ExileInParadise December 10, 2016 - 2:48pm | In Star Frontiers Alpha Dawn Basic and Expanded Rules, players are given the choice of which of the four spacefaring races to play: Dralasite, Human, Vrusk, and Yazirian. But where did they come from in the Frontier? On the Alpha Dawn map and Frontier Worlds table, each of the worlds of the Frontier has an indicator of the racial makeup iand population size of that world. With the racial and population data, you can generate Character Birth World Table for your player character races based on the demographics of the Frontier. Roll for the Character's Birth World on the appropriate racial table below: TABLE: DRALASITE BIRTH WORLDS (Roll d100) 01-14 14% Triad (Cassidine) 15-33 19% Inner Reach (Dramune) 34-44 11% Outer Reach (Dramune) 45-58 14% Groth (Fromeltar) 59-75 17%Terledrom (Fromeltar) 76-89 14% Gran Quivera (Prenglar) 90-00 11% Pale (Truane's Star) TABLE: HUMAN BIRTH WORLDS (Roll d100) 01-10 10% Rupert's Hole (Cassidine) 11-17 7% Triad (Cassidine) 18-24 7% Laco (Dixon's Star) 25-30 6% Outer Reach (Dramune) 31-40 10% Kdikit (Madderly's Star) 41-47 7% Gran Quivera (Prenglar) 48-54 7% Morgaine's World (Prenglar) 55-65 11% Minotaur (Theseus) 66-74 9% Lossend (Timeon) 75-80 6% Pale (Truane's Star) 81-89 9% New Pale (Truane's Star) 90-00 11% Clarion (White Light) TABLE: VRUSK BIRTH WORLDS (Roll d100) 01-11 11% Triad (Cassidine) 12-20 9% Outer Reach (Dramune) 21-34 14% Terledrom (Fromeltar) 35-50 16% Ken'zah Kit (K'aken-Kar) 51-66 16% Zik-kit (Kizk'-Kar) 67-80 14% Zoot-kit (K'Tsa-Kar) 81-91 11% Gran Quivera (Prenglar) 92-00 9% Pale (Truane's Star) TABLE: YAZIRIAN BIRTH WORLDS (Roll d100) 01-15 15% Hentz (Araks) 16-29 14% Yast (Athor) 30-37 8% Triad (Cassidine) 38-45 8% Outer Reach (Dramune) 46-60 15% Hargut (Gruna Goru) 61-70 10% Gran Quivera (Prenglar) 71-80 10% Histran (Screen Fron) 81-92 12% Hakosoar (Scree Fron) 93-00 8% Pale (Truane's Star) METHODOLOGY For GMs who want to create similar tables for Zebulon's Guide or add their own systems and worlds to the map, the tables above were calculated this way. For each race, list out the worlds that race can come from. A world with a population code of * is on the table for all races. A world with a population code of D/V was on the table for Dralasite and Vrusk only. A world with a specific population code was on that race's population table only. Next, I assigned a "racial share" count to each world in each table. 1 share if the planet racial code was * 2 shares if the planet racial code was D/V 4 shares if the planet racial code was D,H,V, or Y alone If the racial code was *, than that world got 1 share for the race. If the racial code was D/V, then the Dralasites got 2 shares, and Vrusks got two shares for that world. If the racial code was one race only, than that race got 4 shares of population for that planet. If your game has more races, then use the number of races total rather than 4. Finally, I assigned shares to each world based on its population code. 1 share for Outpost 2 shares for Light 3 shares for Medium 4 shares for Heavy Once I added up the Racial and Population shares assigned to each world, I got a total share amount for that world. Next I added up all the shares for a race's worlds. Dralasites worlds totalled 36 shares, while Humans totalled 70, and Vrusk totalled 44 while Yazirian totalled 51. Then I divided 100 by the total number of shares that race had on its table to get a percent amount each share was worth. For example, Dralasites had 44 shares, and so each share was worth 2.7% Finally I multiplied by the number of shares gained by each world on the table by that percent amount per share, to get the final percentage for that world. This told me what percent of that race's overall population was born on that specific world, out of all of the worlds they could have been born on. To create the dice ranges, I started with 01, added the share percent to a running total. The running total was the current ending number of the range for the world. Then picked the next number, added the next share percent to a running total. That gave me the ending number of the range up to 00. The reason I went through all of that mess was to figure out how to fairly distribute a racial population across the frontier, taking into account the Frontier's existing racial and population diversity. More sane people could probably figure out a better way. This was just mine to use in my home game. In reality, there should be at least a 1% chance for each race to be born on every world of the frontier, and a percent chance to be born on specific stations, or on spacecraft in system, or even in The Void. Creating that level of detailed background character generation is an exercise for the reader. Bonus points if you also create background careers or family history based on the trade code for their birth world... |
