jedion357 January 24, 2015 - 5:01am | I like this. What are you thinking for using this? 6/per page, print, laminate, cut out and hand out in game as items are found? version 1.1 is looking nice but SEU for an autopistol? and I think 1 range band is missing. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Tollon January 24, 2015 - 5:29am | Actually, I'm trying to compile the weapons (I can draw) from the magzine at the moment. I have yet to try them in Word, so I don't know how many I can get on a page. The layout for each card is standard that is why SEU is on the card. Being ex-military, I dropped the last range band because pistols have a maxium range of about 75 meters (their are exceptions, I know this because I own a pistol that fires a 30 caliber carbine round and I could hit a target at 150 meters (5 out of 8 times with regular practise)). |
TerlObar January 24, 2015 - 7:41am | v1.1 is even better. A couple more minor things.
As to size, they are almost business card proportioned so you might be able to get 10 per game if you don't want them big. Otherwise I'd guess 8 to a page. Ad Astra Per Ardua! Mother January 24, 2015 - 9:18am | v 1.1 is a big improvement. Devils advocate, the font used for Semiautomatic pistol is difficult for my eyes to read. Maybe a font like Verdana, Courier or Calibri, something modern and clean? |
Abub January 24, 2015 - 12:17pm | This project ROCKS dude. I would love to use these. Heck... I would pay you a small amount of cash for a set of weapon card files.... I can't draw to save my life. I would also consider, if it is possible for these future pistols to just be better then a 20th century handgun.... as far as range is concerned at least. ----------------------------------------------- |
jedion357 January 24, 2015 - 12:31pm | Actually this would make a great center staple pull out in the magazine. If you limit it to just the AD weapons that would mean 18 guns, 6 grenades, and 16 other weapons that is a grand total of 40 plus you'd almost want a blank one for referees to write up a card for their favorite SFman and FE new weapon. Its quite a list and seems like a big undertaking though. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
jedion357 January 24, 2015 - 6:32pm | I like the direction of the card. I worry that the stats should be bold type as well lest they get lost when these are arranged 8 or 10 per page and printed (a test print should tell if thats a problem) I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
TerlObar January 24, 2015 - 6:43pm | They shouldn't be bold like the titles but a heavier line thickness would be helpful. What software are you creating these in? Ad Astra Per Ardua! Tollon January 24, 2015 - 7:15pm | I'm having issue fitting in the ranges because of the font size now, which is Arial 12 pt. The stat titles are Arial 12 pt bold. if you have a suggestion for a better font, I'm all ears. I'm using Neopaint by Neosoft. I like it because of it's easy of use. I'm running one version behind the newest one they have. But I own them both. It's a good program for $50 US. And per Abub request, I'm maintaining the stats from the magazine when creating these cards. Issues 1 and 2 are done with the exception of the Wrist Rocket. I'll have to play around a bit because I'm a mechanic drawer and not a realistic one. |
Tollon January 24, 2015 - 7:34pm | I let Word set the size and can get 10 cards per page. They look fine but won't know until I can print a page out. |
jedion357 January 24, 2015 - 7:41pm | I just realized this said SEMI-automatic pistol from SFman 1. I kept "reading" it and seeing automatic pistol. dope slap! I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Stormcrow January 25, 2015 - 10:23am | Use a mail merge. Don't create each card separately! |
samlangdon January 25, 2015 - 3:15pm | awesome, i really like These two yazarians and this vrusk walk into a bar... |
Tollon January 25, 2015 - 6:46pm | Stromcrow: The program I use allows me to create a picture and store it in a file which the program calls a stamp. These stamps are reusable and can be called up at anytime. So all I'm doing is pasting the card drawing and inserting the information and the weapon drawing into the correct spot and I have a finished card. If I used my own drawings I could have had most the card done by now. Instead, I'm attempting to create a representation of each drawing in the Magazine. I'm a technical drawer and not an artist. That is why the Wrist Rocket hasn't been done yet. I couldn't draw figures as a child but could make mechanic drawings. My brother had that talent. AS of this moment, I have 9 cards complete and working on another three. I finish three in about an hour. If I didn't work for a living, I could make 10 aday without breaking a sweat. To me this is just relaxation and fun to do... |
Rum Rogue January 27, 2015 - 5:18pm | Excellent work. When I compiled and printed out all the weapons years ago I had a standard format that looked like yours; I would place N/A in the unused Ammo/SEU location to avoid player confusion. That is the only suggestion I have other than keep up the great work!! Time flies when your having rum. Im a government employee, I dont goof-off. I constructively abuse my time. |
Putraack January 29, 2015 - 8:10pm | I really like using weapon cards; I've been slowly generating them as-needed for my various Twilight:2000 and Serenity games. The players like the pictures, I like that I can oversee & enforce ammo tracking, as well as having the stats front and center. Plus, when the PCs capture the bad guys' weapons, I can just pass off a card, no need to drag the game to a halt while I read off the stats from our one & only rulebook. Getting them to fit onto business-card blanks would be really useful. |
iggy January 29, 2015 - 9:59pm | @Putraack, That was actually a very effective, simple, and honest sell of using weapon cards. I'm now interested in cards for anything that players carry that have quantities to track. Specifically I am thinking of a player with a med kit in a past game who was always working his character sheet to track all the medical supplies he was using and replenishing. -iggy |
TerlObar January 30, 2015 - 6:36am | Yes, I agree that is a great idea. And the medkit as well. Ad Astra Per Ardua! My blog - Expanding Frontier Webmaster - The Star Frontiers Network & this site Founding Editor - The Frontier Explorer Magazine Managing Editor - The Star Frontiersman Magazine |
iggy January 30, 2015 - 7:58am | I'm thinking about laminating the cards so that used items are marked with a crayon and the marks are wiped away when something is replaced. -iggy |
jedion357 January 30, 2015 - 12:38pm | Getting them to fit onto business-card blanks would be really useful. These are largely the same reasons I like to create a spell book for D&D PCs: Each spell my character knows is written out with description and stats on an index card which is then hole punched in the corner then put on a metal ring. No delay of game to look up a spell description. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
TerlObar January 30, 2015 - 3:03pm | My original Port Loren map and an auxiliary hex map (that I've lost somewhere in my moves) were laminated for that very reason. I had a pair of grease pencils that I could use to draw and add things to the map and then just wipe off when the adventure was over. Laminating them is a great idea. I got my wife a laminating machine for Mother's Day a few years back (at her request) so she could make activity kits for the kids. I'll have to put it to use. Ad Astra Per Ardua! jedion357 January 30, 2015 - 6:27pm | I got my wife a laminating machine for Mother's Day a few years back (at her request) so she could make activity kits for the kids. I'll have to put it to use. LOL, defensive about buy the spouse an appliance for Mothers Day? A dangerous move unless its her idea. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
TerlObar January 30, 2015 - 6:57pm | It was most definitely her idea. It's not something I would have thought to buy. She was quite excited to get it. Life got crazy and she hasn't had a chance to really use it but that doesn't change the fact that she was quite happy. Ad Astra Per Ardua!
