bossmoss October 5, 2012 - 7:22pm | Humma have prehensile tails. So, many years ago, I thought... are there kangaroos with prehensile tails? It turns out that there are - tree kangaroos. After studying them for a while, I decided that it made a lot more sense for the Humma to have descended from a similar arboreal creature. After some investigation, I discovered lots of other Humma-like creatures with prehensile tails. The Kinkajou: Very nice example of Humma tails, hands and general body shape. The only difference is that kinkajou are incredibly sweet. The Binturong: Scruffy, surly, and it lays around sleeping on tree limbs all day. Very Humma-like. The Fossa: Probably the best one. It is a quasi-feline predator that crouches like a Humma. All of these creatures have prehensile tails, and might be great inspirations or examples for players who just think they look like kangaroos, and don't look any deeper. |
jedion357 October 7, 2012 - 3:19pm | I like the binturong and the fossa but this think you need to mix in one part kangaroo for the jumping still good reasoning on the prehensile tail I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
bossmoss October 10, 2012 - 6:07pm | Absolutely! Their powerful legs are one of their best features! |
jedion357 October 10, 2012 - 6:12pm | Plus they have some canine/feline features as well. Carnivorous teeth? Very likely. I seriously doubt they are vegetarians. Their name for the sathar is "meat" - i dont think that they are vegetarians. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
bossmoss October 10, 2012 - 6:19pm | Exactly. Humma are mean suckers. |

|
bossmoss December 6, 2012 - 5:40pm | This is a fossa. The sleek fur resembles that of the original Humma illustration. Notice the hind legs - strong, but not kangaroo-like in appearance. The face is neither feline nor canine, but somewhere in between. This creature is obviously a predator. This shot shows the fossa's long prehensile tail. It uses the tail to hang on to tree branches. |
bossmoss December 6, 2012 - 5:47pm | This is a binturong. It is generally surly and grumpy. It shaggy fur gives it an unkempt appearance. It spends most of its time sleeping on tree branches. Notice how its tail holds on to the branch while it is sleeping. |
bossmoss December 6, 2012 - 5:51pm | This is a kinkajou. It has the most Humma-like appearance of the animals described here. The only difference is that a kinkajou is CUTE, which is not very Humma-like! |
bossmoss December 6, 2012 - 5:53pm | OK, here's an angry kinkajou. That makes it more like a Humma! |
bossmoss December 6, 2012 - 5:55pm | The tail is the main feature that makes the kinkajou like a Humma. All Humma should theoretically be able to do this: |
bossmoss December 6, 2012 - 5:57pm | The main purpose of these images is to help players (and GMs) visualize what a Humma's body is like, and what it can do - without evoking the much-hated kangaroo analogy. |

I like this as a drawing reference. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
