ExileInParadise December 11, 2016 - 1:51pm | The most Star Frontiers-like movie I could come up with is ENEMY MINE. I think there's a good chunk of the Volturnus series here, with a dash of Knight Hawks. Agree? Disagree? Other suggestions? EDIT: I did look at the forums and saw a bunch of mentions of various movies including this one. However, most of that seemed to be movie lists, or how to use this movie as a scenario. My post here are more toward trying to define a single, most quintessentially SF-esque movie. What I was trying to imagine was something like, "If I was going to show someone a single movie and say 'playing Star Frontiers is like that!' what one movie would I pick?" and ENEMY MINE seems to be the stand out that covers the most of what Star Frontiers was about, in a single package. But I could be wrong, which is why I threw this out there. |
iggy December 11, 2016 - 2:53pm | I would have to say Babylon 5. When Babylon 5 came out that was the environment that felt most Star Frontiers-ish to me. Focus on the setting and tech, not the shadows vorlons eternal war part but the tech, the lack of utopia like Star Trek, and the lack of fantasy like Star Wars. Aliens are aliens, tech is not freely traded between empires, and real life struggles still continue in the future. -iggy |
Shadow Shack December 11, 2016 - 6:03pm | I just ordered the Enemy Mine DVD off Amazon.com the other day, awesome deal! Alien Nation is another good SF tale, along with V the Final Battle. |
aemonaylward December 11, 2016 - 9:48pm | I don't think I ever saw the film of Enemy Mine, but I read the novelization to pieces in junior high, and I agree it's a good fit for Star Frontiers. The first time I ever read the article on the Saurian race in Dragon Magazine, I immediately thought of the aliens from that film. As far as general feel of Star Frontiers goes, if they could've set the old Dungeons & Dragons Saturday morning cartoon in outer space, I think that would've come as close as I can imagine to capturing it. The "Galaxy Rangers" cartoon came the closest to that mark of anything that I can think of. |
Shadow Shack December 12, 2016 - 7:55am | I remember the Colonial Viper clone fighters in that show... |
jedion357 December 16, 2016 - 7:08am | I liked Earth 2 series when it came out. It was SF in feel. Outland too Enemy Mine is as well. Parts of Battle Beyond the Stars has a SF feel and Silent Running as well- ag ship with domes and the robots Just bought and rewatched Ice Pirates and the handling of robots in that is very close to SF and for once the roboticist character gets major play! Edit: The Black Hole movie although the Cygnus is decks parallel I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
