Knight Hawks skills

Maybe I'm not reading something right, but KH seems to say that you can't get any of the starship skills until your character reaches tech level 6.  Although, I see some sample characters and even some NPC s in modules at have skills from knight hawks and less that technician 6.  Am I missing something?  What is the rule, and how does everyone handle it?
Thanks

Uh, I think he said physicist....not psychiatrist.  Hehe

Oops!

I hear and read a lot about physics, but much of it goes over my head like a low-fling jumbo-jet. I have a basic understanding of some of the high-end or theoretical concepts from a Mr. Wizard point-of-view, but no working understanding of them.

Isn't a pull-pusher a propeller plane with blades in the front and back?
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

I thought it was one of those truly gifted individuals that manages o try to push and pull a door open at the same time.
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

It takes two hands to do that.  That takes twice the brain power.

I never had too much trouble with having higher base skills to qualify for spacer skills (just not That high), with the exception of the gunnery skills. Exactly how does being able to shoot an autopistol make you a better shot with a torpedo or assault rocket?

Using the WW2 analogy, air force gunners did spend a couple of weeks shooting shotguns to teach them how to lead targets and estimate range and speed on an instinctive, "muscle-memory" level, but I don't see how that would help operate the control panel on a laser battery. I can't even see a good computer skill being of much use. Even programming seekers would only need a very basic robotics skill to load any of a dozen pre-made "chase the pretty light" programs into the seeker's tiny little robo-brain.

Given the nature of space combat, gunnery skills should not be limited to just high weapon skills. Targeting systems do not work like an arcade game! There is a lot of math involved, and the weapon systems have robotic systems to control things. If anything, it would require some knowledge of robotics, and maybe some computing - to program the targeting system.

Not only that, you need to be more proficient with the slug throwers than the rocket guns. I always wondered if the writers meant that to be the other way around...
