jedion357 August 6, 2011 - 5:15pm | After Gencon and Larry and I have discussed a change in proceedures that may save significant time in putting an issue together. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Shadow Shack August 7, 2011 - 2:57am | I haven't had time to glean the more recent issues (re: anything from the past year)...did my "Liberation of Volturnus" KH boardgame (Eorna & Mechanon fighters vs escaping Sathar troop transports/shuttles) ever get printed? |
AZ_GAMER August 7, 2011 - 4:23am | thats great. and.... the release date is...... |
w00t (not verified) August 9, 2011 - 1:39pm | I'm changing up the format to make it more tablet friendly (right now its takes a while to redraw each page). No publication date. Jedion and I hope to have an issue out this month. issueON, jediON, oh ya, I love it when a plan comes together. |
jedion357 August 13, 2011 - 1:45pm | 25 hours and counting spent working on issue 17 this week! Hey, just how much am I getting paid for this w00t? I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
AZ_GAMER August 13, 2011 - 2:57pm | Thanks Jedion. We are all eagerly awaiting the Zine and really appreciate your effort. I would becareful in asking w00t for payment though, He has his own currency the w00 cred, and well... um, errrrr, let's just say it has a better rating with Standard & Poors than the dollar does. |
jedion357 August 13, 2011 - 5:33pm | Its going to be pretty big. But what I'm really excited about is something special coming on the horizon. Snorts and chuckles in his dralasite way knowing that he has inside information that few are privy to. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
w00t (not verified) August 15, 2011 - 7:45am | I spent .25 hours. Who's really in charge, human? I'm curious, AZ and whoever reads this post; what is the attraction to the webzine? Why do you look forward to a new issue? Do we overpopulate with GM articles and perhaps should start placing Player-orientated articles? w00t minds wants to know. Rollo August 15, 2011 - 9:43am | Woot, I look forward to it for a number of reasons - I rather like the comedy in the classifieds for example. But I think the primary reason I like it is that I am not able to play table top RPGs that much anymore because no one I know in my area plays them. So I get to play for a couple of months each summer and that's about it. This webzine allows me to keep busy with this particular RPG so it doesn't slowly fade if you understand what I'm saying? Part of that is also the opportunity to interact with other people in an indirect sort of way (through their writtings and ideas) and that helps me refine my own ideas for future scenarios and whatnot. As far as overpopulating with GM articles, I guess I don't see that. The information is good no matter what the source or intended target audience if you ask me. As proof of my last statement, last month I spent RPing with my old college buddies and I ran a SF scenario. I had previously printed off all the SFMan webzines and took them with me. They got nothing but rave reviews from the 10 guys that showed up this year and every 'zine was pawed through relentlessly. The new equipment for example (well, new to these guys because they had no idea till last month that this stuff was out there at all) really got them amped and there were relentless calls for this new item or that new item, etc. I'm glad I had previously thought to save all the digital files to a flash drive that I took with me because I ended up passing it around and letting most of the guys save them on their laptops. We had previously alloted blocks of time to play a few other RPGs and older board games (like Talisman and Titan) but we ended up playing nothing but Star Frontiers for the entire reunion instead. So as you can see (at least from this anticodtyl evidence) the webzine seems to be pretty good the way it is to a group of older RPers who hadn't played SF in some 20 years. I don't have to outrun that nasty beast my friend...I just have to outrun you! |
jedion357 August 15, 2011 - 10:53am | I think there are quite a few of us that don't get to play much and would like to. So the question might be what can be done to facilitate play? More locations, encounters, actual adventures, deck plans, etc. I think there is a trend for some of us with kids to introduce them to the game. This is good as new fans help a hobby grow. So should the zine support efforts for parents to play the game with there kids? Adventures and encounters written specifically for kids. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
w00t (not verified) August 15, 2011 - 11:12am | @Rollo, that is exciting news. I know ppl enjoy the webzine (just see the guest posts on the sfman site) but it's good to hear your story. :-) I might use it in a write-up. jedion, just a thought, what if we complied the Star Frontiers Test Drive rules and a few one page adventures? Much like the Savage Worlds Test Drives rules, it's everything you need to sit down for 2 hours a play. IMO, ppl could print the SF Test Drive rules with a few adventures and hit any con or table running! |

IMO, ppl could print the SF Test Drive rules with a few adventures and hit any con or table running! sounds like a project for issue 19 IMO, but worth a thought, would it include pre gen characters? actually pre gens might be required to sit down and go. jedion357 August 15, 2011 - 11:53am | I think I may need to create a file on my computer for all the artwork we have permission to use, separated by folders and artwork I'm seeking permission to use. there is just too much of it spread out over too many places to effectively keep track of it. [sigh] another project I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Rollo August 15, 2011 - 12:39pm | For me, facilitation of play isn't so much in the material as it is in the availability of others willing to sit down and play with me. Sad, but true. *bleh* But, knowing that my situation isn't the only situation out there... I think that people might well benefit from such things as a generatic creature file. Something that has pre-generated creatures that aren't specifically asigned to a certain planet so that a GM could quickly refere to it, take 5 or 6 out of it and populate a planet with them in order to jump right into an off-the-cuff scenario with kids or a regular group even. For me, I never really used pre-generated scenarios that much. I took bits and pieces that I liked and built a scenario around them, but usually didn't follow the module