"All you people look alike to me."

I was remembering that line from a movie said by a human of one color to another of a different color. And it struck me that in the Frontier that humans would have the same experience with dralasites and vrusk. Dralasites with their ability to smell pheromones would have no trouble recognizing individuals despite their black and white vision. Yazirians would have similar experience to humans though they might be better at recognizing Drals at least as they might have an edge with the ability to smell over humans. Vrusk should probably have the least trouble recognizing people due to a combination of their eye structure and the comprehension ability giving them the ability to spot small details.
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

Humma wont care if they recognize you. Ifshnits will likely be on a similar boat to humans. Osaka would love the myriad differences of the other races and perhaps be envious of them.

Don't discount the Vrusk sensitivity to pheromones (and other oders) via antennae ... or under-estimate the musk of rotten food that makes many well fed and unfamiliar Dral "all smell alike" ... or completely overlook the tendency of one group to fail to see past a set of divergent likeness, and miss the finer details of individual difference, even in the same species...

I am still of the mind that all the species have sub-culture and ethnic variety ... and equal 'ability' toward prejudice (tho perhaps via a variety of manifestations) even amongst "their own kind". Speciesism just adds another layer to racism (and while I am making nit-picky definition specifics, niether speciesism nor racism require 'prejudice' or 'intolerance' to exist... and are not 'morally-wrong' unto themselves... ) and can add 'justifications' to the intolerant mind.
Oh humans!! Innocent We discover a galactic community filled with multiple species of aliens, and the first thing we think about is "how can we have sex with them?".

Would it be considered racist to refer to a dral as 'Bud'? Sort of like referring to African-American males as 'Boy'? just an errant thought.

as a dral i would not be offended.  i would find it funny that a human word meant young sprout, friend, and recreational drink all at the same time.

ot: wish i could enter capital letters when using this site with a blackberry.  shifting to capitals makes me loose focus to the text window.  glad this is a work phone that i didn't pay for.  personally i think i'd buy an evo.

I suppose it could be used in a similar manner, as a term-of-endearment or belittling-slander.

That is a large part of what I get from the consideration of "All you people look alike..." in a multi-xeno environment... terms and connotations that have meaning to one biological-norm, have no meaning of comparison to translate to properly in another.
The multi-xeno environment amplifies the multi-cultural divergences many fold... or... obscures it completely in the sheer alienness, irreverent of the intent or context.

A few of the countless derogates usable across the frontier...
Human (translations approximated) - Aimless Skinny, Back-blind, Bald-born, Chitin-less Child, Dead-stick, Dirt-ling, Dung-ling, Fore-eyes, Half-bods, Hang-nail, Hungry Homeless Thing, Jack-trader, Jack-of-All-Know-its, Junk Jumping Jack-men, Junk-man, Junk-trader, Lost Loafer, Mane-less Meander, Whoopsie, Skinny Wanderer, Stick-limb, Star-jumper, Stiffs, Uninvited Usurper, Zany Thought
Note: the poetics of these terms all tend to loose something in translation.

Ethnic variations and subtle divergences of all the sub-races of each main species creates a considerable cultural catalog of possible words, terms, and phrases each species would gather from all the others. A full list would be mind-boggling.
In response to this immense collection of possible derogates, and the lack of proper translation being possible for the vast majority of the combined slang lexicon, a simpler term has developed.
inud [ai nutorig. PGLA term (Pan Galactic Linguistics Association - Acronym); Insert Next Untranslatable Derogative. "Back off inud, I do not have time for your xeno-conged antics."
