Archaeological Mysteries & Adventures

I'm a terrible sucker for PBS documentaries about archeology; Secrets of the Dead, Nova, etc. Just re-watched a couple that brought out conclusive evidence to show that the Spanish versions of how the Aztec and Incan empires were conquered is a bit of history being written by the victors and seriously downplayed the roles of the natives that helped them. It got me thinking about archaeological mysteries in the frontier as an adventure. Naturally you need an official version of history and then you need the truth. There has to be a reason that the truth os covered up. Two approaches can be taken: one is find a significant event in history and write in a back story or two write up an event that is not necessarily a pivotal historical event. The second approach is probably simplest as you don't have to worry about time line issues.
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

A unique feature of this idea is that the Frontier is fairly young and the principles involved in the event could be still alive and they could very well play a role in hindering or helping the PCs. Ideas that could be used: Free World rebellion and a war crime /massacre of vrusk and the mass grave was just uncovered. The 1SW and an e event involving an incident during Pale's occupation by the sathar. An ever in Laco's war that OFC doesn't want common knowledge

I guess the concept can also be used long-term in a campaign where the PCs completed their involvement in an adventure some time previously, only to find out that the "official story" being told is quite different. They must get the truth out and I'm sure someone powerful will be trying to stop them.

Perhaps events in the Volturnus campaign and a government cover up? For that campaign I had planned that an annoying npc survivor of the Serena Dawn crew would write a novel magnifying himself and down playing the PCs. Two yazirians in the party were going to be merged into one character under the heading of creative license- something designed to offend a traditional yazirian.

OP - interesting idea.  I was always intrigued by the various artifacts on Volturnus and the potential adventure hooks they offered.

a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Inner Reach underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. Smile

Funny thing is I've been wanting to run an A-Team/007/True Lies type adventure for a long time.  I think the SF universe is perfect for that genre.
