New Game, Old Players

Finally managed to cajole my regular Cthulhu D20 players into playing a game of Star Frontiers last Monday.  2 of them are seasoned SF veterans who just haven't played a game in 10 years or so, another was a newbie to the system.

It was funny, the simple math seemed pretty taxing to guys that have been playing complicated systems for years the last time we did character creation a couple years ago, so this time I just handed out some old characters and rolled with it.

Did the Volturnus shuffle, but let them keep their weapons, seeing that the majority of the guys know what happens every time someone locks your weapons in a locker, and doubled the bad guys, throwing in a skein suit or 2 for good measure.

Thought it would be a one-shot, but the guys want to rip it again in a couple weeks.  The new guy goes "I feel so wholesome...this system is great!"  What the...

Anyway, we'll see were this goes...

LOL!

Foot in mouth It is the straight forward approach of the game, no billion dice needed, no wierd cards needed, just rules that get you going and running and having fun. When I played D&D I noticed people would muck up things trying to fix things that probably didn't really need fixing. And after a while various game systems became so complicated it was silly and pointless and slowed the games down too much.

Have fun.

"And now we're going to introduce FEATs."

Yeah, don't. Just...don't. Wink
I'm not overly fond of Zeb's Guide...nor do I have any qualms stating why. Tongue out

Yep, The Moldvay & Mentzer boxed sets were the bomb.

1e AD&D was complicated enough, why they had to make it more so with future editions is beyond me. Oh, wait...there was also Top Secret. Innocent

Yeah, Top Secret!  I never got to play it, but one of the dudes that played my game the other night had a brother that ran Top Secret games...and of course Red/Blue box D&D.  His older brother (Mike) was notorious for pioneering the concept of 'Wandering Damage.'  Wandering Damage was applied whenever the players were too busy screwing around and goofing off and not paying attention...

Nowadays, with all the distractions of cell phones, YouTube, etc...maybe Wandering Damage should be reintroduced...

Too funny-

I gotta say, for the D20 type-games, that's what I like about the Call of Cthulhu d20 rules.  No bloat, feats, talents, Wealth dynamic, etc...Actually pretty easy to roleplay the game without even looking at the rules all night.  Unfortunately, the books are all outta print and cost a pretty penny to buy on Amazon or wherever...got 4 of them at the table not IF needed.

Was really excited about D20 Future when it came out...but man, an index in any of them books wouldn't have hurt.  In the end, the guys all wanted to go back to the d20 Cthulhu rules to run our futuristic campaigns.  Cool that we're back on SF now, for the immediate future at least!.

Gotta love earning credits...

TS was a clunky system at best, encounters took far too long to resolve. I'm told a later edition fixed that, but I only have experience with the original set.

Chaosium Inc still a very active company with alot of products for Cthulu in alot of different time periods. More old school with a standard set of skills and some attributes.
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

My RPG group started a homebrew Star Frontiers adventure awhile back. I've written about it here: http://www.starfrontiers.us/node/8697

They're getting pretty close to finishing it. So far it's been good fun, although we usually have at least one occasion per play session where we have to look something up as we don't remember the rules so well Laughing
