Tchklinxa January 1, 2016 - 3:03pm | Refer to: Vimh 2.0 or Return of the Ratling. First stab at translating society notes to Vimh from thread on other forum: I hope this helps... Society: Vimh family groups are called "packs", packs are formed when a male & female leave to start their own family. Packs are led usually by the largest strongest male though sometimes a large female will lead. Large extended family packs sometimes have multiple leaders, community packs usually have multiple leaders. Larger social structures of the Vimh are confusing to other races indicating a much more complex social structure then what is generally assumed by other races. When packs integrate each other the initial chaos is often disturbing to other races in general however once an Alpha male or female is established Vimh generally get along fine. Vimh are often seen as antisocial creatures by other races however Vimh take care of their ill, weak, young and those in need in their communities in direct opposition to the stereotype. Vimh prefer to live in social groups of three or more and have a very social culture amongst each other but are a very closed society towards other races. New packs starts when three or more Vimh form social group. If the new pack is a family pack it is not considered a complete pack until the kittens (children) are born. Vimh social organization is usually made up of three personality types Alpha, Beta and Gammas. Vimh prefer to work in minimum groups of three 1) the alpha- aggressive 2) the beta - peace keeper/ keeper of the tribal wisdom and 3) he that slinks in the shadows. Typically when other races deal with the Vimh they engage with the Alpha who is supported by the Beta but the third the Gamma is almost always behind them in some sort of support capacity including sneaking up on others. In dealing with the other races it has been observed by xeno-sociologists: all three personality types also equal tactics being employed. The Alpha's strength and aggression seems to correspond with the Vimhs expansion into the Frontier and Sathar space, while the Beta Peace Keeper seems to express tactics of avoiding war as means to an end, and finally the Gamma that slink in the shadows corresponds with exactly what they are doing, staying mostly hidden, on the edges of society or only in specific areas of society, but what they are doing that neither Sathar or UPF know is their own secret business. It has been argued the various Packs of Vimh are studying, and learning from as many races as they can, they have their survival to worry about, as intelligent beings no doubt want a better life for themselves and their people. What should be added I missed from other thread or is confusing & needs clarity? "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
jedion357 January 1, 2016 - 3:20pm | I liked the notes on attitudes: vrusk security officer observing debarking vimh and the comment by the vimh, "let the games begin" They're a good basis for describing vimh attitudes I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Tchklinxa January 1, 2016 - 3:41pm | Okay I will work on attitudes latter probably tomorrow... I was not sure if you wanted that included. Luch time followed by a SF game today ;) "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
Tchklinxa January 3, 2016 - 12:05pm | Attitudes: Observing several Vimh families debark a shuttle. "It is a Mischief of Vimhs." said the Vrusk security officer to himself. One Vimh male paused made eye contact with the Vrusk and said to himself in Vimh "Let the games begin." The Vimh culture is perceived by other races as a culture of thieves, scavengers with no culture of their own and a health risk. The Vimh usually perceive the other races as hypocrites with a superiority complex, wasteful fools, ignorant about who is the health risk and Vimh culture. As a result Vimh take great pride in proving that they are just as smart and capable as the other races, usually by out smarting them. Vimh literature revels in tales of Vimh circumventing security, trickery and all sorts of shenanigans in which they best members of other races. Vimh enjoy the challenge of solving puzzles and view life as a great puzzle, maze or game. Vimh generally have one set of social rules, ethics and values for dealing with other races and different rules for their own. However it is possible for an individual from another race to be accepted as a Pack member, once this happens that individual is expected to live by Vimh rules. "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
Tchklinxa January 3, 2016 - 11:49am | Vimh Proverbs: Life is a Great Maze. The Great Maze has many dead ends. Never soil your own liter. The puzzle is ever changing. The rules of the Game set the Stakes. The Pack is the center of the Maze. "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
