Hello Explorers!

The Frontier Explorer presents

Sathar Destroyer Technical Manual cover imageThe Sathar Destroyer Technical Manual

The Sathar! They have repeatedly invaded the Frontier and their deadly red ships have always remained a mystery. Rumors abound that top secret UPF files exist giving details on sathar ship interiors and details of the sathar culture and military. No UPF official has ever admitted to the existence of this information.

Now, The Frontier Explorer presents to citizens of the Frontier the deck plans of a sathar destroyer. These plans were recently declassified from Starfleet records and represent data obtained from an undetonated derelict ship found drifting since the First Sathar War. These plans reveal the true alienness of these creatures and underscore the terror that these ships should instill in all Frontier citizens.

This 30 page document contains complete maps and descriptions of the interior of the sathar destroyer, the most common sathar vessel found in the Star Frontiers game. It also includes information on the the philosophy of the ship's design and cultural elements about the sathar to allow game masters to develop similar plans for other ships. While the sathar are specific to Star Frontiers, this ship and deck plans can be easily adapated for use in other game systems.

In addition to the PDF with the ship descriptions, the download includes two sets of full scale maps. Both sets were produced at 100dpi and have a scale of 1 half inch (50 pixels) = 1 meter. The first set has a half inch square grid superimposed on it and is designed to be printed and used for tabletop play with miniatures or the counters provided in the Star Frontiers game. The second set is identical but has had the grid removed to be used with virtual tabletop game systems.

As is true with all the Frontier Explorer products, and per our agreement with Wizards of the Coast in creating Star Frontiers material, this download is completely free. But while we can't charge for our products, we are allowed to accept donations and “tips” from interested users. The Frontier Explorer Presents series is our “tip jar”. As such, we are releasing this project as a pay-what-you-want product to allow donations from the community to help support the Frontier Explorer.

If you like what you've seen in the published issues of the Frontier Explorer magazine and want to help keep it going, consider making a donation when you download this title. If you don't want to contribute, that's fine as well. Enjoy the free deck plans. If, after downloading this product or any of our magazine issues, you want to make a donation, just visit our website and hit the donate button in the left sidebar. All donations go toward maintaining the magazine's website and producing the magazine and special issues.

We hope you enjoy this special Frontier Explorer Presents issue. As always, keep exploring!

You can get the deck plans either at the Frontier Explorer website (in the Special Issues section) or on DriveThruRPG/RPGNow.

This is Spam!  Pushing a product on us and all!

lol

I was looking at the RPGNow listing this morning.  I will be buying it soon, but my first SF adventure will not include anything from it.

But if my first (and then followup second adventure) game with SF and my group goes well... I'll totally use material from this for adventure three.

I just checked out the PDF from http://frontierexplorer.org/special_issues.  Wow.  Just Wow.  I'll still be getting it from DriveThru to support FE but very nicely done.

That's an awesome book. I just have one question: Don't the Sathar self-destruct their vessels instead of letting them fall into enemy hands? How do we explain it its drifting or being captured in that case?

Llllloooovvve the quickdeath. AnimuX is rockin'.

This article here:
http://frontierexplorer.org/book/sathar-military-organization
actually fortold the coming of this document and explained the two sets of remains of sathar destroyers recovered by the UPF. One actually failed to detonate from battle damage and latter collided with a moon leaving little wrechage worth analyzing. The other also failed to detonate from battle damage and  through clever detective work by one analyst it was eventually tracked down drifting out of a system decades later.

I liked that quickdeath too so I had to use it.  As for how it was found, I hand waved as jedion357 said in the article he linked to.  Basically the idea was that for some reason, early in the fighting around what would become Morgaine's World, the destroyer in question as damaged beyond repair and due to a failure of some sort failed to detonate it's engines.  The relevant bit from that article (as told from the person presenting) is below:

Quote:
As you are all aware, in the decisive final battle of the Sathar War around the planet we now know as Morgaine's World, there were hundreds of ships lost on both sides and many sathar ships fled at the battle's end.  It is also well known that sathar ships, rather than be boarded, detonate their engines to completely obliterate the ship.  This seems to be an automatic response that is also triggered when the ship is destroyed in battle.  There are many reports from the War of sathar ships that were cut to ribbons which then subsequently detonated their engines destroying the fragments.

However, a careful study of the details of the battle, which I did as part of my doctoral dissertation, shows that not every destroyed ship detonated.  It turns out that there were two ships from that final battle, both destroyed early in the fighting, that didn't detonate their engines.  These ships were both destroyed in the first hour of the battle and drifted out of the combat zone during the ensuing hours as the battle raged on.  Once it was over, no one was interested, let alone capable, of following up and looking for drifting hulks, especially given the fact that for the last many hours every sathar ship destroyed had been blowing itself up.  No one expected there to be anything to look for and so no one looked.

After I published the findings in my dissertation just over fifteen years ago, Spacefleet's S3 Division started looking for those ships, hoping to find one or both to study.  I was also offered a commission in Starfleet which I accepted not knowing about the S3 division or the search for the ships I had identified.

Starfleet has actually found both ships.  The first, a frigate, was discovered over a decade ago.  You haven't heard anything about it as there is nothing really to report.  The ship was discovered but it had crashed into one of the moons orbiting the outermost planet in the Prenglar system.  Apparently, it's velocity at the time of destruction put it on a long period orbit around Prenglar and as it was passing through the outer system, it collided with the moon.  All that is left is a big crater and shrapnel.  Very little of the ship survived.

We were much more fortunate with the second ship.  This one is nearly intact.  It was finally discovered nearly 700 AU from Prenglar after years of careful survey work trying to locate it.  A year and a half ago, we were able to recover it and begin studying the ship and attempting to decipher the records and information contained on-board.  I'm here to present some preliminary findings.

It's hand-wavy but no ship system is perfect so it's not completely unreasonable.

I miss-remembered: the ship that crashed into the moon was a frigate. I like toms approach to the discovery of a mostly in tact destroyer.

A disruption of its ability to detonate makes sense. Thanks.

I don't tend to use a lot of deck plans or other maps but these are nicely done.
