BBC "Outcasts"

For those of you who have Net Flicks, I highly recommend a BBC television series named OUTCASTS. This unfortunately short lived science fiction series features a intriqing stroy line and some good character development. I just finished watching the first (and only) season. I was a little doubtful at first but after a few episodes I did begin to see some real potential in this show. Like Firelfly and Space Above & Beyond the network executives decided to axe it due to questionable ratings. It is sad to see that people so prefer reality television over science fiction that challenges its viewers to use their minds and imaginations. Anyway, I recommend you check it out, you may find some good adventure ideas in its storyline. Without giving too much away, I do think a good tie in would be for the plaque planets.

BBC being government controlled and not like American strickly for profit networks has seemed to be more willing to take on sci-fi products over the years. I remember really liking Max Headroom back when my AD box set still had its new car smell. Of course the 900 pound gorilla in the room of British sci-fi is Dr. WHO.
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

First Outcasts had alot of potential but was cancelled after the first season. Similar to Earth 2 and Terra Nova. Still there are alot of story ideas especially in the subplots. GMs go there now and watch.

@Jed 900 pound Gorilla? C'mon man in the Sci Fi world there are three galaxies; Star Trek, Star Wars and Doctor Who. These three franchises have pretty much dominated what people think of Sci-Fi for quite awhile now. It is funny that Doctor Who is actually the oldest of the three but in America the hardest to find.
I like so many others discovered Doctor Who in the mid 70s while channel surfing (considering we only had 7 channels at the time it didn't take long) and have been hooked ever since. Now if only they would do some more Red Dwarf and Torchwood. (Fun Fun Fun in the Sun Sun Sun)
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

BBC has always made television that is(in my mind) superior to most of american television.  Actually, the three main shows I am hooked on right now are merlin, doctor who, and sherlock.  I reccomend sherlock the most.  It is a modern-day retelling of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classics.
Tell me, have you ever heard of a time lord?  A species that was said to exist a long time ago.  Legend says they are older than even the mythical Tetrachs.  Maybe, on some glorious day, a survivor of their apocolypse will visit the frontier.  There is nothing we can do now.  Nothing but sit and wait.

@ RatT I beleive I specified in British TV it was Dr Who, Star Trek and Star Wars are considered American. I don't see how they fit into a discussion of British Sci-fi or were we already thread jacking this thread? What is your point in making the point to label these three fantasies? On some level 99.99% of all sci-fi is a fantasy of some sort or another including Star Frontiers.

There is a religious person (he seems like a mentalist to me but I don't have proof yet) and the man-n-charge that does not want religion introduced in his speech to calm the people at the point of crisis (Epi 3, 29:00).

I had immediate thoughts of a yazirian priest wanting to address the clans before impending doom and the Head of Clans not allowing any Family of One overtones in his speech.

Rechecking thread title. OK we started with Outcasts and then moved on to BBC in general and then I mentioned about the big three in Sci Fi because all three have had huge influences on world culture not just the country of origin.

Oh while Star Trek is American and Doctor Who is British; Star Wars was originally filmed  and partially produced in London (scenes in Tunisia not withstanding) and many of the actors were from the Big Island. So maybe Star Wars is not so much American.

OH and I didn't say FANTASIES I said FRANCHISES.
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

I looked at Outcasts, and saw there was only one season.  Does the series have an ending or did it just stop?  I hate it when a series just stops.  That's why I plan on starting Firefly soon.

"Hello, Traaz.  I see you forgot my credits.  You have 24 hours to live.  Say goodbye to your family, tell off your boss, do what you want.  Just kidding.  Did you really think I would let you do that?  Goodbye, Mr.Traaz." -Uknown

The series had a season 1 ending but left plenty of questions unanswered for season 2 which never happened so prepare for disappointment.

The disappointment is in the network and not the show. The show had a lot of promise.

OOPS I really goofed up. To all of you I insulted I deeply apologize. I forgot that Doctor Who is NOT a British show. It is Welsh. Which as everyone knows is as far from British as you can get and not leave the island.

Yes and BBC stands for Welsh Broadcasting? Seriously? Rattraveller, you've single handedly tried to incite a flame war in this thread by nit picking things I've written for no good reason. Is it that you have a problem with me personally or are you just abrasive to everyone all the time? I'm not the first person to comment on your condescending tone, probably just the first to comment publicly.

Actually I have agreed with you on more posts than not, so calm down. Next while BBC does stand for British Broadcasting Company; Doctor Who is filmed in Cardiff the capital of Wales.

The island of Great Britain contains three main areas: Wales, England and Scotland so anyone from any of these three areas is technically British they are also Welsh, English and Scottish. Sorta like Americans are also New Yorkers, Californians and Floridians.

Abrasive no but I do point things out. I do not attack anyone. My last post was joking and accurate and now I'm done.
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

Speaking of BBC Sci-fi, one of my favorites was Blake's 7.  We had no cable TV out in the boonies where I  grew up, but I was able to watch the whole series as it was aired on LPB (Louisiana Public Broadcasting) channel every weekend back in the 80's.  I haven't seen an episode since then so I'm sure that I'm being a bit too nostalgic.  It was obvious cheap effects at times but I was so starved for something like it that it was great.

And back on  topic, I didn't catch Outcasts at the beginning when it was airing on BBC America but I was intrigued enough to keep watching.  A friend an I were just talking about it this week (he also found it on Netfilx).  I didn't realize it was canceled.  Figures...

@rattraveller: your joke about British, Welsh, could be dangerous over in GB. They take that very serious. Smile Just like one time in the service, a young Airman said that one of our sgt's was from Mexico. Now, this young airman was from Texas and very white and a redneck(litterally) and married to beautiful hispanic woman. The sgt took offense because he was from Niceragua not Mexico. All of us very unlucky airman on lunch in the breakroom got a 30 min lecture on the different hispanic background of Latin America. As you might have guessed, the young airman's neck got even redder.Smile. The airman was not me thankfully. Anyway...

As for Outcast, I had recently put it in my que in Netflix. With everyones positive feedback, I cannot wait to watch it this weekend. I am still trying to finish Earth 2. It's OK, but I have not had the time to finish it. I think I will switch to Outcast for now.

So I finally finished Earth 2 and Outcast. I did enjoy both, for different reasons.

I liked the gritty direction Outcast was going. It seemed that they did well to include modified humans in the story line. Lots of different dynamics going on to exploit. I was sad to see Jamie Bamber die in the first episode. I loved him BSG. I am not sure if it was a good idea for the world mind/entity in the story, but they never got that far with it, so who knows.

Earth 2 was good for the most part. I thought they ran a few of the stories out too quick. I did not like the psycho android soldier story arch. It seemed they really tried hard to put more and more problems into the story because they couldn't figure out where they were going. I really liked the family relationship building they began within the group.

I remember watching Earth 2 on TV as ot released. Loved the arrival on planet in the first episode. Liked the family dynamics as well. Loved the fact that the actor who was the creepy bad ass in highlander was a lead character but also a good guy too. BUT..... i remember that as the show went on it began to feel like the writers were like, "What can we come up with now?" And it seems the show was all over the place. Still the evac of the ship and landing on the planet as simple as that story is was one of my favorite sci-fi scenes from the '80s. No blowing up a space station and killing millions because that voice in your head tells you too. No disobeying orders, stealing a milotary ship, blowing it up, coming back in command of an enemy ship and getting thanked for it.
