jedion357 January 24, 2013 - 8:28am | Page 20 of AD original rule book has the rules for swimming. Everybody swims for 1 hour free then loses 5 STA every half hour of continuous swimming after that. Do we like this rule? Should that apply to a character in full equipment? I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
JCab747 March 12, 2018 - 8:21am | OK. Here's this revision. Diving/Jumping into Water. Jumping into water can be dangerous. If a character hits the water horizontally – also called a “pancake” landing – from more than 5 meters, it would be like hitting the ground. Similarly, a character who randomly falls into the water would take falling damage. For example, a character falling 6 metersand lands on the water horizontally would suffer 1d5 + 1 points of damage (the first 5 meters will not count). An untrained character can jump or dive into the water from a distance of 10 meters without taking damage. Unless a Dralasite takes the time to form an air pocket in its body before entering the water (see swimming), it will not float. It can swim but will drown if knocked unconscious. Because Vrusk have rather large bodies, they must make a Dexterity check to properly line up for a dive, otherwise they will take half falling damage (roll any damage and divide the result by 2). Satharoids– Sathar and S’sessu – have worm-like, hydrostatically hardened bodies that makes them superior at diving. They have double the safe diving distance – up to 20 meters – before taking damage. Humma have double the safe diving distance – up to 20 meters – before taking damage, while Yazarians triple this distance to 30 meters due to their gliding ability. For each meter afterward, a character would take 1 point of damage. Characters with the Swimming skill can double their safe diving/jumping distance. Players can also use experience points toincrease their characters’ safe diving distances by 2 meters per experience point. For example, Humma who have the Swimming skill can now safely jump down 40 meters into water; Yazarians can glide and then dive down 60 meters without suffering damage.[1][1]The original Alpha Dawn rules had a section called “Falling, Jumping andDiving,” but no rules were provided for character diving. These guidelines arebased on a discussion that was on the starfrontiers.us website. (http://www.starfrontiers.us/node/7370) Joe Cabadas |
jedion357 March 12, 2018 - 4:17am | It looks like it won't be a Frontier Explorer magazine article given Tom Stephens announcement about WoTC's demands, but at least we can have something... while this website lasts. Yeah I'm in a bit of a funk since the word came down and "just write for Frontier Space" may not be the answer. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |

I can see them demanding that PDFs of the rules and maps should be taken down, but why kill off a fan magazine? What do they think is going to support their market? There isn't Dragon magazine anymore; no Ares magazine; nothing other than this, a few Facebook, Yahoo or Google groups. Joe Cabadas |

Oh, I understand. I can see them demanding that PDFs of the rules and maps should be taken down, but why kill off a fan magazine? What do they think is going to support their market? There isn't Dragon magazine anymore; no Ares magazine; nothing other than this, a few Facebook, Yahoo or Google groups. First, check whether said fan magazines use their copyrighted text or trademarked terms. The existing magazines make pretty liberal use of text and artwork owned by Wizards of the Coast. If they do, Wizards of the Coast is simply enforcing its rights. In the case of trademarks, they pretty much have to to protect the trademark. Then ask whether they're actually pulling magazines that don't violate their rights. The publisher of the magazine might just view this as an attack on the magazine itself, and shut down when he doesn't have to. Or contributors to the magazine might give up because they think the magazine is going to shut down anyway, and the publisher doesn't have any articles to publish. Wizards isn't trying to create a thriving ecosystem of Star Frontiers players seeking products. That market is long gone. They're simply turning their old properties into PDFs. This quiets criticism of old TSR fans who complained that their favorite game is no longer available (now it is) and might channel some of those old fans to look more kindly on Wizards and their current line of products. So... "what do they think is going to support their market?" Nothing; they're not looking for market support. |

JCab747 March 27, 2018 - 6:44am | Yes, I could not argue against that either. Joe Cabadas |
