Which Space Ship Would You Choose?

For whatever purpose you see fit (exploration, combat, point A to point B transport, profit, etc), what ship would you choose for your very own from cinema, televison, and/or literature? From the SF game or any other RPG (Traveller etc)? And for each of those choices, why?
_____________________________________________________________

My answer for the Cinematic/etc question would be a CEC YT-1300 (the ship model that the Millennium Falcon was based on). Small, quick, and agile along with atmospheric capabilities and a fair offense/defense system not to mention a minimal crew to operate; this makes for a fine "does everything well" transport.

Naturally I'll take the trim with the flame licks on the mandibles. Cool

From gaming it would be a demilitarized UPF assault scout or, if possible, the military version...as long as it would be equipped with something resembling a hold in either trim. Even a re-titled pirate scout would do. In the absence of a military version, ultimately I would want my RT-3100 Merchant Scout variant. No matter what trim it is though, it would be small, quick, and agile along with atmospheric capabilities and a fair offense/defense system not to mention a minimal crew to operate; this makes for a fine "does everything well" transport (yes, I copy/cut/pasted that because it is equally applicable).

I'm not overly fond of Zeb's Guide...nor do I have any qualms stating why. Tongue out

For versatility and a more Star Frontiers type of system ship, there's the Eagle transporters from Space 1999.

They are modular -- you can change them from a nuclear waste hauling mode to a passenger transport, a medical transport, or command transport, for example. And, despite having the aerodynamics of a brick, have an anti-gravity field so they can land and takeoff from planets with an atmosphere.

You can even strap a rocket booster pack on an Eagle -- does it briefly give it an ADF of 2?

They even made great toys in different varieties.

I like the YT-1300 design, especially this one:

The numerous YT1300 variants are pretty slick too. I really dig this TIE/Falcon amalgam:

TIE Falcon by AdamKop on deviantART... A pretty crazy concept of making a YT-1300 freighter with parts from the TIE Fighter.

Speaking of modular ships, the various combinations from the original V series were pretty slick (fighter, shuttle, passenger transport, & tanker):

As much as I adore the V ships, they're outside the accepted bounds of Star Frontiers b/c they're purely gravitically powered. You might as well go "full Trek" if you go that route.

Space 1999 kind'a straddles the fence.  They have gravity fields, but only internally.  They use regular thrust engines for propulsion, even take-off/landing.

Fortunately for this thread we are not limited to one set of rules, you get to pick one ship from any cinema/television/novel outlet and one from any RPG/gaming outlet, so go ahead and adore those V ships all you want if that's what you prefer as the ultimate ship you want to cruise around in.

If there wasn't so much mystique and novelty behind my choice, I'd probably go with the V craft myself. Cool

A good old flying saucer is my favorite Sci-Fi movie/TV ship... so Lost In Space TV show, but my favorite is the United Planets Cruiser C-57D from the movie Forbidden Planet, it also made appearances on the old Twilight Zone.

I also love the old Atomic Rocket type ships from the old TV serries and movies... Rocky Jones, Space Ranger's various XV (V-2 type ships) would be an example.

In that case, they'd do, if I couldn't find a decent Federation shuttlecraft (at least in terms of small craft).

Something bigger I'd go with some sub-species of Connie.

Madkoifish does a superb reimagination of her.

But deep in my heart, nothing will ever quite match up to the original Great Grey Ladies

As I posted on Facehole... USCSS Nostromo for cinematic (even if it does have magic gravity and FTL), the ByChem Jetsom platform from SDAD5, or... the Suleiman-Class Type S Scout/Courier from Classic Traveller A0, The Imperial Fringe, with upgraded life support so it doesn't smell like gym socks all the time.

Not that I've seen it, but I found this 1936 Soviet sci fi ship that looks like it would be a interesting ride.

I don't think I'd want a ride in a big artillery shell/ship however from the 1902 film Trip to the Moon.

Serenity? It's been a while since I watched it but I distinctly recall episodes where they went to different star systems.

Actually, I believe all of the Firefly's travels were in the same system that all those planets had been terraformed. Its not terribly believable but I suspended disbelief for the sake of enjoying the show.

According to the show its a gravity drive and they have what appears to be 2 modes of use but not really a jump drive. Although the show portrays a hard burn as something powerful.

That might have been what I was thinking of, the hard burn.

Still, I have a tough time subscribing to the system ship premise considering the orign is alluding to an American/Chinese space superiority and the fact that there were more worlds in the series than planets in out solar system (even if you count Pluto as a planet these days) coupled with the fact that some of our planets could never even be "terra-formed". It works as alternate reality where you can write in whatever you want, but not in our time line.

Yes the Serenity verse is one big star system where most planets are orbiting gas giants.  All but one or two worlds are terraformed.  The advantage of living in the core worlds was they were close to the star and you didn't get the nasty byproducts of terraforming a world further out.  They never really explained it all.

Well, for the purpose of this discussion the desired ship does not have to be jump capable...just for "whatever purpose you see fit". Granted interstellar jumps do open the use factor, but it's certainly not a requirement if you don't want it to be. So far everyone is gravitating toward interstellar travel so I can (now) see why it wasn't mentioned. ;)
