jedion357 May 29, 2012 - 5:49am | I was going to post this in the Core Four project but I though my initial question would get a better response in the wider audience of the site then to just poll the membership of that project. Has anyone played/used AD&D's Oriental Adventures by Gygax? I was just cruising 4shared.com looking for OOP TSR materials and on a lark downloaded Oriental Adventures to flip through the PDF. On page 35 is the chapter on honor. there is a method to determine family and PC honor and actions in game affect those scores up and down. Its actually fairly brief and looks easy enough to use. I was wondering if it would be worth developing/converting it to be used for our favorite aliens amoung the core four. 1. Does anyone remember playing Oriental Adventures? What was your impression of the honor rules and impact on the game? 2. has anyone seen a similar system in another game? how did that work? If you need to check out a copy I used TSR as a search criteria to find the document. or you could try this link: http://www.4shared.com/office/hsgfSeDj/Oriental_Adventures__TSR_2018_.htm i would bet that Oriental Adventures is also on Scribd.com too if you already had an account there I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Bilygote May 29, 2012 - 6:43pm | The last time I played OA it was in 88. I ran a Samurai. I really don't remember much about the honor system but I would be interested in seeing something developed for SF, though I don't know if I consider Yazirians to nessicarily be in the same vein as Samurai. |
jedion357 May 29, 2012 - 7:18pm | True and the honor system actually played different for the different classes with Samurai having the greatest fluctuation in honor. it would be optional and I think it would play differently for yazirians with different backgrounds. for example Yazirians from Hentz would have different actions that impacted their honor if at all. I think that, like the different tables for how honor is impacted by PC actions could be set up in different tables and the play decides at character generation what table his character will be bound to. Perhaps at most their could be a table for Conservative, Moderate and Liberal clans. Getting banished by a liberal clan would really require screwing up by the numbers. At first I only envisioned one set of standards but I think have 2-3 sets of standards as proposed could work. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Shadow Shack May 30, 2012 - 1:47am | I have a OA book (it's missing four pages) that I've yet to peruse. Sounds like a reasonable source though, I may have to change that book's status. |
jedion357 May 30, 2012 - 2:47am | I have a OA book (it's missing four pages) that I've yet to peruse. Sounds like a reasonable source though, I may have to change that book's status. I was hoping that someone in our circle had played with these rules and had an idea as to their playability. but the fact that they only fill up a few pages of the book and most of that is tables, I guessing that its fairly workable. Perhaps we should start a thread in the Core Four project and tinker with this? I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
rattraveller May 30, 2012 - 4:56am | Never did Oriental Adventures however I did play Demons from White Wolf which had a "sin" system. The idea being your character was a Fallen Angel who escaped from Hell. The player decided whether they wanted their character to be going totally evil or if they wanted to try and redeem themselves and try to be good. Actions taken by the character raised or lowered their sin score and their reputation in the Demon community and how other Demons interacted with them. Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
