional warfare WWI-WWII, Combustable Engine to Nuclear power (1800-2000+)

These are much bigger Tech Levels than GURPs uses I think.
