jedion357 September 6, 2017 - 3:01pm | Page 60 of the rule book: Racial Reaction Modifiers table Anyone else notice something interesting about this table? if this has been discussed and I missed the discussion please forgive my ignorance. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
TerlObar September 6, 2017 - 4:01pm | It's not symmetric? I don't remember it ever being discussed before. What was the "something interesting" you noticed? Ad Astra Per Ardua! Shadow Shack September 6, 2017 - 7:34pm | Anyone else notice something interesting about this table? After that, Yazirians dislike Dralasites to the same degree that Sathar & Vrusk dislike each other. |
jedion357 September 7, 2017 - 6:45am | Yes, Sathar as a PC race. Although, in Zeb Cooks original work they were a PC race but later became the implacable enemy Ie. the Borg of Star Frontiers. This table may be a remnenant of Zeb and Lawrence's work after Alien Worlds was taken from them and reworked by commitee to be Star Frontiers. Of course the numbers for reactions to sathar are highly prejudicial so no doubt those are changed. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Stormcrow September 7, 2017 - 1:17pm | Notice the ordering of the races, and notice the Sathar's hugely negative modifiers. The order starts with Humans, because we're Humans and that's the default from which all other races are defined. Then the other friendly races are in alphabetical order. Then Sathar are at the bottom of the list, not in alphabetical order with the others. They're put there because they're not grouped with the others. These things tell me that the Racial Reaction Modifiers table was written, or at least revised, after the Sathar became the enemy NPC race. It's just the phrase "Player Character Race" that's wrong. That might be because the table existed while the Sathar were still a PC race and they just missed it, or it might be because the table was really for PCs and they stuck Sathar on the end because they realized they should, recognizing that, "Okay, Sathar aren't actually player characters, but that's not really important. It's not like thirty-five years later someone is going to point this out and misunderstand the point, right?" |
Tchklinxa September 13, 2017 - 7:18pm | Well I have been considering an all Sathar adventure. PCs play the Sathar... just an idea I keep coming back to. "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |

Tchklinxa September 14, 2017 - 7:08pm | Well I am kicking the allies around too... SF from the baddies point of view... of course their point of view is they are the good guys. The Sathar's allies would have their own agendas too but there would be plenty of reasons for them to interact and cooperate towards common goals... and it could be a reboot so to speak as really it could start anywhere in the timeline. TSR ended up doing the creepy evil bad guys versus colony good guys cliche, but it never felt 100% correct to me. So as I have been DMing most recently, I should pull my SF stuff out refresh my brain a bit and come up with a basic adventure... all we see of the Sathar is their military, but there has got to much more and a motivation behind their actions and even choices of species as allies. I am thinking right this second maybe a joint species colony planet someplace off the SF map might be a good starting idea, than at least two species for people to play... there must be something of mutual interest of course for the first adventure hook. From there maybe aspects of traditional SF timeline can be added. The bio form and cyber aspects of Sathar tech I think would be a hoot to see in other aspects too. Just spit balling right now... but it would be fun to explore the "bad guys" from a PC angle I think. "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
Shadow Shack September 15, 2017 - 6:57am | It's a great twist and I would love to partake in it. I penned & GM'd a reverse-Volturnus trilgoy game where the players were recruited as members of the Star Devil after being turned down for the expedition that would have otherwise started the game as written, so it's right up my ally. |
