What is the print size?
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

Apparently you get to choose your print size. It's the dropdown box next to the smaller image. It's in inches.

13 x 19 = $20
17 x 22 = $35
18 X 24 = $45

This has been around for a couple of years now.  At one point you could also get it printed on canvas and slightly larger than the 18x24 but it was like $300.  That option went away over a year ago.  Definitely on my wish list.

Seen the print in person.
Larry gave me the low down on how WoTC found the original and sent it to him (needed a slight touch-up).
Larry is a great guy to hang out with.
But of course, anyone named Larry is awesome. Smile

No No No, that was original blue box set. Wink  They ruined the look when they went to the pink sides when Night Hawks came out.

Uh, you're joking, right? (Wink or not, I can't tell.) The blue box set had an inked image. Similar, but not the same.

Google star frontiers box and do an image search.  The old blue box is shown there and it is the same image.  I never noticed it being of different quality than the pink box.  My gripe with the pink box is the pink and that it threw away most of the picture with the boring pink boarder taking up 2/3 of the space.  The blue box was a better style.  I never noticed the art being inked or lower quality.  I just loved the picture and spent hours staring at it.  I never owned the pink box.

Just looking at the picture again I think that the characters are on a moon of a gas giant.  The gas giant can be seen in the background.  The moon is big enough to have a breathable atmosphere as the humans do not have pressure suits or breathers on, so the jovian must be of a respectable size.

Oh, I forgot. The basic rules were the inked version. The Advanced rules were the fancy painting.

Doesn't the original cover art actually represent the crash of the lifeboat in the Volturnus adventure?

I had never thought of it that way.  Here is my analysis:

Pro Voltrunus:
  • Voltrunus has two moons, picture has two moons.
  • The ship is crashed and on fire like the module quickly does.
  • The crash is at night as per SF0.

Con Voltrunus:
  • Second moon looks to have yellow and red clouds.  That makes it too big.  What would make one moon yellow with red wavy bands?
  • The characters are a little well armed for the start of SF0.
  • The crash site is too rocky for the desert?

Thoughts everyone?

I never really thought about it either but it fits.  The crash was supposed to be on a rocky outcrop.  Beyond that, the extra gear and banded moon can just be chalked up to artistic licence.  As jedi said, don't overthink it.

Don't get me going on art, I'm still up set by the supposed art I witnessed in the lobby of a high rise condon in boston. To give you perspective this condo had an elevator you drove your car on to take it down to the parking garage. I have little doubt that a million doesn't buy you much in that building.

So with a view of just how much money is involved here let me say that the lobby art and the art in the second floor hall way leading to the club was the worst collection of crap; no calling it crap was an insult to the word crap. As far as I can guess is that someone on the condo board decided to buy the art of someone's kid who was attending art school and had to do their senior show. It would have been a way to throw a bone to a relative or friends kid on the condo association's dime.

If I was paying condo fees in that building, I'd be screeming at the next meeting of the condo association, that's for sure.

Just posted a question on Larry's site asking if the picture is of Voltrunus?  No need to over think it, just ask Larry Innocent.

I always wanted to beleive that was the lifeboat scene as well, but my big hang up is that the crashed vehicle looks much more like the air car chit than it does a lifeboat. You're certainly not going to cram 8 beings in that vehicle either.

I asked Larry about purchasing the original of this a few years ago at Gencon, but he said that it wasn't on sale yet and he wanted to restore it after getting some damage sitting in a WoTC storage room. At Gencon 2010, I asked him again, and he already sold it!... I missed my chance - did any of you manage to snag it?

I ended up getting a print and having it put in one of those nice Michael's frame. It's such an evocative picture and I have very fond memories of it.

And I always thought that it didn't look like Voltunus to me because it looks more like an aircar or something in the background, and not what I'd imagined an escape pod/lifeboat would look like. Plus, they are way too well armed vs. my PC's who landed with one one vibroknife between all 6 characters!

I think the crash is just following the instructions I could have sworn were in Alpha Dawn somewhere, stating that most issues of being on a planet should or would (I don't remember which) most often be as a result of a crash. Though, besides this there is a lot of information on crashes in Alpha Dawn as well as 3 references to crashed ships. One states: "recovering a rare medicine that was lost when a spaceship crashed on an alien planet." Then there is the mini-adventure that accompanies the Pan-Gal Security Breech adventure in which you have to locate survivors of a crash, and then there's the Crash on Volturnus module.

Since crashing is pretty much a common, if not pervasive theme within Star Frontiers, it is likely that they simply said to Elmore, we want you to paint a picture of a crashed ship, this aircar, on an alien world and toss in one of these guys, called Yazirians. The most common ways to show that it's a different world than earth is to show two moons or two suns, so there's a big chance it is merely coincidental. And in science fiction, rocky terrain is the most commonly depicted.

They gave Caldwell a description of the aliens on Starmist and he chose to paint an alien that was a bit different because, frankly, the description was pretty lame and confusing. So clearly the artists can take whatever license they please as long as it looks good. So it's not really worth burning your brain over.

Crashes were so common in AD because KH pilot skills were not invented at the time of publishing Embarassed