Tchklinxa January 3, 2016 - 11:47am | All Games have a beginning and an end. "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
Tchklinxa January 3, 2016 - 12:02pm | Know your Pack. "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
Tchklinxa January 3, 2016 - 12:22pm | Vimh Professions: Naturally Vimh make good thieves, hackers, smugglers, con artists, spies, gamblers and bounty hunters. Vimh also make excellent security specialists, detectives, mechanics, salvage experts, and decoders. Any profession that they can approach as a puzzle solving endeavor will appeal to them or a way of out smarting others. "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
Tchklinxa January 3, 2016 - 1:44pm | Vimh Sports: Vimh believe in gambling on sports. Vimh Cage Fighting is a combat sport in which Vimh practice a combination of boxing, kicking, wrestling and tail whipping in a cage. This blood sport is extremely popular amongst the Vimh. In addition Vimh enjoy contests that are obstacle maze races between contestants. Vimh generally also enjoy the sports of other races. "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
Tchklinxa January 3, 2016 - 2:02pm | Vimh Food & Drinks: Vimh are omnivorous and as a result eat both plant and animal material. Vimh are often perceived as consumers of garbage this is untrue unless they have no other choice. Though they can tolerate a wide range of foods in various conditions like other beings it is healthier and preferred by them that their food be fresh. Vimh prefer fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, grains, fresh vegetables, dried vegetables and low fat meats. Vimh value clean fresh water, flavored waters, juices and teas. Vimh like other races like alcohol and sugars though it is unhealthy for them. "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
Tchklinxa January 3, 2016 - 2:16pm | Medical Notes: Vimh cannot vomit, choking is a real danger for Vimh. Vimh teeth grow constantly so Vimh regularly grind their own teeth with special dental devices and are always looking for new flovored woods or chew toys to keep their teeth healthy. "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
jedion357 January 4, 2016 - 7:21am | I would think that because of the test and experiments done at the lab that the vimh would have a certain antipathy for mazes. At the same time its engineered into them to puzzle solve and ie run the maze but its also cultural that they hate it. So one one hand they enjoy puzzle solving but one the other they verbally protest it. Another ptoverb: lost in the maze. "always sh#t where someone else eats" I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
jedion357 January 4, 2016 - 7:31am | I can see them discovering some wood like substance that was incredibly durable, would wear down there teeth, but be enjoyable to chew on such that the cliche would develop that you always see a vimh with X chew stick in their mouth like you always expect to see certain characters rolling a cigar around in their mouth. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Tchklinxa January 4, 2016 - 11:30am | Another proverb: lost in the maze. "always sh#t where someone else eats" You make a good point... they might not like mazes on the other hand genetically they like hiddy holes, like exploring in all the niches of places so I was thinking if when they build communities on the fringes they still have that maze quality due to them preferring tubes/tunnels and so on, also really short small doors, often in the areas no one else goes. Maybe mazes became a metaphor was my thought... past the tests. But you make a good point. Puzzles: "In the beginning, the pieces are jumbled" "The universe's a puzzle; no need to make sense out of it." "If it doesn't fit, don't force it" "Some puzzles require scissors" "In Puzzledom, patience is key" "You must reveal each piece to even begin" "Sort the colors and shapes" Any good puzzle qoute... I think they might be leery of dispensed food (not in their control some way some how) as that is the main way the scientists set the poor ratlings up... either spiking their food & water with substances, or using it to condition them to either train them or run psychology tests. Ratlings might be suspicious of "free" food from outsiders believing it might be a trap. So if say someone wanted to help a starving rattling colony, they could not just give them food as no one would touch it, the ratlings would only be conferrable stealing it. "Beware free food" "Freely given, freely accepted, freely trapped" They would love Riddles & at least a few might be prone to say things like "puzzle me this..." Yes for sure on them always having chews handy, I am thinking they might view the chews like cigars or fine drink, exotic woods, flavored woods, special composites, materials that can warmed & cooled even. It would totally be a Vimh thing. "Never fire a laser at a mirror." |
