Don't want to ruin a perfectly good SF role playing site, and at the risk of boring all who read this, I wanted to post re: this song. This particular song has intrigued me since I was a teen. It was on the flip side of a hit (you're my best friend) and was never played on the radio at the time as far as I know.

I came across it again recentlyand saw some of the background on the song and liked the story (or guess I finally understood the story behind the song. I have always been a sucker for a story song and this sad 1 really was something queen never ever tried again.

Here is some info from a lyrics discussion page-

  • Brian May studied astrophysics, which gave him the impetus for this song. He considered science for a career, and when he dropped out of his astrophysics degree to start Queen, it caused a huge rift between him and his father, who believed Brian was throwing his life and career away - even though he had helped his son build his signature Red Special guitar as a youngster. It was only when his father saw Queen play in Madison Square Garden in 1978 that the elder May finally acknowledged that his son had made the right choice. A clearly emotional Brain May recalled this story in the Days of Our Lives documentary.
  • May based the song around a story by Herman Hesse called The River.

LYRICS

In the year of '39 assembled here the Volunteers
In the days when lands were few
Here the ship sailed out into the blue and sunny morn
The sweetest sight ever seen.
And the night followed day And the story tellers say
That the score brave souls inside
For many a lonely day sailed across the milky seas
Never looked back, never feared, never cried.

Don't you hear my call though you're many years away
Don't you hear me calling you
Write your letters in the sand For the day I take your hand
In the land that our grandchildren knew.

In the year of '39 came a ship in from the blue
The volunteers came home that day
And they bring good news of a world so newly born
Though their hearts so heavily weigh
For the earth is old and grey, little darling we'll away
But my love this cannot be
For so many years have gone though I'm older but a year
Your mother's eyes from your eyes cry to me.

Don't you hear my call though you're many years away
Don't you hear me calling you
Write your letters in the sand For the day I take your hand In the land that our grandchildren knew.
Don't you hear my call though you're many years away
Don't you hear me calling you
All your letters in the sand cannot heal me like your hand
For my life
Still ahead
Pity Me.

Two of my best friends in college were huge Queen fans, so I've heard this one a lot, and knew the background.

I can clearly hear it in my head while reading those lyrics; I sometimes get goosebumps from it.

I agree. Its one that sticks to you.  It is strange to see discussions of TIME DILATION in conversations about the song.