TerlObar December 10, 2016 - 6:10pm | sweet. I have always intended to do something like this but never got around to it. I'd love to have it as an article in the Frontier Explorer. ExileInParadise December 12, 2016 - 8:18pm | I just finished making my updated Frontier Worlds spreadsheet with the Frontier as it stands at the end of SFKH4 (and before Zebs appeared) including Zebulon, Sundown, Rihanna, Belnafaer, Tristkar, Padda, Waller Nexus, and Liberty system. But those systems happened after Alpha Dawn where characters are created... |
jedion357 December 16, 2016 - 6:57am | I think this would make a great article. Two tables: one is AD/KHs cannon sans Zebs and the other includes Zebs I also second JCabs suggestion that a character should have a 1% chance that he was born on a world not known for his species living there ie a Yazirian on Pale. Handle this by 1% = roll on other which would require a second table for each race that would only include the planets that species is not listed as a dominant population on. On second thought, all the extra tables sound like it would make this article overwhelming so one article on just AD cannon world of origin and a second one later on Zebs. EDIT: what about characters born in space? a small number of individuals will have been born to traders that never really spend time on any one planet or to belt miners etc. Perhaps this should be part of that 1% I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
ExileInParadise December 16, 2016 - 10:29pm | Here's a quick and dirty hack to my tables above to account for the 1% chances of a special birth. I simply took a percent from a most populous world for that race, adjusted the ranges, and left 00 to be the special circumstance. Given how many births probably happen planetside compared to amongst spacers, that 1% might be charitable even when covering all of the special cases. UPDATED CHARACTER BIRTH WORLD TABLES Roll for the Character's Birth World on the appropriate racial table below: TABLE: DRALASITE BIRTH WORLDS (Roll d100) 01-14 14% Triad (Cassidine) 15-32 18% Inner Reach (Dramune) 33-43 11% Outer Reach (Dramune) 44-57 14% Groth (Fromeltar) 58-74 17% Terledrom (Fromeltar) 75-88 14% Gran Quivera (Prenglar) 89-99 11% Pale (Truane's Star) 00-00 1% Special: Space Station, Belter, Void Jumper, or from world race is normally not present on. jedion357 December 18, 2016 - 7:51am | Yes, 00 special case as is, but it would be helpful to list in the special case thd non-race-specific worlds. True enough. Thinking about this you could have special cases where Special came up and lets say it was a Yazirian- the player chose space as the birth location but specified that his character's parents were tramp freighters and the ship just happened to be docked at the space station over Hentz. This character could claim citizenship by birth with Hentz. even though he did not grow up there. This could be significant if the game went in a Yazirian themed direction. And since Hentz is a tightly controlled society that is not very welcoming of outsiders, namely non yazirians, this birth feature could be a benefit giving the PC easier access to the surface of Hentz. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |

