rattraveller February 15, 2012 - 2:39pm | Here is a little writing project for youse guys. It deals with background stories or the thing the players always seem to forget to think of. In this case we have two NPCs a Vrusk and a Vimh who just like in the movie Trading Places have switched their basic roles. The Vimh is rich and successful while the Vrusk is down and out. This is justified from the racial write ups which state: Alpha Dawn rule book Vrusk adventurers, however, do not belong to a company. Some are independent businessmen, some are company employees who were fired and some are just too rebellious to put up with company rules. Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
thespiritcoyote February 17, 2012 - 4:47pm | Having a form of -Vrusk Delirium- he suffers from a difficulty in the typical comprehension ability of normal Vrusk, and has become an artist (main mediums: painter, songwriter) producing works that cause other Vrusk emotions they find disturbingly simple, and seemingly expressive of a certain innate disunity of solitude... or put in Vruskan mild vocabulary... distressingly insane. Humans enjoy the artistic vision because they actually comprehend the social connection seeking that is innate to an individual mind! Dralasite find it merit-ably amusing to debate with alternating expression of prefrence about the artistic and social philosophies giving in the chosen mediums. Yazirian find within his works a certain element of inspired motivation reflective of cosmos balances, comes from the rambled cacophony and stimulating visual brutality. Vimh Games Unlimited - is owned by a computer savvy entrepreneur and software developer who has produced the frontiers last eight top-selling video games - the most recent four titles were produced independently under this new company's trademark. dedicated to his craft with an uncharacteristic singularity of purpose, an attachment and fondness for sharing entertainment gives him a certain detatched and socially-inept eccentric flair in the eyes of most humans... (and even many Vimh) his breadth of logic and symmetry in coding and mathematics, and his success in entrepreneurial endevors has vaulted him to the top of many Vrusk social circles, as the "token alien" who displays hope that not all of the inhabitants of the universe are crippled illogical and chaotic... his most recent studies into psychological ludology, philosophical narratology, and social interactivity come from these endeavors of creating games that cross multiple xeno-psych paradigms, has caused him to be a celebrated member of many parties as guest speaker to the enlightenment of many Dralsite skoa and fraternity. Background connection, content of the most recently successful games was due to the use of intellectual property that was not contractually provided, but available through friendly social contact, while tenants of a low-status communal studio-arcology converted from an abandoned warehouse by a small low-status skoa of outgoing Dralasites. bitter friendly rivals. The skoa of Dralasites who actually claim sub-governance of the communal multi-species mini-arcology, are frequently entertained by the interactions of the non-Dralasite tenants... and these two in particular have recently become favorites of past-times in social inter-play scenes... (think of something sort of like a disorganized Improvisational Prank Theater & Philosophical Debate Race Track as a casual sport they engage in rather naturally, but have no real ground-rules, or even commentary about to acknowledge the past-time, that would be understood by non-Dralasites. Equate it in most simple terms to "people-watching"... but with casual non-monetary side-bets, open cheating by social manipulations, and elevated social status for both the "debate-winners" and the "example-horses"... just for participating.) ---------- a character background exercise? Oh humans!! rattraveller February 17, 2012 - 5:47am | Like it, cause crazy Vrusk are always fun. Can picture him wildly flailing his arms and covered in multi-colored splotches of paint while talking to the neatly dressed Vimh. Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |

Or he puts the canvas on the floor and dips each of his eight feet in a different color paint before walking or vrusk dancing on the canvas. NOTE TO SELF: go check the thread on vrusk singing, dance and Tai Chi. Like it, cause crazy Vrusk are always fun. Can picture him wildly flailing his arms and covered in multi-colored splotches of paint while talking to the neatly dressed Vimh. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
thespiritcoyote February 17, 2012 - 5:53pm | thanks, it was late... I cleaned up my origional thoughts now... I think... Good, I like the Ti'Yagong-Tu tie-in... that was where I was thinking too... as a social-reject from participation in a sodality due to the non-Vrusk normalcy inherent of his condition... his "song" becomes one of solitary visions and someone culturally abandoned -; from a perspective of real "disconnected insanity" -; rather than being a well adjusted song of solidarity and balanced group cohesion, (to the unhealthy human, but healthy Vruskan extreme of an exclusion of self and personal desire for the hive/whole/one)... but, while in human terms he is actually rather "normal"... he is an afflicted mind, and likely will leave the world as another tragic-artist legacy... Only a Vrusk could understand such a divergence from a healthy mind, and his citizenship in a World Government that is Human dominated, and given to Human expectations of normalcy, protects his "human rights" to such an unfortunate insanity without aid and therapy forced on him... and thus keeps him poor in both economic and social Vruskan needs. Further being exploited for fun and profit, by what would be urbanite lower-status individuals -; who not only have no psychological frame-work to understand the mental disease of an alien mind... but are also -; benefiting enough from the casual exploitations not to notice his afliction, his condition is likely to only worsen. The Vimh becomes a real business-rat... the socially depraved, self aggrandizing, selfish user... not because he is such a person inside, but because his personal drive takes focus in his mind before there is room for noticing any lack of understanding, or involving himself in the attaining of real comprehenion, within this advanced star-faring civilization's "social rules" ... he succeeds, and becomes lost in the success, he works his way like a person falling through the cracks upwards... and this fast-track is in it's own way putting a distancing from any normality of his own people's "urban slums" culture, "nuclear-brood" family-life, and "comparative primitive" mental frame of reference... and when finally the roof-blows off the top... he will be a truly lost uncultured savage amongst the backdrop of a civilized high-technology world he has no basis for comparison to understand... a tribeless wanderer, truly lost in space... But at the moment -; and in the perpetual-now his primitive mind does consider worthy of focus-; all is well, and all is good, as he is an arcane wizard being celebrated by angels, and lifted to ever higher-achievements... success is become it's own drug, and the primitive mind can ignore lots of cultural disparity - it is as just another part of the unknown ways of the more enlightened beings. ...the Rocketpunk Xeno-fiction genre aesthetic... but quite the role-playing potential I think... Oh humans!! We discover a galactic community filled with multiple species of aliens, and the first thing we think about is "how can we have sex with them?". ~ anymoose, somewhere on the net... so... if you square a square it becomes a cube... if you square a cube does it become an octoid? |
