Shadow Shack February 11, 2017 - 4:48pm | Does anyone else feel that ChrisDonovan is in dire need of an avatar? Chris, you're far too active to be using the faceless default symbol. I have a slew I can offer up for the cause... |
TerlObar February 11, 2017 - 8:43pm | I should figure out how to set the default to be a sathar. That would probably get people to change it fairly quickly. Ad Astra Per Ardua! iggy February 11, 2017 - 9:14pm | Its fun to see the reveal of a bit of a person's character when they pick their first avatar. I have to admit that I have been expecting an avatoar from ChrisDonovan and hoping for it. -iggy |
Shadow Shack February 12, 2017 - 9:53am | I used to rotate my avatars when I first signed on, and then I simply had a rotating avatar (gif file that switched across 8 or 10 I had loaded). Then I finally settled on the one I use for every board I join. |

ChrisDonovan March 1, 2017 - 10:40am | Its fun to see the reveal of a bit of a person's character when they pick their first avatar. I have to admit that I have been expecting an avatar from ChrisDonovan and hoping for it. Nowhere near as active as I once was since my game collapsed. I rarely bother with Avatars on any of my posting accounts wherever they might be. But I'll give it some thought. *EDIT* I picked one. May change it when it suits me. |

ChrisDonovan March 1, 2017 - 1:05pm | So, out of curiosity, what does one's avatar say about one's personality? |
Bluddworth March 1, 2017 - 2:52pm | In that case my avatar, according to many on the Internet, would have to be an asshole. I would of course use a deviant art asshole, hmm... That sounds like my next google search. |
JCab747 March 1, 2017 - 2:57pm | Avatars are indicative of someone's interests, or just the fact they don't want to be a faceless poster of info. Joe Cabadas |
Shadow Shack March 1, 2017 - 7:21pm | SWEET!!! I dig it, Chris.
So, out of curiosity, what does one's avatar say about one's personality? Well it probably depends on how one was educated. Mine either says I'm heavily into motorcycles or that I'm a cultist white supremacy Nazi bastard. You know, those that have been "properly educated" in the modern public school system which says the Maltese Cross never existed in history until after Hitler rose to power. |
Sargonarhes March 2, 2017 - 5:44pm | Should I be distrubed by what my avatar says about me then? In every age, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same. |

Should I be distrubed by what my avatar says about me then? Does it mean something like "Don't Tread on Me"? Joe Cabadas |
iggy March 2, 2017 - 10:13pm | Well, avatars give a hint of personality but I don't remotely believe that anyone can get much meaningful insight. I get a feeling of someone who likes order. The UPF logo is very orderly. Of course that is tainted by impressions built from all of Chris's past posts. Also, the avatars associate in my mind like faces. When I read posts I pick up a bit on a person's voice and the avatar helps make the conversation more like it is face to face. To this day I still see a dralasite mini in my mind when I read jedion's posts. -iggy |

I should figure out how to set the default to be a sathar. That would probably get people to change it fairly quickly. Just to resurrect this post with a couner-point: there are folks out there that don't mind running a bad guy...or like I have done in the past and present alike, run a bad guy or bad-guy-in-charge campaign. For such types, we might be inclined to retain such an avatar. Now an I <3 Zeb's Guide avatar might be the ticket you're looking for. ;) |
Sargonarhes March 3, 2017 - 7:01pm |
Should I be distrubed by what my avatar says about me then? Does it mean something like "Don't Tread on Me"? Well not really. It's Commander Dawn from the anime Gall Force. He or I should say 'it' (being a bio-mechanical lifeform) commanded a small fleet of Paranoid Axis ships on a special mission. In every age, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same. |

