jedion357 December 30, 2011 - 6:25am | artist cooks up a soup of nanites with some parameters programed and they go to work building artwork from the molecule up. Like fractile art but very 3D, highly detailed and textured. Its all the rage in Port Loren with many galleries hosting shows by nanite artist. jedion357 December 30, 2011 - 6:34am | Lossend has an anual Nanite Sand Castle Competition sponsored by Tachton Instruments. It dates back to the early days of practical nanite technology where experiements were run with nanites building sand castles since it involved no chemical material change and the nanites were largely composed of silicon themselves. Timeon Sarfari Ltd. invested heavily in nanites after they were taught to build myelin muscle fibers and suddenly moving models were possible, with Jurrasic Park like creations were possible. Star Law and Ground Fleet have reportedly used this tech to create training constructs of sathar creatures but this rumor has never been confirmed nor denied by the appropriate authorities. rattraveller December 30, 2011 - 8:53am | The social elite of Gran Quivera have an annual Nanite Crystalline Competition and Art Show where beings use nanites to create artworks with crystals and out of crystals. Categories range from the Juvenile Gem Construction to Model Building Construction to Self Moving Item among the several dozen open and invitational judged events. The participants can be rather competitive but that is considered low brow and the idea is to encourage innovation and extravagance. Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
jedion357 December 30, 2011 - 9:17am | The latest must have product to hit the Gran Quivera jewelers market is habits built diamonds with a 3D hollow space in the center in the shape of a heart, a persons or some other sentimental item asked for by the customer. In addition, jewelers are now carrying certified natural gem stones. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |

You say that because the last tech who worked on you tried to save time by using nanites and you were forced th have hot oil enemas to flush them all out. ;) Nanites opens a can of worms in the SF'verse, much like artificial gravity does. Just a thought. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
AZ_GAMER December 30, 2011 - 4:27pm | Why does Artifical gravity open a can of worms for SF? I just considered that a decent rule hadn't be approached yet because it wasnt in the original setting. You might be able to tie this in to the thread on 3d priniting |

Ascent December 30, 2011 - 10:27pm | Rules-wise, nanites have not been proven to be able to make complex solid structures, so nanites in Star Frontiers should not be allowed to do such. They also haven't been proven to be able to significantly modify tissue structures or to do more than the one instruction for which they're designed. So using them as body modifiers is also out. Currently, nanites are used only for simple repairs and replacing missing cell parts. They are not "programmable" in the sense of computer programs. Their structure has to be designed to accomplish a specific, simple task. They can turn things on or turn them off, they can destroy a molecule or create one. At most, they might allow an organic being to store electronic data. "Gray goo" is a theoretical scenario in which self-replicating nanites, able to break down molecules and rearrange them to form more of themselves, that are unstopable and consume everything which they come into contact with, until they consume an entire planet. Again, this is theoretical and no one is seeking to create it. Though, technically, that's performing multiple tasks, which hasn't proven to be within the range of nanite capability. Proteins are technically natural nanites. So look to them to find out how nanites can be made to behave. Proteins require a system of cells and RNA to be produced. There is no self-replicating protein. You could engineer a nanite to act as a virus (a type of protein) that attacks some specific process that leads to a cascade of events, but again, it wouldn't replicate. It would simply start its effects immediately and continue those effects until it breaks down. View my profile for a list of articles I have written, am writing, will write.
