AnimuX August 25, 2013 - 12:07pm | Here is an image of a sathar soldier ready for battle. I drew this up and colored it in with Manga Studio 4 and a Wacom Bamboo tablet. I tried to stay true to the old comic art style used in the SF rulebooks and modules. What do you think? |
jedion357 February 1, 2014 - 6:52pm | I'm all for preserving and honoring the cannon material as it forms a baseline from which we all start, it becomes a common language that we all speak with near complete understanding. However, i equally am open to departing from cannon when neccessary (example: my timeline project). We dont have to be slaves to it just recognize the role it plays within the community. I do wish we had the saurian pic when we did the saurian project a while back. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
bossmoss February 1, 2014 - 8:42pm | Animux, thanks for the 2nd attempt - I love it! Sorry for being such a grump. |
oTTo February 3, 2014 - 2:06am |
It had been some years since my last SF search and binge. This time around I got more than I expected. Animux, amazing work. Keep it up man. I would love to see your versions of the Volturnous races, personally. I look forward to seeing more of your work. |
KRingway February 3, 2014 - 12:45pm | Here's a very quick scribble of my take on things. For some reason or other, my brain has locked onto a lizard-Skeksis-Sontaran vibe... |
KRingway February 3, 2014 - 12:53pm | Actually, the above is probably better suited as a Thyrann... |
jedion357 February 3, 2014 - 1:07pm | Here's a very quick scribble of my take on things. For some reason or other, my brain has locked onto a lizard-Skeksis-Sontaran vibe... I like this. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
KRingway February 3, 2014 - 1:50pm | Thanks! The idea that doesn't come across in my pic is that the eyes and the muscle mass around them sort of bulge/extend out more. Not exactly like a chamaeleon, but along similar lines. Their bodies are large and robust and they favour spacesuit style garb, hence my Sontaran reference. |
KRingway February 3, 2014 - 2:40pm | This is probably a bit more like it, or some sort of amalgam of the two. Still not exactly what I had in my mind's eye... |
KRingway February 3, 2014 - 4:35pm | One more doodle before I turn in for the night. |
Blankbeard February 3, 2014 - 8:52pm | I think I like all three of the lizard people you've drawn. The first is a straight up lizard guy and I want to say my favorite, but I'm also really digging this last one. He's got a lizard/vulture/turkey/frog thing going on in his general shape and yet the loose skin gives him an unexpected quality. Is that a scale or knob on the skin? Looking at the hook of the beak makes me think these guys would be carnivores. It also looks like that mouth could open extremely wide. With no teeth that I see, did you consider them to swallow their food whole? I don't know if you put a lot of background into it or not but it's a very interesting piece and I'd certainly use it to illustrate an alien race. |
AnimuX February 3, 2014 - 10:38pm | @bossmoss: No worries. :-) @Jedion: Nice LZ pic! You should do another with a futuristic shuttle in place of the helicopter. @KRingway: Really like the style to your sketches. The Sathar pic from another art thread is outstanding too. Pile it on SF fans. The more art you all post the better this thread gets! :D |
Blankbeard February 3, 2014 - 11:43pm | Ok, I realize now that two different people are posting pictures. No matter, I like them both. |
KRingway February 4, 2014 - 12:53am | Looking at the hook of the beak makes me think these guys would be carnivores. It also looks like that mouth could open extremely wide. With no teeth that I see, did you consider them to swallow their food whole? I don't know if you put a lot of background into it or not but it's a very interesting piece and I'd certainly use it to illustrate an alien race. I think it's more likely to be a Thyrann rather than a Saurian - or maybe I'll just make up a new race I was thinking more along the lines of them being acquatic somewhere in their past. At the moment it all still needs redrawing and redrawing until the image I have in my head comes out onto paper via the pen. |
bossmoss February 4, 2014 - 2:27am | I think it totally works as a Thyrann. I like that craggy look. I'll try to dig up what I have on the Thyrann and post it on here somewhere. |
KRingway February 7, 2014 - 2:30am | Bossmoss - put it in a new thread and I'll add what I can to it in terms of sketches. The ones above are still a bit too fishy. It struck me the other day that they're straying towards being too much like Mon Calamari, so I think I need to make them look weirder... |
Ascent February 8, 2014 - 4:16pm | That Vrusk is the best I've seen, and I'm digging the Sathar. View my profile for a list of articles I have written, am writing, will write. jedion357 February 12, 2014 - 11:22pm | Just wrapped an acrylic painting that I've been working on its called "Destroyer of Worlds" A sathar destroyer, individually cannot destroy a world but because it is the single most popular class of ship in the sathar armada it truly has become the destroyer of worlds. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
AnimuX February 15, 2014 - 7:20pm | jedion: for some reason that scene reminds me a lot of Robotech Macross. :) |
jedion357 February 16, 2014 - 12:55am | jedion: for some reason that scene reminds me a lot of Robotech Macross. :) I'm ignorant of robotech, I just thought it would make a good scene so after finding a photo reference of a planet that i liked and painting it I drew the ship with a miniature on hand but also using some perspective tricks with a ruler and a point of origin on the paper, transfered the drawing to the canvas and started painting. the funny part was holding a flash light on the miniature in the same relationship as the star to see how the sunlight would interact with a 3D model and paint that. The background stars were tedious. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
KRingway February 16, 2014 - 4:27am | Jedion - are you aware of the 'toothbrush technique' for creating star fields with paint? |
jedion357 February 16, 2014 - 1:44pm |
I've used it for splatter effects in modelling, the problem was that I didnt think of stars till I had compsed and painted the separate elements of the planet and the ship. I have another black gessoed studio canvas the I'm considering for an image involving an assault scout and sathar fighters. I want either an asteroid in the middle ground or a gas giant in the background for that one. I think I'll do the stars first on that one. Jedion - are you aware of the 'toothbrush technique' for creating star fields with paint? I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
AnimuX February 16, 2014 - 4:01pm | @jedion: Here is a screencap from an episode of Robotech to illustrate. Your painting reminds me of scenes like this from the old anime series. :-) |
jedion357 February 16, 2014 - 4:16pm | Ah I see. what are the clouds in space around the planet? I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
AnimuX February 16, 2014 - 4:47pm | Ah I see. what are the clouds in space around the planet? Just an alien armada building up to a total of about 4 million ships before bombarding the Earth and nearly wiping out humanity. |
AnimuX March 20, 2014 - 11:26pm | OK. One more classic Saurian. This one in a more comic-book style pose. |
iggy March 20, 2014 - 11:58pm | Very nice. This give some of the feel of how the Saurians are motivated to get the Sathar. I see this guy as one who takes on Sathar agents and finds out where the Sathar are. I was just searching for SF images of the core fore to use as 2D representations of people in Sketchup. I'm drawing some buildings in Port Loren and need people to size the doors and such right. Can I use your images? -iggy |
AnimuX March 21, 2014 - 7:14am | Absolutely! Sounds like a great project for sketchup. Are you going to translate all of old game maps into 3d models? |
iggy March 21, 2014 - 10:43am | I did the Port Loren map. Check out the hitchhikers guide to the frontier project here on the site. I'm now detailing the PGC towers. -iggy |
jacobsar March 31, 2014 - 9:25am | Wow! Increadible art AnimuX! Reasonable men adapt to the world around them; unreasonable men make the world adapt to them. The world is changed by unreasonable men. Edwin Louis Cole |