When I read posts I pick up a bit on a person's voice and the avatar helps make the conversation more like it is face to face. To this day I still see a dralasite mini in my mind when I read jedion's posts. I almost picked the image known as "Cody's Regret" or "Clone Regret". What do you think that would have said? http://i2.wp.com/fanofthewars.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Cody-Facepalm-Sean-Sebastian.jpg And what about my posts gave you the impression I like "order"? That I've done a lot of stating and game mechanics work? |
iggy March 4, 2017 - 7:47am | Again, avatars give a hint of personality but I don't remotely believe that anyone can get much meaningful insight. I don't know the background of the Cody image other than guessing it is Revenge of the Sith and that is Obi Wan's cloak. So like everyone, you've found yourself on the wrong side once when you thought you were doing good. How's that for a stab in the dark. This is all in fun like a costume party and no avatar is like coming to the party without a costume. Yes, all the rules and game mechanics you have contributed must combine with your avatar choice to give me an impression of you liking order. Nothing great, profound, or claiming to be accurate, just that having an avatar combines with a person's posts to create and overall impression of the the person. People may choose their avatar a bit like they choose clothes, or what they drive, or how they decorate their home, etc and that is fun to see for those of us that like to meet lots of people. Hanging out here on SF.US is fun and avatars are part of the fun. People that contribute alot or stick around are really appreciated for being part of the party. There are plenty of people who have wandered away that it would be great to have back and have their input to the fun stuff we talk about here. In my memory it is much harder to identify those past SF.US friends who arn't currently here who don't have an avatar but those who do are distinct and have a face as it were modeled on their avatar. On the top of my memory is ImperialLord. Dude where are you? Your missed. So this place is a club and everyone here becomes a friend. Our handles and avatars are part of how we present ourselves as we build our friendships. How's that for waxing philosophical? -iggy |
JCab747 March 4, 2017 - 9:21am | Cody's regret would show he's a Star Wars fan... of course I'd bet 99.9% of those who played Star Frontiers were Star Wars fans. Of course, the Cody image means he likes those Lucas prequels. Joe Cabadas |
TerlObar March 4, 2017 - 10:22am | So I'm curious what you all read into my avatar. Ad Astra Per Ardua! My blog - Expanding Frontier Webmaster - The Star Frontiers Network & this site Founding Editor - The Frontier Explorer Magazine Managing Editor - The Star Frontiersman Magazine |

So I'm curious what you all read into my avatar. That the Sathar rule the universe! Joe Cabadas |
iggy March 4, 2017 - 12:51pm | Ya know, I have a clear marble at work on my desk and when the project managers ask how long it is going to take to invent something brand new I pick it up and say, "Let me consult my crystal ball. It's a small one so it is not very accurate." I know other engineers that have magic eight balls and do about the same thing when asked for definitive answers to subjective questions. So, TerlObar. In fun. Also given that I know you a llittle bit so I don't have as much freedom of ignorance. An avatar that sports the Sathar means you like to root for the bad guy so that there is enough conflict to make the story and climax a real nail bighter before the good guys win. The dates and anniversary shows you have been carrying the tourch for a dead game like Star Frontiers just like the rest of us. -iggy |
Shadow Shack March 4, 2017 - 3:56pm |
So I'm curious what you all read into my avatar. That there are still some 35th Anniversary patches available? |
jedion357 March 5, 2017 - 1:16pm | Well, avatars give a hint of personality but I don't remotely believe that anyone can get much meaningful insight. I get a feeling of someone who likes order. To this day I still see a dralasite mini in my mind when I read jedion's posts. LOL, I've been missing that little dralasite and was thinking to put him back! I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
ChrisDonovan March 5, 2017 - 5:54pm | Well, Igggy's not too far off. I am a bit "orderly" by nature. I'm also just a touch optimistic/utopian-leaning and I inevitably associate the UPF with the "other" Federation of similar initials, which I'm also a big fan of. I think what "Cody's Regret" would represent as an avatar is a touch of the grandly tragic (in the Greek or Shakespearean sense) tradition that Lucas incorporated into the PT plus that I've always associated SF and SW as properties because they're both very "pulp" in tone. As for Terl, I get the sense that he has a bit of the classical romantic in him. He holds SF dear to himself and champions its cause regardless of how hopeless that cause might seem. After all, how many people would honestly offer good money for a 3 + decade old RPG whose tone and style are so far out of the mainstream taste of the current market? (No offense intended...if I was in position to do so, it's something I might have done myself.) |
JCab747 March 5, 2017 - 6:05pm | Here, I'll throw in a new avatar just for good measure. Though I do like that Star Destroyer. Joe Cabadas |
ExileInParadise March 5, 2017 - 6:23pm | This thread inspired me to pick out my own non-default gallery avatar heh. |
iggy March 5, 2017 - 6:48pm | Oh no! Now I have to reassociate avatars to two people in my memory. Ok, now you guys gotta comment on me and my avatar. Fare is fare. -iggy |
JCab747 March 5, 2017 - 7:14pm | Ok, now you guys gotta comment on me and my avatar. Fare is fare.
Well, at least my new Avatar is SF-related. The cover of the 2001 module. Joe Cabadas |
ChrisDonovan March 6, 2017 - 1:08pm | I'm honestly not sure what deeper meaning to ascribe to Iggy's avatar, beyond his fondness for B5... :) |