all that closely. I have a rather haphazard style I guess...but it always worked well for me. Thus, having a file of pre-generated critters I could choose from to build a new world in a fraction of the time would be quite helpful. I'd just note where I put those critters and not use them anywhere else thereafter. Similarly, detail (or lack thereof) can bring an otherwise great scenario down. Too much detail is one thing - getting bogged down in it for example. But usually scenarios flounder due to too little detail. As we know, people get busy with real life and detail can take a lot of time to flesh out. So pre-generated places (deck plans would certainly fall into this category) - like Port Loren for example would be a boon to an otherwise busy GM. Not a scenario mind you, but city maps with shops listed and stuff like that. Those little details are hard to come up with sometimes, but really add alot to the overall RP experience. In my previous post I shared my recent experience at my college reunion. Of course that lasted only a few days. I mentioned 'couple of months' in that post because during that time I pick up my son and bring him back to where I live to visit for the summer each year. I have recently exposed him to table top and he has decided that it's the best thing since sliced bread. So among the systems that I have taught him is SF. So to bring this around to my point...yeah, I think that adding some kid-friendly content sure couldn't hurt. My kid has certainly taken to table top recently! I don't have to outrun that nasty beast my friend...I just have to outrun you! |
Gargoyle2k7 August 15, 2011 - 4:21pm | I look forward to each issue of SFman to see new input. New gear, new creatures, new races, additional information on the core four, the planets and star systems, all of it. Anything that adds to the SF universe, whether for GMs, players or both is a potential boon. As always, for my own games, I take what I want, modify or chuck the rest. As to articles or features to facilitate play, for me that's mostly a matter of finding players, though adventures or adventures ideas/seeds could be useful. The ads are always fun, too. :) The only thing I've just plain not liked is fiction; I don't want to read a story in the middle of my game info. Long live the Frontier! |
AZ_GAMER August 15, 2011 - 4:33pm | Because its A..W..E..S..O..M..E ++++ |
w00t (not verified) August 15, 2011 - 9:20pm | Sample page layout with authors Victor Gil de Rubio and Cedric Einarsson. I love the image I found by the stunning work of Yves J. Malgorn! |
w00t (not verified) August 15, 2011 - 9:29pm | Hey all, we need some frontier jokes for the webzine. Two yazirians priests walk into the bar, one says to the other, "I heard you have to write every sin you ever done on a holoboard as you climb the ladder to heaven." The other replies, "In that case I'm bringing the new Pan-Gal Auto-correcting Holo Pen (R)." He smiles, turns to the camera and winks, "Never worry about the wrongs you've done, auto-correction is the way to that new beginning in the clouds of Yast'eaven." [This add broght to you by Pan-Gal, "We care for you here and there."] ok.. that was really lame but ya get the point. |
w00t (not verified) August 18, 2011 - 7:54am | SFMAN is in print. But you know that by now. Know what I wants for me birth day? Buy me copies of SFMAN and Digitally Remastered. :-) I thinking about dropping $200 and ordering the whole bundle just to sit them out on the DwD Studios prodcut table.... impressive. Most impressive. |

Ascent September 28, 2011 - 9:59pm | Let's just let it go for 3 more months and call it an "Annual". Though I have a feeling it will end up being a belated annual. jedion357 September 29, 2011 - 6:01am | Let's just let it go for 3 more months and call it an "Annual". Though I have a feeling it will end up being a belated annual. Patients grasshoppoer. Actually I just got copies of the zine in 5 PDFs for review. I think You'll be very pleased with it. I'm very excited about the content- first instalment of material from the Zebulon's Guide Expande project; an new optional rule for crew casualties in KHs loaded with some nice art, and adventure treatment involving the burning lands on Volturnus and for the first time a rule mechanic for raidiation poisoning, plus new equipment. The minute the issue is out I have to go back and post links to the zine in the accounts of the deviant artist who allowed us to use their work and thank profusely (hopefully creating a long standing relationship between some of them and the zine). BTW- thank you to all the artist that did contribute; there are several of you who are part of the community and its nice to not have to do a lot of sucking up to you to get art but I feel that a Thank You is well deserved to you too. w00t (not verified) September 29, 2011 - 8:36am | Perhaps we should remove the Date/Month and just have Issue#. Expectations and reality are not merging very well. |
Arclight September 29, 2011 - 1:58pm | Expectations and reality are not merging very well. I was thinking the same thing - seeing how 16 came out 12/10, its been, what, almost 10 months work-up on 17. Not that I'm timekeeping, mind you... Ascent September 30, 2011 - 6:15pm | Expectations and reality are not merging very well. Actually, I already knew it was released in December. The month on the magazine only makes sure we're accurate. You wouldn't want us calling it a year when it's only been 10 months, would you? Knowing the date can save a meaningless argument from happening. View my profile for a list of articles I have written, am writing, will write. "It's yo' mama!" —Wicket W. Warrick, Star Wars Ep. iggy September 30, 2011 - 7:21pm | I am not too concerned about the issues being variously spaced out in time. But I really do like the dates on them. The purist side of me wants to be able to site articles from SFman by issue, month, year. -iggy |
Imperial Lord September 30, 2011 - 7:39pm | Larry knows my feelings on this, so I will not pontificate... |
w00t (not verified) October 5, 2011 - 8:19pm | 17 is hot off the email to the press! We'll, it's in Bill capable hands (my computer is unable to render the full PDF with proper margins). Special thanks to.... uhm I'll forget someone but you know who you are. THANKS!This issue is 88 pages and will be the standard moving forward with one exception; the 30th Anniversary Issue! Hey, I can break a rule now and then! :-) I'll be crafting a Newsletter, if you have something to be added please drop me a line. |
