When you play Star Frontiers, what is the tone of your game?  Is it serious?  Is it silly?  Do you play it as space opera, or is it hard science?

Tell us about your style, even if you haven't played in years.

I pretty much take all of my cues from the way things are in the boxed set - or, at least, how that appeared to me. So, it's not really hard sci-fi, but it's not really space opera either. There are elements of both in the mix, but not in a way that's too shlocky. Zeb's Guide did originally make me think that things were heading a tad more towards hardish sci-fi, but once we'd incorperated into adventures we didn't really skip a beat. I guess in the long run it's bits of Star Wars (Episode 4, without the CGI) with bits of various other things thrown into the mix.

I've never been one for silly settings with a couple noteable exemptions that I never played terribly much: Paranoia and Toon for example. So whenever I play SF I tend toward the serious side of things.

I'm also not terribly 'hard science' but I like it to be realistic enough so that its at least somewhat believable. Gritty - sort of Firefly-like I guess but with much less of a cowboys-in-space feel.
I don't have to outrun that nasty beast my friend...I just have to outrun you! Wink

Generally let the players go with what they are feeling so either way. Do try and keep the players in line with their characters. Each race has pros and cons and alot of players seem to want to forget the cons like it aint easy to get a shirt on a Yazirian.
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

Mine is a little more serious - but with light moments.

Serious: The Mega Corps are wholly corrupt and a forced to be checked - taking cues from real life. This gets a lot of traction with my older son.

Light: The races on Volturnus, the Chukkas. My younger one loves this.

Mine is loosely based on the Star Wars fall of the Republic/rise of the Empire plot: an upstart dictator rises to power and ransacks the Frontier with larger-than-HS:20 carriers & cruisers, thus creating a militant presence that even the Sather eventually learn to shun.

Nothing hard science, pretty much canon based with incorporated tid bits from Zeb's (mega corps and their personalities mostly, after that the races and their home worlds...I really don't use much else from that tome) and spotted with house rules.
I'm not overly fond of Zeb's Guide...nor do I have any qualms stating why. Tongue out
