A feature of Old Kingdom Egyptian culture was to build a tomb and a cenotaph (literally empty grave commemorating the dead) in both the north and the south of Egypt. Its debated which was the actual tomb and which the cenotaph. It your fantasy rpg game throw a cenotaph at tye players who are looking for a tomb could even have a prophesy concerning the openning of the tomb but no one believes the prophesy because the cenotaph was mistaken for the tomb and thus the prophesy didnt come true when the cenotaph was openned.

Would the empty tomb have the traps and treasures of the real one?
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

In the case of Egyptian ones I believe the answer is yes that it had grave goods and offerings that were intended to aid the dead in the afterworld. However, Old Kingdom Egypt is a ways back, we're talking about the 1st and 2nd dynasty having cenotaphs and to relate that to history King Tut was 18th dynasty and Ramses was 20th. and they were both New Kingdom of which we have the most materail and detial. I just like the idea of a twist for the standard fantasy RPG adventure- PCs quest for the tomb of King Dude the Coolest and find his cenotaph. All is not lost as the actual tomb has the same layout as the cenotaph but perhaps not the same traps.

In a security measure King Dude has actually hidden his most prised treasures in the cenotaph against the depredations of grave robbers. So the risen lich king Dude does not bother to slay the PCs that awakened him because he's anxious to get to the cenotaph and recover the silver surf board of shadow and ether.

I just happened to be reading The Art and Architecture of Ancient Egypt while the kids played at the park today. I think the woman that joined me on that bench became irritated with me because I didn't pay any attention to her- she actually turned her back to me and sat sideways after a bit then left for another bench. That was weird.