jedion357 February 17, 2012 - 5:57pm | Good, gods, spiritcoyote! I don't know what to say. Love the turn of phrase "falling through the cracks upward." I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
thespiritcoyote February 18, 2012 - 6:57pm | I am checking my "facts" on characterizing the Vimh life-experience... (as if I do not have enough xeno-perspective in my limited insignificantly human noggin...) What does it mean to be Vimh? No History, No Culture, No real or imagined concern for continuity... Eat, Breed, Sleep, Defend... Social Animals with Developed Awareness... Base and Instictual at an extreme that is truly alien to Human quantification. Not per-se anti-social, not considerable as immersed in base depravity and bestial desire in any human notion of the terms... but hardly concerned with organized civilization, or systematic taboos... to barrow a line from Billy Idol... "no religion at all." - in thematics the entire song "Wasteland" comes through in some metaphorical perspective of Vimh awareness, but in an innate way, that is - with an internally unrecognized innocence given to the comparison. Sophist and spiritual they are not... but neither are they shallow unintelligent dullards, or irreverent libertine naves... neither fully equatable as simple superstitious and unrefined, nor in any imiginable sense are they civilized in cosmopolitan manners and thought... Primitive aloofs yet industriously savvy, independent survivalists. Neither an anarchistic nor governed philosophy is of concern, they neither recognize nor dismiss authority... common goals are centered around only the base needs of individual biological continuance, and to each their own independence and vices be left alone. Children are fed and guarded, but equally tossed in the deep-water to sink or swim... and easily left behind to fend for themselves if they can't keep up in migrations. Proof of adulthood is proof of child-bearing capability and merit-able upon provision of shared sustenance... not on studious works or abstract aesthetics, no culture or improvisation is valuable... peerage is a matter of "can you breed?" and "can you sustain?" While status elevation is given to those who have the most sustainability in these simple needs alone, the methods of achieving such sustainability -; whether by force of might, innovations of intellect, or concurrence and social machination -; is of no concern to the hive nor individual. They are not "poor" or "unprivileged" or even "second class" in their own perspective... for they have no basis for understanding such comparisons. From their perspective, when you come with shiny bobbles and words of pressed authority to remove them from their obvious staked claim of rest and communal food stores, they are not the unintelligent uncivilized nave... you are. No one had any claim over the empty dwellings, and you cannot "own" what you cannot eat, hold on your person, or curently stand-on... such thoughts are ludicrous, laughable, and contemptibly against any "normal" frame of thought. "So I, want you, move should?" {take four steps} "There be, that place have left I, space you for is open... take as free, be let be!" Oh humans!! thespiritcoyote February 18, 2012 - 7:02pm | Our Vimh launches his success on "piracy" not because he is a thief that stole "intellectual property" but because he used one unmeritable thing to build some other unmeritable thing, that in turn gave him some honours of recognizable food allocations and access to indisputable possession of storage space provision... his success in turn filled his eyes with the wonders of lavish banquettes in his honour, these people... these aliens of strange ways... show him enlightenments that prove (to him) they are elevated beings, and he is learning their ways (incorrectly as through filtered perspectives of his own innate psychology and devising)... He is raised above his own people -; who cannot share in understanding what he has learned for they don't have the curiosity to care -; by these beings of greater subsistence, these providers of unending sustainability... these angelic enlightened beings and masters of the four star-heavens... Aloof and primitive, but not naive, industrious and socially savvy, he becomes a student as if of mystical cosmologies, he raises a temple to his own pursuits, becomes proficient at accessing the ethereal world of information, and attracts followers to his own ways, for they are also curious of his knowledge and with that he finds a new hive of community, a new feasting brood to share a table with... Every board meeting is a banquette in his corporation. yes, a good metaphor, thanks you! (_ _)" "...falling upwards, through the cracks of social stratification, and the architectures of the governed..." Vimh Down Below Station So, do I have the Vimh experience in focus? am I missing something? Does anyone have a different take on this? Did I Hijack this thread and cause everyone to scamper away? rattraveller February 19, 2012 - 7:08am | You have done a great analysis for your character. Really like the board meeting banquets and would love to be the caterer for this meetings. Will post my take on a couple soon and maybe submit them to the magazine. Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
jedion357 February 19, 2012 - 7:57am | Actually He has done a great service in our understanding of the vimh. I'd love to see a Psycology of the Vimh article; sort of like the Ecology of the ____________ from Dragon magazines (do they still do the ecology articles in Dragon?) I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
rattraveller February 19, 2012 - 8:23am | I think the question is do they still do the Dragon magazine. Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
jedion357 February 19, 2012 - 9:16am | I thought they transfered to electronic publication to ape the success of the Star Frontiersman. I think the question is do they still do the Dragon magazine. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
thespiritcoyote February 19, 2012 - 4:08pm | ok... thanks... I may have exhausted the muse I can pour out of this font until I get some bread to chew on... to phrase in a metaphor smorgasbord... XD food on the mind ... I should eat something O_O A set of Ecology of's are always handy. Oh humans!!
