I actually had seen this ad before when it came out. While the  picture is a little Norman Rockwellish in its potrayal of the kids playing the game, I don't agree with the comentator on this ad being harmful in PR for the game. I have seen a lot of D & D ads that were equally bad and few that were a lot worse. Its just an age appropriate add intendend to reach the 10-14 year old readers which was the same age group I was when I found Star Frontiers too. I think the Vrusk art is pretty awesomely detailed and its not too different from the comic book ad where the vrusk comes into the toy store and gives the kids the boxed set. It's not a great ad but its not a bad one either. I think the television ad was a lot worse then this one is, if you havent seen the SF tv ad, you can find it on you tube.

Seen this and the criticism, I think Az_Gamer's analysis is spot on
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

Remember the ad but really wonder where they put it. I saw it in Dragon magazine but does anyone know what other publications it appeared in.
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

That's a good question, if it was only published in Dragon much of the criticism looses its weight. Criticizing it now out of context is like condemning a really sexy ad that was that was only published in Playboy for being too sexy and leading to the corruption of Western Civilization. Some of the scans of those old ads would make me think that they were published in comic books.
