Shadow Shack January 17, 2013 - 9:41pm | Wow, I have to say downloading was a lot more user friendly when it was on the SFman site. The Eorna heavy fighter deck plans were left out of the Liberation adventure... |
Ascent January 18, 2013 - 9:09am | 52 pages in 6 mos. It's a start. Shell's art is fantastic as usual. I see you couldn't find a replacement for my 'oh-so-terrible' paraglider image. My computer hasn't broken down from it so far. I love the new creatures and equipment. The original "Liberation of Volturnus" scenario is cool too. Thanks! At least I know it wasn't just me that found the new download format a bit tedious. Why the change? Will the prior 18 issues end up there as well or is this just a trial run? |
Ascent January 20, 2013 - 7:52am | The prior issues are already there. They just haven't taken down the downloads at starfrontiers.us. I can understand having them at RPGNow/DriveThruRPG, but it would be nice if they were posted to starfrontiersman.com first. TerlObar January 20, 2013 - 8:08am | Why the change? I can think of a couple reasons although I'm only guessing. 1) Bandwidth. If they make them available through DriveThruRPG/RPGNow then they don't have to worry about bandwidth costs to pay for large number of downloads if that is an issue with their hosting service. 2) Royalty percentages for their other products. DTRPG/RPGN has two different royalty tiers, an exclusive tier and a non-exclusive tier. Obviously the exclusive tier is higer (but only by 5%) and if they want to be able to take advantage of that then all their products have to be exclusively distributed through DTRPG/RPGN. Since they've made the Star Frontiesman a DWD Studios product instead of its own entity as it was originally, if they are distributing the magazine somewhere else besides DTRPG/RPGN then they can't qualify for the exculsive tier on all the Bare Bones stuff. 3) By distributing directly through DTRPG/RPGN they can collect names and e-mail addresses of everyone that downloads it who don't explicitly opt out of sharing their information with publishers and can also use tools on the site to email anyone that downloaded it that hasn't explicitly opted out of receiving e-mails. So by distributing through that site they can leverage the tools for announcements and marketing. And I notice that they didn't even put an annoucement on the Star Frontiersman web site saying 19 was available yet. Even if the announcement pointed to the new distrubution location. So anyone checking that site for updates (or subscribed to the front page RSS feet like I am) doesn't even know it exists. As Ascent said, it would be nice if it was there as well and wouldn't be hard to add but that's up to Larry and Bill. Ad Astra Per Ardua! Ascent January 20, 2013 - 1:26pm | For number 2, they will need to take down the starfrontiersman downloads page at starfrontiersman.com. TerlObar January 20, 2013 - 1:46pm | Yes, they would have to remove the download links there. I don't really think that was a consideration. Most likely it's just that they're doing all there other stuff that way so they decided to do the Star Frontiersman as well. Ad Astra Per Ardua! Karxan January 29, 2013 - 12:35am | Just to clarify for everyone, the reason the SFman was posted to RPGNow to help with tracking purposes. I did not post it as I do not have the access right now, but I will have it posted on the SFman site and the next issues also. and a head up, I am working on finishing issue #20 right now. So very soon you should be seeing it. |