ExileInParadise December 18, 2016 - 2:24pm | Jedion please write up what you mean since I am not clear how to apply what you're suggesting to the various incarnations of what I threw out here so far. You suggest there simply be three entries on some table... do you mean three entries on each of the 4 core race entries with the 5th table be stations only with some flat percentage for each? Iggy made a point of repeating a desire for a table of all birthworlds as an option so that someone from a race could be born anywhere, and the "Special Births" table I cribbed up sort of covers that, along with space station, and the spacer stuff all together. I couldn't think of a simpler way to get Iggy's idea and the space station stuff I originally mentioned as an afterthought in there, using the size of the station to influence the percent chance a special birth would happen on that one. I put the void jumper on there because Knight Hawks campaign book describes the jump as 3-15 seconds long subjectively experienced. So there's a tiny smidgen of a chance. That's also why the Void deceleration has the extra percent... on the theory that the craziness and stress of the Void jump itself might induce labor which then results in pregnant travellers giving birth, possibly prematurely, during the deceleration phase. But all of this is abstracting heavily and not meant to be a simulation of Frontier demographics and such. I just took the race and population data from the map and threw it together. That's also why I tried to "show my math" to clearly get the assumptions out there so that the Star Frontiers experts can fix it. I am just tossing stuff out there - everyone here is free to take it and run with it in whatever direction they like. I'd be curious to see what folks make of adding the Zebs stuff in for example. But if people are refraining from posting their own modified versions - please don't on my account. When I wrote these here, it was for everyone to take, use, abuse, or modify at will, as a sort of gift to the folks keeping this game alive and growing. Another way to go would be to scrap all my noise so far, and start over with all the locations defined by system - roll for system only by race allowing all the systems as small fractions. Then roll for location or circmstance within the system, including planets, moons, space stations, belters, trade ships whatever. I am sure there's even more ways - and I hope someone writes them up too. |

jedion357 December 19, 2016 - 6:02am | That's looking real good. Like it. all it needs is a paragraph or two as introduction and it looks like a good 1-2 page article for the zine. I think I might have to dabble in doing some character sketches of the core four in charcoal for this. especially since it looks like my scanner is finally working again. Makes me want to revisit my article on Backgrounds in FE #5 I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
ExileInParadise December 19, 2016 - 11:20am | STAR FRONTIERS CHARACTER BIRTH LOCATIONS In Star Frontiers Alpha Dawn Basic and Expanded Rules, players are given the choice of which of the four spacefaring races to play: Dralasite, Human, Vrusk, and Yazirian. But where do these characters come from within the Frontier? On the Alpha Dawn map and Frontier Worlds table, each of the worlds of the Frontier has an indicator of the racial makeup and population size of that world. With this racial and population data, players can find their character's birth location, for their chosen race, based on the demographics of the Frontier. With the addition of Star Frontiers Knight Hawks, there are also other possibilities of space-born characters from stations over the Frontier worlds, deep within the star systems away from specific worlds, or even during a Void Jump. Roll for the Character's Birth World on the appropriate racial table below: TABLE: DRALASITE BIRTH WORLDS (Roll d100) 01-14 14% Triad (Cassidine) 15-32 18% Inner Reach (Dramune) 33-43 11% Outer Reach (Dramune) 44-57 14% Groth (Fromeltar) 58-74 17% Terledrom (Fromeltar) 75-88 14% Gran Quivera (Prenglar) 89-99 11% Pale (Truane's Star) 00-00 1% Special: From world race is normally not present on (Hentz, Yast, Rupert's Hole, Laco, Hargut, Ken'zah Kit, Zik-kit, Kawdl-Kar, Kdikit, Morgaine's World, Histran, Hakosoar, Minotaur, Lossend, New Pale, Clarion) or roll on Spacer Birth Locations table below. jedion357 December 19, 2016 - 9:12pm | @ Exileinparadise: do you want Terl or me to grab this and submit it or would you like to do the honors at frontierexplorer.org ? I ask as one of the fields you fill out while submitting it is how you want to be credited in the zine- as Exileinparadise or by your real name as well as a few other pieces of information and a comment field where you can leave any pertinent comments. Look for the big gold button. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
