Sargonarhes November 2, 2012 - 7:38pm | Eastern Great Lakes, just a little windier than usual, lots of rain. But faired pretty well. In every age, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same. |
TerlObar November 2, 2012 - 7:58pm | I'm out in the Utah desert so I didn't have to deal with the weather but since I actually work out of Greenbelt, MD at NASA Goddard, I kind of had an easy couple of days Monday and Tuesday since the computers were all shut down over the weekend and the Goddard campus was closed. I still had to work while they got the days off since I'm off-site but I guess that makes up for not having to deal with the weather. A few of my co-workers lost power but for the most part everyone I know from living back there for five years (and who I have contact with) seems to have pulled through without incident. OnceFarOff November 2, 2012 - 8:40pm | I'm an hour outside of NYC. A lot of people lost power, but we were outside of the main impact zone. Most folks in my area have power back, although the people coming up from NJ are causeing long gas lines here. Next week my church is sending some people down to NJ where the real damage is. We kind of dodged the bullet. We helped some people here remove trees from their houses, but no flooding like down south. |

jedion357 November 2, 2012 - 8:55pm | Yeah, but not the way you might think. Every time this stuff happend and MEMA like FEMA but limited to MA and the local National Guard activate and our company has the contract to feed them in Eastern MA. It means lots of extra hours for the drivers. I discovered just how bad my new vehcile (GMC Savanah) handles on a wet highway and high winds. Combine that with drowsiness after 10 hours of work and I hit a Duncan Donuts parking lot to sleep for 30 minutes. Its lousy for the bad stuff that happens to folks but I end up making money each disaster delivering hot food or box lunches to the troops. Biggest gripe is that Massholes come racing up behind you at speeds appropriate for clear weather and fly around you while the wind is doing its best to fishtail the wonderful GMC product you're driving. Karxan November 3, 2012 - 12:27am | Well, I am farther away than TerlObar. Out in western Washington. So safe here. Just non stop rain for a week. Someone said it was like the storm worked it's way around to us, but they were shut down because someone pointed out two things, 1) no storm could work its way around like that, and 1) our storms out here do not compare in anyway to "Sandy". Oh well, not everyone thinks the same. My company is coming up with donations for our factory in Bordentown, NJ though. At least one employee lost everything, including their home. A lot of people need food from what we were told too. So off to buy canned goods this weekend for the donations. |

One friend of mine had a bungalow down on the shore that had been in the family for years. They alredy had the family meeting and decided to sell the property off once they demolish what's left of the place. |
OnceFarOff November 4, 2012 - 4:29pm | A bunch of folks from my church and a church down in Florida got together supplies today: generators, gas, food, water, blankets, clothes and are bringing them down to south Jersey tomorrow. It's going to be pretty cold the next few nights and a lot of people have lost homes, or still have no electric or heat. It was really cool seeing our community come together to help out the people in NJ. |
OnceFarOff November 4, 2012 - 8:02pm | OFO, That is Awesome. I tell you, we have a great group of people at our church. It's a shame the "church" today is known more for asking for money than for helping people. The way I see it, if a church isn't meeting needs in the community, they shouldn't be tax-exempt. The original purpose of tax exemption was based on the presupposition that the church was taking care of the poor, the orphans, widows and destitute. Anyways, we're just glad to be able to do something to make a difference. |
Karxan November 5, 2012 - 1:03am | OFO, My Dad feels the same way. He is a retired juvinile corrections officer and a retired pastor. He and I were talking about how the church should be the single most effective community service in any community. Food, clothes, and other help. He actually started a food bank and was getting local business to donate food they could not sell but was going to expire and was able to use it before the expiration. I think anyone could find creative ways to give to the community if they just tried. |
jedion357 November 5, 2012 - 4:55am | I use to have a somewhat radical pastor that advocated for churches losing their tax exempt status if they were not doing some social ministery. Ie food kitchen or pantry or clothes pantry or suicide councelling or battered woman's shelter. However, you'd simply get those churches that already dont do that stuff gaming the system by putting food in a closet and calling it a food pantry when its really nothing of the sort. I think it would be a bad idea just from the perspective of the power to tax is the power to destroy but like I said he was a little radical. Got back from NJ today since there's another storm hitting the NE tonight, and I needed to make sure the little ones are ok. Heading back tomorrow. TOTAL CHAOS is the only way to describe the scene down there on the Jersey Shore. I grew up in S. Florida and have seen hurricanes my whole life but have never seen anything like what I saw this week. I'm not ashamed to say it got me pretty choked up seeing all these people who have lost their homes or everything in it. It's truly a miserable scene. |
OnceFarOff November 9, 2012 - 1:10pm | Just got back from NJ again. Check out this house I saw this afternoon in Union City NJ: |
