FirstCitizen November 15, 2011 - 8:25pm | I've been looking around for graphics available to use for a SF related site. I've not found anything yet. The project I am thinking about is creating a sites.google.com for an adventure module based on content from my online multiplayer game (in-development hobby) & past short story writing projects. Is there a zip or directory-listing somewhere of images that are available to use? Are there images available to use in the first place? Are there banner images to link back to this site (and some of the other popular SF sites)? Thanks for any pointers! |
jedion357 November 16, 2011 - 5:01am | Tough question, even with art sites like deviantart.com each artist posting there has different rules for using His/her art and some want to be paid no matter whether its for commercial use or not. There is always the issue of who owns the IP on the art you're using and you'll have to waste mental energy on that. Are you looking to recycle old SF art? Is this site just for your group? If its limited to your group and a noncommercial endeavor the I'd say just do what you gotta do but anything that is public and for public consumption then I'd urge caution in what you do. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |

There is a project to upload all SF images for use in our fan material. Basically if someone makes an image publicly available on the internet, you can use the image as long as you give credit, it's Fair Use. Note that some sites have public images and a Legal page on the site discussing their use. 99% of artist are honored you would use their publicly available images in fan material. |
FirstCitizen November 16, 2011 - 7:38pm | Thanks for the pointers. :) I don't know how I missed the "Original SF Art" project when I was clicking around. Basically what I am looking for is some general SF themed art (color or B&W) to use for a public site for a module I am working on. 'Eye candy' to sprinkle around and add graphic interest to the text/maps/etc for the module itself. Specific graphics, for example, something like the top left banner on this site 'SF join the revival' would be cool as links back to this site. Not looking to make any money off the SF-Module site. My gaming group lives under the same roof, so I am more looking at sharing it with a larger audience and getting outside comments on improving the modules (I had not been a game master for dice/paper RPG's for like 15+ years so I am really rusty and creating a finished "product"). Since I am leveraging races/ships/tech in some part from my 4x Empire Building game, linking the fiction/modules back to that site will just help with promotion/advertising for that larger project. It would be cool to get it into star frontiersman or produce a full blown PDF. But with a day job and already working on my web based 4x game I doubt I have the time/energy to complete that. So a nice looking free site is a good goal and motivates me to continue developing the module. :) |

Do you think it's publishable for SFman? |

There are tons of art options while clicking around, was not sure what was available to use. :) I think it probably could be publishable. After editing and playtesting (hah, and finishing writing everything up). That might be a long term goal though, having published a short story I know how much time editing is as a % of the total and I won't have time for that until Spring since I committed to getting the next alpha test done. I'll get some stuff started over next week (lots of time to playtest with the kids & write up the adventure) then post here about it along with some links. |
