Anonymous January 8, 2012 - 12:39pm | In federation year 2 the newly organized UPF desired a census of the inhabitants it was sworn to protect. Each government (and corp owned system) was responsible for creating census data and maps. It took 3 years to complete. I got the idea from the 1870's American census. Check out these beautiful maps, get inspired, come up with stories and adventures. |
rattraveller January 8, 2012 - 1:29pm | Quick question what are the census questions? Recently read the Alabama 1830 census and it only asked 1)Head of Household, 2)Number of whites-Male, 3)Number of whites-Female, 4) Number of blacks-Slave, 5)Number of blacks-Free Thinking the Frontier census would need a little bit more. Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |

Interesting idea, filling out % of which race would generate new background material. I would simply do a new version of the AD Star Map with a little box by each system with %s of each each. While a system like Yast would be 98-99% Yazirian and 1-2% other a system like Araks because of policies of the Family of One would be pretty much the only system that was 100% of the primary colonizing race. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |

rattraveller January 9, 2012 - 6:59am | Thinking of the movie Outland (Sean Connery) would you consider the miners on that moon to be indentured servants or contract workers and where would the line be drawn. It is not like they had alot of choices once they got to the moon in living or working conditions. Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
w00t (not verified) January 9, 2012 - 8:32am | I vaguely remember that movie but I think there would be a mix of both. Desperate workers wanting to cash in on a 2-year tour and indentured servants to a corporation (or government). In the Firefly episode "Jaynestown", the Canton factory settlement had (I believe) 100% indentured servants that didn't appear to be paid enough to get out of that mud hole, literally. With that said, I imagine the frontier would have laws governing indentured servitude. |
jedion357 January 9, 2012 - 9:09am | I loved Jaynestown! Great episode. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
rattraveller January 10, 2012 - 6:47am | I agree the people in Jaynestown were indentured servants in the vain of living in a factory town system which is designed to keep them in the town forever as a source of cheap labor keeping the owners rich. But indentured servants at least in colonial times had a contract with a set time limit and at the end of it were given certain items such as a musket, a horse, a plow and even up to land along with their freedom. Let us categorize. Slaves--no chance of freedom, Factory town workers---little chance of getting out,---Indentured Servants---set time limit not much freedom, Contract workers---set time limit and some power to renegotiate, Military members---set time, no freedom to negotiate and great danger, Regular workers---FREEDOM but you might not get to eat if you quit alot of jobs. Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
